Review

With age-appropriatehumor and insight, veteran teacher Reynolds offers advice aimed at assistingyoung people as they trek through the minefield that is middle school.Honest intone but with an acute sense of the ridiculous (the trope ofgarlic-bread-stealing space gnomes is overused), the short chapters containstories from the author's own middle school experience or his imagination, anarrative approach that will appeal to fans of books such as Diary of a WimpyKid. Short chapters on bullying, peer pressure, grades, dealing with parentsand teachers, and more are sprinkled with accessible and pertinent quotes andend with exercises to try. The topic of sex is excluded, gearing the book toyounger readers—especially those who enjoy scatological goofiness. Reynoldstakes on the media, imagining a fictitious Mr. Buttmuncher at its head, toencourage kids to think for themselves. While playful black-and-white cartoonillustrations and doodles add to the zaniness, the messages are worthy andclear: be yourself; practice empathy; work hard; hug your parents. A list ofrecommended books and movies is appended. For those approaching or in the scrumof middle school, a positive reminder that the perfect middle school experiencedoes not exist. (Nonfiction. 10-14) (Kirkus Reviews 4/15/16)Adopting a jokey but understanding tone, Reynolds uses his own past experiences and those of the students he currently teaches to commiserate with readers who are dealing with insecurity, the pressure to conform, grade stresses, and other difficulties; throughout, he urges them to maintain their individuality and accept that there will be good days and bad. While some of Reynolds’s metaphors can be goofy to the point of nonsensical (he compares negative external pressures to “space gnomes who are only after one thing: garlic bread,” and hard-to-scrub-away “caked dirt” represents inner determination), his compassion for those in the trenches is never in question, and readers in need will find plenty of encouragement in these pages. Ages 10–14. (Publishers Weekly June 6, 2016)Middle School was a nightmare for Luke Reynolds. He recounts the experience at the beginning of this book. Eventually, he decided to go back and face his demonic Middle School memories, this time with ammunition. He had become a teacher. So he went back to Middle School and worked to apply what he had learned to make Middle School a little bit easier for his students. He told them to believe in themselves and to stop trying to look like a poster in the mall. He told them to ask crazy questions and remember that they’re teachers were human. He told them to risk being themselves. Now he’s sharing the insight that he gained from all of it in this book, written—not about—but to Middle Schoolers. He explains about refrigerated brains and the lies of love, and asks them to hug their parents. His words are humorous, compassionate, and dense with authentic wisdom (comparison is an elite secret weapon of the space gnomes). He laces his guidance with dynamic spot illustrations, his exceptional love of garlic bread, and quotes from the likes of Teddy Roosevelt, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Ernest Hemingway, Helen Keller, Pablo Picasso, Arthur Ashe, and Eleanor Roosevelt. Each lesson begins with a narrative about one of his students as an example of  the problem he’s discussing and ends with a simple yet effective exercise to get the reader in touch with the solutions he is suggesting. When you point it out to customers, suggest that instead of reading it themselves, they let their child read it and tell them what it says. (Retailing Insight)Reynolds uses humor and oddball metaphors to make the advice he delivers to new, beleaguered, or confused middle-schoolers palatable. The point of school, he explains to his young audience, “is to learn how to use your voice to share your ideas, to solve problems, and to work with other[s].” One’s inner joy and potential for personal growth he sees as a loaf of yummy garlic bread, which is continually under threat from an army of voracious “space gnomes” (i.e., “bullies, grades, competitions, insecurity, and fear”). Everyone also has dense stores of empathy and determination to draw on when challenges arise. As a middle-school teacher, he offers plenty of classroom anecdotes, but his focus is on broadly encouraging self-knowledge and self-confidence, rather than tackling specific issues or scenarios. Typical of such guides, though, he does include lists, writing exercises, and inspirational quotes as well as selected films, websites, and novels. Silly stock cartoons further lighten the already positive message and overall tone. — John Peters (Booklist June 1, 2016)

I wish I'd had this book when I was entering middle school... or high school, or college, or my 20s and 30s. There are a lot of valuable life lessons crammed into this little volume, and you can call me a slow learner, but I didn't figure most of this stuff out until I was well into adulthood. Even though it's filled with excellent advice, it's also got humor, relatable anecdotes, and interesting exercises, so it doesn't come off as dry or preachy. I bought the Kindle version to read for myself, then a paperback for my kids, and finally a hardcover to donate to their school. This book should be required reading for tweens everywhere (and their teachers and parents!), and it would make an excellent gift, too!

My son needed to read a non-fiction book over the summer, so I happened to stumble upon this book. He just entered middle school and really enjoyed this book. The book made him laugh and helped to make him feel comfortable on the first day of middle school.

With interesting ideas on thinking about this and drawings to go along with them plus steps on having the best middle school life, this book is is AMAZING!! It has great humor and wonderful ways of looking at things, so its perfect for me, a person who likes humorous books and interesting ideas. I loved this book! Beginning to end this book had me hooked, plus it wasn't very long at all. Pretty quick read, actually! A must read for anyone. Perfect, absolutely perfect.

My daughter loved this book. She read it when she entered Middle School.

My youngest son just started middle school. He loves this book

My son enjoyed this book.

My 12 year old daughter didn't care for the book.

Great Book

Feeding baby offers simple approaches for raising a healthy baby and creating a lifetime of adventurous eating. It is the ultimate parenting resource for preparing wholesome foods with over 80 recipes designed to build powerful brains, dense bones, tough immune systems and strong muscles. Feeding Baby is more than a cookbook. It is a trusted guide to help parents encourage their baby to self-regulate food intake and self-feed according to hunger feelings and developmental skills. Feeding Baby also promotes the use of a sensory rich diet to teach flavor preference by adding a variety of textures, colorful produce, fresh herbs, and mild spices to baby food. Parents take comfort in the advice offered to minimize picky eating habits and prevent childhood obesity. --Rachelle Rosencrance (Amazon Verified Review)This book takes me back to my childhood when my mother practically prepared all of our food from the huge vegetable garden we had every year. All dishes were made from fresh fruits and vegetables when in season or from canned or frozen products prepared directly from the garden. As kids we all pitched in to help "Mama" prepare the meals, which contributed to our close family relationship. All four of us grew up healthy. Feeding Baby is not only very well written, but offers a wealth of knowledge regarding the nutrition that goes into every recipe. The dishes are delightful, the book promotes healthy living, family unity and it is just a fun book. I have given six books a gifts and everyone loves them. --William Cash (Amazon Verified Review)This book is the one dietitians have wanted to give to all mothers! Ok, I really like this book for the recipes. However, you might not want to go here if you are someone who super easily suffers from mom guilt, because this book will probably give you a lot of anxiety. It is pretty heavy handed on its recommendations for your baby to eat organic produce, pastured meats, etc. and when I first read it I just about had a panic attack thinking I was going to be a bad mom if I ever fed my baby something from a jar or (gasp!) conventional produce. After a while I came to my senses and realized that it was going to be okay to find a happy medium. I try to make most of my baby's food and use mostly organic products, and once I just accepted that as good enough, I really enjoyed this book. I love the philosophies it contains regarding how to raise a child with a healthy attitude towards food, and its encouragement to keep trying with different foods even if your baby does not initially like them. I have made many of the recipes in the book and my baby likes most of them a lot!

Every mom out there, PLEASE read this book so I can have friends over without having to prepare 5 different things for their kids!

Lots of yummy looking recipes. I even want to try some of them myself. So far baby has been a great eater and I think he will like some of these combinations.

Am I biased because Clancy is family? Yes, but the book is fantastic and has lead to many compliments from family, friends, and strangers regarding our daughter's diverse and healthy diet. In addition, the family aspect helped my wife and me got an early copy of the Feeding Baby manuscript at the beginning of 2014 when our then 6 month old was beginning to try solid foods. These recipes gave us a large jump start on developing a healthy diet for our daughter and we have been using the recipes consistently for 6+ months with tremendous results. First, my daughter has likely now tried and enjoyed many more foods and food combinations than I have ever tried in my lifetime - who knew that basil and banana is a winner, or applesauce and anchovies. Second, with the help of the recipes, our daughter has enjoyed a tremendous array of fruits, vegetables, seafood, and meats as well as tasted numerous spices and flavors that would not have entered her diet otherwise. Third, the recipes are relatively quick and easy and allow for the parent to make batches of food to reheat at later dates for their child or take the food on the road with you, to restaurants, or to friends to ensure your child has healthy items at every meal. Finally, Clancy is donating proceeds to the Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson's Research - an issue near and dear to our family.

I found this book to be very helpful as a new mom. The advice is practical. The author brought peace of mind when it came to feeding my baby. She approaches the entire eating process by creating a positive emotional and physical feeding environment. I love the idea of adding fresh herbs to baby food (homemade or commercial) to help expand my daughter's palate. I highly recommend this book to any mother (experienced or new).

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!This is the BEST baby cookbook I have ever seen. The recipes are amazing and the author's take on children's nutrition is both down to earth and inspirational- which is the perfect match for a busy mom. I got the book a couple of days ago and i haven't been able to put it down. As you read "Feeding Baby" it is completely obvious how much work and thought went into it. This book wasn't just slapped together to make a quick buck- it is a masterpiece- the author's passion comes through on every page. This would make a perfect gift for a new mom and even if you have been through the baby feeding thing before like I have- i feel this book can really help guide your hand the second or third time around- it's influence can only be positive really- enjoy enjoy enjoy!

Volume 1 of this four volume set provides 23 stories for reading practice. The book cover describes this volume 1 as advanced-beginner. Each story is one page long with one page in simplified Chinese and one page using the traditional characters. Don't expect too many pages of actual reading practice as there are only 23 of them. There is also a section for vocabulary words and questions about the story. There are also about 50 pages where the stories are repeated with the characters and pinyin. These pages are probably not useful for very many people since the western learner should avoid pinyin in reading as much as possible. One strong point of this book is that these stories are deeply rooted in Chinese culture and those raised in mainland China are very familiar with these stories so there is a cultural learning aspect to this book. Overall this book contains some good reading practice and I look forward to reading volume 2.

Many modern Chinese textbooks focus on day-to-day situations (like ordering food at a restaurant or mailing a letter at the post office) and don't spend much (if any) time on introducing the stories behind the four-character phrases that are frequently used in written Chinese. This is problematic as a student moves into intermediate-level reading material because these phrases will start to appear more and more frequentlyThis first volume of the series says it's for "Advanced Beginning Students," but there's actually quite a bit of vocabulary that's not usually found in beginner-level textbooks, so an advanced beginner student would have to make fairly heavy use of a dictionary while reading these stories (in addition to the book's supplied vocab lists). That being said, the grammar seems to be at an advanced beginner level. Overall, the book might be better suited for low-intermediate students looking for reading material that is interesting but not overly challenging. The book conveniently gives each story in both traditional and simplified characters and also supplies a few discussion questions. The back section of the book has each story written out with pinyin above ever character. Thus, a teacher could use this book with low-beginner students for basic pronunciation practice even if the students don't know the actual meaning of most of the characters.

I have been studying virtually on my own for four years or so. From time to time I get discouraged with learning Mandarin particularly at my advanced age. I had hit a real tough point a few weeks ago and read online a student who shared same and had broken out of the "Slump" by beginning to read more. So, I bought the book. I am DELIGHTED with this product. First Cheng Tsui is dependable and produces a good product. This is particularly good as it teaches Chinese idioms and stories used in the HSK exams. So, a student getting through the four volumes would ace the HSK's for sure. The stories are interesting and there are just enough new words to not overwhelm (one of the challenges of studying the usual Mandarin text books of varying authors, I am using Integrated Chinese Level 2 book 1 now and some lessons have 50 new words, when you might have just learned 45 new words and 90 new characters on the LAST lesson. So, it becomes overwhelming, a bit). This book is good! A great addition and I am now on Lesson 3 and have learned a LOT already.

This has proved to be just difficult enough for me working on my own to supplement my Chinese classes. The arrangement of the book is especially good since I can't cheat and refer to English vocabulary on the same page, but need to make a special effort to look things up. New vocabulary is conveniently close to the story, but words I should know require some effort. The translations of the stories at the end of the book are general, which I think is also good. The stories themselves are often wry, and offer a very interesting glimpse of Chinese culture.

I ordered this book to supplement my private Chinese lessons and when I showed my Taiwanese teacher, she was very impressed. Not only because the stories are so well rooted in Chinese culture, but because the tales are told both in simplified and traditions characters. That was a plus for me because she teaches both and I enjoy learning both. (Taiwan uses traditional and mainland China only uses simplified.) She also told me something interesting in that the Chinese "titles" of each tale are specific idioms in Chinese that signify the moral of the story and are used in everyday language to express that moral. Kinda interesting!

I've only just started going through the book, but I can already tell it's great! I feel like I am reading interesting texts (as opposed to plowing through kids books) but I also am not looking up charachters every few seconds (well I sorta am, but they're on the next page, which also means they're easy to go back and review). I've only taken one semester of Chinese so far and this is a little challenging, but mostly for vocab reasons and not grammar. Definitly reccomend it, and I'm looking forward to advancing into the later books.

These are nice, short fables familiar to every Chinese person - the Eastern version of Aesop. Each story appears in traditional and simplified characters, with and without pinyin, and in English, giving the reader a wide range of options for study in just one text. Also included are comprehension questions and discussion questions for expansion of the topic. Thank goodness there is more than one volume!
