From the Author

Q: What inspired you to tell this story?            A: In the past few years , the trafficking of children has gotten a good deal of media attention. But more than five years ago, when I had a chance meeting with a photographer who was working undercover to document the presence of young girls in brothels overseas, I knew immediately that I wanted to do what no one else had done so far: tell this heartbreaking story from the point of view of one individual girl.             I believe that young adults want to know what's happening to their peers on the other side of the world, but that media accounts, by their very nature, cannot usually go beyond the surface. To me, there is nothing more powerful- or permanent- than the impact of a book.  Q: What did your travel to India and Nepal bring to your story?  A: I spent a month in India and Nepal tracing Lakshmi's steps- going from a poor, isolated village in the foothills of the Himalayas all the way to the teeming red-light district of Calcutta. Trained as an investigative reporter, I took notes and photos observing the sights, smells, foods, sounds, and the customs- details to give the book authenticity. I also interviewed women in the red-light district, girls who had been rescued, and a man who had sold his girlfriend in exchange for a motorcycle. It helped that I was a foreigner in the busy streets of Kathmandu and Calcutta, because I was as bewildered and awestruck by these places as Lakshmi is in the novel.  Q: What were the challenges of bringing Lakshmi's story to life?  A: Perhaps the biggest challenge was not to let the sadness of the situation overwhelm me. When I first came home from India, I fell into a despair unlike anything I'd ever felt before- something I now understand was a delayed reaction to the suffering I'd witnessed. Moreover, I felt inadequate to the task of doing justice to the stories the women had entrusted to me. But when I thought about the young girls who might be recruited to take their places as the women became ill or died, what I felt was urgency- urgency that their experiences be known and understood by the outside world. And I began to write.  It was also a challenge to keep the book from being too grim, and to keep Lakshmi's humanity alive in a believable way. It was important to remember that, in even the grimmest of situations, there is kindness as well as cruelty, terror as well as boredom, and even, surprising as it may seem, humor.  Q: Why did you decide to tell the story in a series of vignettes?  A: I started writing the book in small scenes because, initially, it was too     daunting to imagine that I could tell Lakshmi's entire story. Once I had a handful of these scenes, the book began to take shape. Eventually, vignettes seemed to be the right way to tell a story that is inherently so fractured- if not shattering. I also think the "white space" between vignettes calls on the reader to engage his or her imagination in the story-telling process to fill in the blanks.            Q: How can we help?  A: Educate yourself by visiting the Web sites for Maiti Nepal and Aapne Aap, then work to raise awareness among your friends and family members, your church or school. Write an essay for your school paper or a letter to your local paper or your congressman. Organize a student group at your school, then show a film about trafficking, invite a speaker, and raise or donate money. The cost of living in countries where trafficking takes place is very low; one week's allowance, for instance, could go a long way toward providing medicine, toys or books for the children of the red-light district, or could contribute to the work of organizations that stop trafficking and provide safety for victims.  As Eli Weisel said, "Let us remember: what hurts the victim most is not the cruelty of the oppressor, but the silence of the bystander."

Sold, by Patricia McCormick, is about a young girl that faces the horrors of human trafficking. Lakshmi, a 13-14 year old girl from Nepal is sold by her step-father to go live in a brothel. I know situations like this happen all around the world and this is sickening. What kind of parent would sell their young daughter for sex just for some money? On top of being sold for sex, this young girl had no idea what was going on in the beginning. Lakshmi’s actions show the worries these young girls go through in these situations and how they all just want to be freed. Many girls are forced to stay in these unhealthy and dirty living environments until they are too sick to function. Before I read this book, I had no idea what human trafficking is. Who knew young girls could be sold for sex, especially without any say. The women in this brothel are brave and hopefully, like Lakshmi they all find freedom in some way. I know that this book is based on the lives of many girls and not just one, but I wonder what individuals in these situations actually go through, and how likely are they to be save. I believe that this book should be recommended to all young adults. It is very informational about the struggles people around the world face, and many of us Americans are blind to these situations.

I use this novel in my curriculum every year, and my students absolutely love it. Patricia McCormick is able to paint a beautifully descriptive picture of what life is like in both Nepal and in the brothels of India. She inspires my students to learn about other cultures, and about issues that exist around the world. Her novel also inspires my students to write. As part of the course, my students experiment with writing several vignettes of their own, and many of them want to be writers after studying the novel.

Sold was an incredible story. At times it was witty and enjoyable (as Lakshmi describes her first encounter with TV), and at other times, it was truly difficult to read, simply because of what was happening to this young Nepali girl. I was aware of sex trafficking before reading this book, but to read it from the perspective of the young girl who was going through it was eye-opening and overwhelming. The reader has the opportunity to experience the entire ordeal through the eyes of Lakshmi, particularly as she slowly begins to realize what is actually happening to her--that she is not going to work in the city as a maid, but she has been tricked and sold into a life that is a genuine nightmare. I am truly happy that Ms. McCormick wrote this story. It's a story that anyone who has a heart for the vulnerable people in this world must read.

Lakshmi is a thirteen year old girl who lives with her family in Nepal. She wants to help her family out financially by working as a maid in the city but she is sold into a life of prostitution by her stepfather. This is a fictional story but is based on interviews the author conducted with aid workers and survivors themselves. This is a tough book to read but I highly recommend giving it a chance if you think you can handle the subject matter. It is written in a simple, almost poetic way and yet so much is conveyed. It's like not a single word was wasted. It's the type of book that will stay with me a long time as it is so haunting. Lakshmi might be a fictional character but she is the voice of countless victims and this is a book well worth reading.

I won’t kid you. SOLD is a difficult read. Patricia McCormick’s first-person account from thirteen-year-old sex trafficking victim, Lakshmi, will drain the color from your face and develop knots in your gut. As I read the book, lounging under a cozy blanket on my comfortable couch in my comfortable home, it repulsed and horrified me to consider the young children that were being violated in all parts of the world at that very moment. And that repulsion and horror won’t leave until their nightmare stops. After entering Lakshmi’s world, where a hug and a pencil meant everything, I felt ashamed of my apathy and ingratitude. Lakshmi’s gentle narrative shook me to say, “Look! See! Do something!” And that’s good. After all, that’s what the gutsy author/activist intended.Favorite lines:I have been beaten here, locked away, violated a hundred times and a hundred times more. I have been starved and cheated, tricked and disgraced. How odd it is that I am undone by the simple kindness of a small boy with a yellow pencil.

Wonderful writing about a very tough topic. My daughter had to read it for high school. I read it to make sure it wasn't too gory or graphic before she did. The author brings the sex slave trade in India to life through the eyes of a young girl. Very well written and not graphic at all. It gets you to feel the horror of it without being explicit. My daughter has a new appreciation for her country and the rights she has in it.

A MUST READ!!!!!!!! SOLD is a beautifully written book with incredible use of literary elements that make it a perfect book for high school. In every way, this book is perfect. McCormick perfectly illustrates the result of systemic sexism throughout the world. My students are enjoying this book immensely, and, for the first time, my Nepalese refugee students feel they can relate to, contribute to, and identify with the characters, culture, and discussions that are brought forth by this moving novel. This one is a life changer!!!!!!!!!!

Do not read this book in a public place.Because it will make you cry. It hit me in the details, in places where I least expected it.Many books have been written about depression. And where some books failed, My Heart and Other Black Holes didn’t. It didn’t come off as dramatic. It wrote depression for what it really is and the harsh reality that comes with it.“Anyone who has actually been that sad can tell you that there's nothing beautiful or literary or mysterious about depression.”I have friends who suffer from depression and I worry about them. I know I can never imagine half of what they’re going through but this book gave me a peek at what’s inside. This is a story about two people who want to die. And is it wrong to say that I understand why they do? Life can sometimes be cruel and there’s nothing we can do to stop it. It hurts to know someone is suffering and no matter how much you want to make things better for them, you can’t.What I loved most about this book are Aysel and Roman. Sure, they are not the most like-able characters but they were written in such a way that you will accept them for who they are. No pretensions, just their real selves and it isn’t always pretty. And that’s okay. This is not a love story. There is no romance here, only love and hope. This is about finding people who understand you and accepts you as you are. This is about fighting even when you no longer want to. This is about finding reasons to live. And I hope you do. I hope every single day, you do.

A relatable quick read that skips around and tastes like Whoppers. This a 3 that should be a 2.5, but I'm too much of a wimp to do that. Before I even started this book, I was slightly rooting for them to... die. Or, mostly Ronan. I'm not morbid, I just didn't want them both to necessarily survive.I also believe that something is wrong when all you can do is imagine the leading main character with an 8-year-olds voice. The story seemed to skip around, and lost the central voice of the story, the main reason Ayzel wanted to commit suicide. The two main characters relationship also sped up very quickly. It went from a 4 to a 9.This story was like wanting a Snickers but you could only get some Whoppers (the chocolate malt bakey things). If you're easily pacified with quick read (2 hours, tops) then knock yourself out with this book. The main reason my rating isn't a 2 is because I found it quite realistic. Being around the same age group, I was able to relate to multiple characters. And there you have it. Thanks for reading.

Kudos to Jasmine Warga for being able to capture the authenticity and essence of a depressed/suicidal 16 year old girl, meeting a depressed/suicidal 17 year old boy and falling in love. I haven't been 16 for quite some time (I am 29) but reading this novel made me recall some of those utterly painful, confusing, intense, coming of age feelings. How powerful love used to be, and is. How powerful sadness can be, and is. It was excellent writing and a great story. I thoroughly enjoyed being a reader who was witnessing first love when the characters were unaware of it, and how heartbreaking it felt when gloom and external/internal conflict were challenging the new relationship. My Heart and Other Black Holes is thought-provoking, has memorable characters and a ton of really awesome quotes that you will be highlighting/sharing with others/repeating to yourself for weeks after reading. It's difficult to praise the details of the book without giving too much away because the ending really should not be known until you discover it yourself. The subject matter is difficult and even though this book is marketed towards Young Adults, I am not sure I would encourage every young adult to read it. Suicide can not be glamorized or made to be anything less serious than it is. While the author accurately portrayed depression and suicidal thoughts, I feel like a young adult reader COULD (if already dealing with depression and suicidal thoughts) romanticize suicide and depression. Instead of deterring the reader or encouraging them to seek help and guidance, it COULD influence them to glorify their depression/suicidal thoughts. It is so easy to be influenced as a young adult reader. With that disclaimer, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would read it again as it is a relatively quick and beautifully written, yet easy, read.

Love the book. Very helpful for my trip. However, if you take this with you it will be confiscated at the airport. It's on the banned book list in China. I left mine at home and my friend brought his and they found it right away in his checked bag. They grilled him and said it was filled with lies. So write down important info and leave the book at home! Also, FYI, social media, Internet and email are not available in Tibet. So, don't plan on searching the Internet.

Perfect book fir my upcoming trip!

Very good book, informative and updated.

Great source of information for my upcoming trip to Tibet.

Very in depth overview of Tibet

Very clean and almost new book!

None of the places on my intinerary in Ambdo and Kham were even mentioned in this book. The general information is good.
