The story line and personal aspects of this remarkable man are so expertly detailed that the reader will not only marvel at this rare glimpse into an author's mind and life but also the times in which he lived and wrote. On one hand is the depth and integrity Clemens displays and on the other is realizing this took place nearly a century and a quarter ago. To restore his honor, Clemens embarks on a journey not only at an age that even present day is reserved for retirement, but at a time when travel, accommodations, society and communications were far inferior in ease and safety to our present day world. The trek alone is enough to warrant praise, but the character that is revealed in this epic undertaking not only commands respect and awe, but also bespeaks the humanness and humility of an artist truly moved by his surroundings, his family and even his own views of himself. The book is well researched, balanced and insightful to the the Samuel Langhorn Clemens behind Mark Twain's ability to connect with others through his writing, words, life and deeds.

I rarely write reviews for products purchased from Amazon, however, this book compels me to do so. Mr. Zacks presents us Twain at the height of his genius and celebrity but with character flaws, some of which lead to a mountain of debt that forces him to consider the shame of bankruptcy. Instead, the aging Twain strikes out to circle the globe as a stage performer in order to pay back his creditors and restore his honor. He is bucked up (if not forced to make the right decisions) along his journey by his wife, daughter, and a close friend -- a tycoon with Standard Oil! Mr. Zacks takes us through exotic locales (Ceylon and Tasmania to name but two), bizarre and hilarious situations, minor triumphs, heartbreaking tragedy, slap-your-thigh aphorisms, and ultimately redemption for Twain. Mr. Zacks gives us a simply delightful book; well-researched, well written, and highly entertaining. I e-mailed him to thank him.

The Panic of 1893 began with European banks worrying about a coup and wheat crop failure in Argentina. Within a very short period of time, the panic had spread to the United States, and a severe depression began. Stock prices collapsed, more than 500 U.S. banks closed, farms were abandoned, and more than 15,000 businesses failed. The effects didn’t occur overnight, but they happened fairly rapidly. One of the businesses that eventually failed was the Charles Webster publishing firm. It was owned by Mark Twain. Twain desperately sought to keep the business afloat, while at the same time investing heavily in a linotype machine that would have brought a fortune had it worked. It didn’t. Twain and his family lost nearly everything and he was left heavily in debt, a debt his wife insisted that he pay.As popular historian recounts in6” Chasing the Last Laugh: Mark Twain’s Raucous and Redemptive Round-the-World Comedy Tour,” Twain did the only thing he knew to do, the thing he had come to intensely dislike. He went on the lecture circuit. In fact, he went on the global lecture circuit. The itinerary took Twain, his wife Livy, and their daughter Clara (two other daughters stayed in New York) first across the northern United States to Seattle, and by boat to the Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), India, South Africa, and then England. The trip took close to a full year: Twain spoke hundreds of times, occasionally to half-filled auditoriums but more often to houses so packed that extra engagements had to be scheduled. The tour was a moneymaking event, to be sure, but it became something of a triumph for Twain the writer and speaker and Twain the man.The tour has always been covered in other biographies, but not to the detail Zacks includes. And the story is in both the overview and the details – the overlay of late 19th century imperialism, the British Raj in India reaching its apogee, the stark realities of race in South Africa, the responses of the audiences, the specific stories Twain told at each of the performances, how the newspapers covered him and his stories, what played well, and what didn’t.This could get tedious, but in Zacks’ hands it becomes rich and illuminating. He tells a wonderful story, pulling from the correspondence of Twain, the family, friends and relatives, and robber baron H.H. Rogers, who did more than anyone else (including Twain) to extricate the author from his legal and financial ordeals.Zacks is the author of a number popular histories, including “History Laid Bare” (1995); “An Underground Education” (1999); “The Pirate Hunter” (2003); “The Pirate Coast” (2006); and “Island of Vice” (2012). He’s also been a freelance journalist, writing for such publications as The Atlantic and ESPN.“Chasing the Last Laugh” is a fascinating account of a major American author who stared financial (and social) ruin in the face, and ultimately didn’t blink. And managed to entertain a lot of people along the way.

Richard Zacks puts you right on the ship, right on the train with Mark Twain and his family on their trip around the world. The most amazing travel moment was the descent in a hand car from the Himalayas to the plains of India! The descriptions of the talks he gave, the stories he told were hugely entertaining. Great research and story telling!

An excellent book about someone world famous in the early 1900's. Plenty of history about this era as well as insight into this historical figure. Even though Twain was a very accomplished speaker, writer and humorous, the book does not cover over his faults, of which he had many. All are explored and presented in a way that keeps the reader interested until the end.

A very interesting look at a difficult period for our most celebrated author. He isn't deified, but shown as a man with great compassion for other people, regardless of his own mistakes and missteps...the descriptions of his lectures are wonderful and entertaining and the book is an insightful picture of both his life and the world at the end of the 19th century...

I always thought that Twains book "Following the Equator" just didn't have the edge that his other travel books, "Innocents Abroad", and the "Tramp" series had. Now I know why. This book is a terrific account of how he saved himself and his family from ruin. A permanent addition to my Twain shelf.

Anyone who likes to travel will love reading this book, if only to compare what has changed and what has stayed the same! Of course, Mark Twain is hilarious. There are tears, guilt, and amazing friends, as well.
