From the Back Cover

Understand Your Life's Purpose by Better Understanding God"My worship grows and grows as my perception of God grows. God cannot grow. My perception of God grows as I experience Him day after day. I should be more capable of worshiping God today than I was ten or twenty years ago."Delighting in God is the message A.W. Tozer intended to be the follow-up to The Knowledge of the Holy. He demonstrates how the attributes of God--those things God has revealed about himself--are a way to understand the Christian life of worship and service. Because we were created in the image of God, to understand who we are, we need to understand who God is and allow His character and nature to be reflected through us. We are here to serve and adore Him, and we can only fulfill that role by acknowledging who He is. This is the essence of the Christian life and the source of all our fulfillment, joy, and comfort.

A W Tozer was a tremendous preacher of his day and he was one of those preachers who spoke against the grain of his time. I grew up during the times of hellfire and brimstone preaching, including pulpit pounding, shouting, and the depiction of God as a judgmental being ready to strike down any who would oppose Him. Tozer, on the other hand, preaches a God who loves His children, who delights in them, who gave everything He had in order to have a relationship with them. James Snyder researched Tozer's sermons and articles to pull together this book to show us that we can have that loving relationship with God. Before I go too much farther, I want to say that this is not a mushy, lovey-dovey type book, but it is one that plumbs depths of God's being to find out what delights God and how we can find our delight in Him.One thing Tozer and Snyder make very clear is that if we can fully understand God, He's not God and he's too small to do us any good. His mystery should lead us to worship in the deepest way that we possibly can. It means that our prayers should be seeking His heart and His will in our lives. Having our prayers heard and answered depend on our obedience to God and our living our lives in the center of God's will.I have already recommended this book to several of my friends, bought copies for my husband and children, and I plan to take another read through this book and make some serious notes to enhance my Bible study times. I wish I could give it ten stars, but five seem to be the limit. My thanks to Bethany House for allowing me to read and review this book.

Tozer is superb whatever he is writing about. He is a man who buried himself in scripture and prayer and is still speaking autoritativly and meaningfully nearly 60 years later. He not only gives great insight but shows a great deal of common sense. He is also an excellent theologian and it comes from his heart and not academic research. I especially enjoy it when there is an audio book that goes with it. I have many of his books and haven't found a bad one yet. Highly recommend.

I have numerous books by A.W.Tozer and my soul has been provoked, encouraged and blessed with each one of them! He was and still is a gift to the body of Christ! But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint

My mother recommended this book, and I can see why. Tozer has a passion for reality and for pushing away the garbage found in the church of his time that still applies today. Near the end he mourns the lack of delight in our worship, in which we have to "whip it up" rather than enter in with it from the start. Our delight in God has been almost destroyed by modern legalism, such as the notion of "accountability" and "responsibilities" (both of which mean to me, "it's your fault you're in this mess") and "obedience" rather than grace and mercy! That's after a concert of deafening volume designed to provide an adrenaline rush, or a bunch of Charismatic chaos that goes against what Paul outlined in 1 Corinthians 14, all to stir up an emotional "high" that God is willing to provide without all that!Due to my own background, I found it hard to slog through Tozer's habit of using "Thee" and "Thou" when talking with God, and "you" when talking to the reader. His precious hymns were, for me, ruined by the same lack of delight that he faults "fundamentalism and evangelicalism" for in the opposite style. The big fact remains: we have a false god who gives no delight, while the true God, the Creator, Savior, and Counselor, waits for us with true delight!

I could read this every year and still find something new to put into practice.

The whole book its a very wonderful book. it was short.

Excellent book and a must read if you are passionate about knowing and developing your relationship with God.

One of my favorite authors so no surprise it is a fantastic book that is very inspiring that I would recommend to anyone wanting to further their walk with God.

Ten Years That Shook the City: San Francisco 1968-1978, by Chris Carlsson

Review

"Militant urbanist and writer, Chris Carlsson, has brought together a brilliant collection of essays by historians and memoirists of a neglected decade that reveal the originality and solidity of social movements which, despite tragic failures, have guaranteed that San Francisco would maintain a utopian vision of what is possible. Each contribution is a jewel, storytelling at its best." --Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz, author of "A Outlaw Woman: A Memoir of the War Years, 1960-1975""What a vivid, well-written tour through the wide range of community struggles and movements in this most political of American cities." --Chester Hartman, author of City for Sale: The Transformation of San Francisco"Ten Years That Shook the City is a brilliant palimpsest of a time and a place: San Francisco in a revolutionary decade that changed just about every part of the city and everything about how we live today. This magnificent collection brings together voices from the cutting edges of feminism, gay liberation, Latino and Asian mobilizations, environmentalism, community housing and more, and proves once again what an extraordinary city we have the good fortune to inherit." --Richard Walker, Professor of Geography, University of California, and author of The Country in the City and The Conquest of Bread"Ten Years that Shook the City examines the early history of many of San Francisco's cultural treasures that provide the bedrock for today's social change efforts. Written by people who were active in building the everyday institutions we now take for granted, the collection examines the radical democratic ethos that still permeates the city's politics and cultural life. This is a vital resource, which provides the backstory for all of us who came to San Francisco because of its radical culture and politics." --Dorothy Kidd, Professor of Media Studies at the University of San Francisco"I absolutely love this book. It's quirky, interesting, and practical. This is a travel guide that you will pick up just to read, in addition to using it for finding Beat destinations to visit. Beat Atlas has my highest recommendation." --Rick Dale, The Daily Beat"What did happen in the years following the storied 1960's? Did political and social activism die away, move to the country, or get co-opted by the mainstream? Clearly not, as detailed in this new book of essays, edited by local community activist and historian, Chris Carlsson. Primarily first-person accounts, each chapter is chock full of stories from the front lines, written by participants who organized, agitated, and created social change in the city well into the 1970s and beyond. Currents run together from the anti-war and labor movements, gay and women's liberation, struggles against redevelopment and racism and towards the building of cooperatives, ecological awareness, and political art and culture. Gathered together, these snapshots of activism tell a powerful story, showing how the groundwork was laid for much of the progressive movement that still exists today in San Francisco. The lessons of continuity are strong, with the foundations of many of today's institutions and organizations rooted in the radical political and cultural movements from this time period." --Susan Goldstein, City Archivist, San Francisco Public Library"For anyone who lived through San Francisco's greatest years, the 1960s and 1970s, this book is a treasure-house of reminders, information and perspectives on what happens when a community really AWAKENS politically, ecologically and socially. No-one has ever done a better job of capturing this than Chris Carlsson in this book. For those who were not here, settle down and learn what the 60s-70s cultural revolution in the city may teach us about how we should deal with a difficult future. This is great reading for anyone." --Jerry Mander, author of Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television

San Francisco is an unforgettable city with a spirit, vibrance, and energy still there. In reading this book which is a collection of essays about life in the city from 1968 to 1978. The decades ends on the twin tragedies of Jonestown followed by the assassination of Mayor George Moscone and his openly gay supervisor Harvey Milk only 9 days later. The end of the sixties opened the minds, eyes, and ears to a war in Vietnam met with criticism and doubt. The Berkeley campus of the University of California became a symbol of rebellion in a non-violent matter. They held protests against injustice and outrage with passions and convictions. Besides Vietnam, they were still plenty of protests and movements to correct injustice in other avenues. This book offers a rare insight into the worlds where immigrants were poorly treated as well as Native Americans in the city. The city like San Francisco has a mixture of peoples from all walks of life. I was stunned by the racism that occurred in the predominantly African American section known as Fillmore which was occurring as well. There was a sense of old versus new in the city. It broke my heart reading about thousands of Victorian homes demolished. I don't know if it was for low income housing.San Francisco reminds me a lot of New York City with the gentrification process. Both cities are expensive for the average person. The West Village in New York City and the Castro in San Francisco were once the center for the gay movements. Today, the West Village is so gentrified and family oriented that something got lost along the way just as the Castro probably has lost that vibrance of protest and cries for justice.People of all walks of life including women, African Americans, the gay and lesbian communities, immigrants, and other disenfranchised minorities fought back in those years against the injustices, inequality, and degradation. Still, it goes on but now the passion and the flair for change has moved on or moved away from the central location. The main reason that I bought this book was to read about Jonestown and the Peoples Temple. There was only three pages to the topic. Matthew Roth wrote about his communal experience. The Peoples Temple in the 1970s offered a variety of services including drug and alcohol addiction; counseling; food; shelter; jobs; and a purpose for their members. The tragedy in Jonestown may have been far removed but the remains took more than 6 months to finally be placed at Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland, California. Following the massacre, the remains were at an air force base in Dover, Delaware (three thousand miles away).I was glad that the author reached out to Laura Johnston Kohl (author of Jonestown Survivor) for her contributions to understanding the tragedy around Jonestown. I was surprised that Congressman Leo Ryan's name was omitted from the text. In fact when the authors were describing the housing politics, they didn't cite the fact that Rev. Jim Jones was on the housing authority board as gratitude from Mayor George Moscone for helping him win the election.Still, there is so much to talk about with San Francisco and a time that I wished that I had live through where anything was possible. I felt that then Governor Ronald Reagan was far more liberal than we imagined regarding gay rights which isn't surprising since he was from the Hollywood entertainment scene.I could sit here and write forever till I'm blue in the face about this city and this time period. I still miss San Francisco even though I've only been there once in 1999. The city is hospitable, friendly, liberal, and welcoming at times. The city has it's share of problems such as homelessness, drugs, alcohol addiction, high cost of living, etc. but it's still one of the best cities in the world.I wished the editor had included a map or maps of the area. There is plenty of visuals such as cartoons and posters and murals highlighting the city's art importance. The book has a variety of interests besides women's rights, gay rights, cartoonists, musicians, murals, Vietnam war, and others to attract the interest of the readers. There is a section even devoted to ecology and organic food long before it became fashionable.Still, San Francisco has always been on the edge in leading the future. If only more of us would return to stand up for the injustices all around us. That was the meaning of San Francisco during this era, it was to stand up and fight until we all lived equally and just in our society. All I can say is that I love and miss San Francisco and can't wait to go back there for a visit or more.

All kinds of great information about a wonderful city at a time when new ideas struggled for life.

Excellent essays on Third World Strike and Black Panthers and Third Worldism in the Bay Area. Also essays by Pocho-Che editors and publishers. Interesting and important histories that aren't normally circulating.

I loved the chapter written by Mary Jean Robertson considering I've met her in real life. She took an AIS class with me and her chapter was very useful for writing my term paper. I never even knew about the occupation of Alcatraz during the 1960s nor was I aware of the positive impacts it gained for American Indians at the time. I think the occupy movement going on today should look back at the occupation that happened then and get some pointers. The 1969 Occupation of Alcatraz made headlines news and managed to capture the support of not only the media but also the public. It's a highly engaging read and I would recommend it to anyone.

1,000 Years Ago on Planet Earth

From Publishers Weekly

Collard (Animal Dads) sets the clock back 1000 years as he looks at a dozen civilizations at the turn of the last millennium. One spread is devoted to each of the locales, which include central and southern Europe, where people suffered from a lack of formal education and strong central government; the Middle East and Mediterranean region, where Islamic culture flourished; southern Africa, where the Shona built cities and traded with Arab merchants; and India, which was experiencing cultural prosperity under the Chola Dynasty. While the author offers some intriguing tidbits, the text is often oversimplified or vague ("Printed books enabled the Song to educate large numbers of students to govern China's enormous population"; "Aborigines believed that the activities of Rainbow Serpents and other Ancestral Beings created the plants, animals, rocks, and places of Australia"). Unfortunately, in Hunt's (Bestiary) double-page ink-and-watercolor art, many of the scenes seem just as generic as the writing, lacking the specificity of a narrative drama that might have given readers a more encompassing visual impression of the epoch and each locale. A good idea, disappointingly executed. Ages 6-10. (Sept.) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4 As a millennium ends, it's only natural to be curious about its beginning. Here, Collard aims to pique that curiosity, not with a catalog of specific events, but by profiling 12 world cultures circa A.D. 1000. Each one gets a spread that combines a column of general information with a large painted scene, generally of earnest-looking people at work or play in a distinctive setting. Like the text, Hunt's illustrations are not crowded with details but those he does choose to include are carefully, clearly depicted. Though the selection of stopovers has a Eurocentric slant, young armchair tourists will also get glimpses of South America's Chimu people, early Shona culture in Africa, southern India under the Chola Dynasty, and North America's Mississippian civilization, among others. Capped by short lists of books and Web sites, this quick, sweeping survey suggests some of the ways life has and has not changed in the last 10 centuries. This was a compilation of real personal accounts of encounters with unusual phenomena. Some are heartbreaking and others are typical encounters, familiar to readers of other similar books. The author introduces each segment with a brief explanation of the topic, Bigfoot, Ghosts, UFOs, etc. The advice given should be heeded, as these topics are nothing to play around with, as many whose stores were told found out. I read this book using immersion reading while listening to the audio book. I felt the narration was rote and lacking in emotion. Another narrator like Ken O'Brien would've been better suited for this type of material.

Write some books please !!! This was total page turned i couldn't out the dam book done . An excellent read ! Loved it

Loved this book, and look forward to reading more from this author! Told by the people that had these experiences, and lots of lore also.

Proofreading before publishing should be done though. Many spelling errors and some sentences were hard to follow. That said the book made for interesting reading.

I used this guidebook during a month trip throughout Ethiopia in late 2015 and was for the most part very happy with it. I did the northern historical loop, spent time in Addis, and also traveled south to Arba Minch and South Omo region. Philip Briggs writes in an entertaining way, and I definitely became accustomed to his "voice" as I dug deeper into the book.A found the maps in this guide very good, and very intuitive. Landmarks noted on city maps just made SENSE, and made them easy to navigate. Plus, I found that the maps and hotel references were still reasonably up to date - which can be a major failing of some other guidebooks.A note: those accustomed to using Lonely Planet guides may need a bit of adjustment time to get used to using this guidebook, as it's not laid out in the same way. Important information is sometimes buried a bit in narrative sections of the book. Best practices of using this book involve actually READING it, rather than just strictly REFERENCING it. There's a lot of useful information in here but you have to find it in unlikely places/pages at times. All and all, recommended.

I just used this guide for a whirlwind 10 day trip through Addis, Lalibela, Axum, and Gondar. Some notes:- Prices for lodging were strangely outdated for a guide published within the past few months. They were often twice the listed price, with some managers laughing when I showed them the Bradt guide. That said, quoting the Bradt price provided a decent base to begin negotiations to pay something above the Bradt price but still reasonable.- Separate but related, more often than not the listed email for lodging listings would bounce back. Didn't matter in the end, since every place I showed up at had a room available or there was a room at another place nearby. But just a heads up that it isn't worth your time to bother.- I believe the book mentions this but really it should be put in bold capital letters: DO NOT BUY DOMESTIC AIRLINE TICKETS OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY. They are available for a substantial discount from a travel agent in the country. Google one and call them (I used Airlink) instead of booking through Orbitz, Kayak, etc. A one way flight from Addis to Lalibela was $170 on Kayak. Tickets from Addis to Lalibela to Axum to Gondar to Addis was $220 TOTAL through the travel agent.- In the write-up for every airport is the notice that flights on Ethiopian Air must be confirmed the day before at an Ethiopian Air office. This is simply not true. They issue the same e-tickets you are used to booking anywhere else and do not need any special confirmation.- Lalibela: The need for a tour guide was oversold. The book makes it seem like one is necessary, to ward off throngs of children if nothing else, but I roamed peacefully and had a great time. Also note the price for the churches increased recently from the $21 listed in the book to $50. But the ticket is good for four days, and if you ask around I bet you'll find someone with a day or two left willing to sell at a discount. Lastly, Lalibela Hotel was an excellent place to stay, even better than the good description in the book.- Addis: The book makes no mention of the fact that the Bolo Hotel is located next to a club that plays loud music until 5am. Unless you plan to be one of those dancing the night away I would choose somewhere else.Overall the book served me well. I bought the Kindle edition because I didn't have time to receive the guide in the mail. It was nice to save on baggage weight, but flipping back and forth to maps was a bit of a chore. Making bookmarks helped, but you still have to zoom and pan constantly.

This has been around for awhile and there's a new one due out soon, though this one was great for our trip this past summer. Not that much changes very quickly in Ethiopia. The stories about places were useful and helped us to plan our time in the country. I normally use trip advisor when we travel, but with internet not easily available in Ethiopia, it was necessary to have a book to take with us for reference to restaurants and hotels. In most cases, the writers had given some choices for places and I just confirmed whether we'd stay or eat there by checking up to date reviews when we did have internet. It was also helpful that he let us know that there were some places being built or would be available by the time it went to press so we looked for those.I'll warn you there aren't a lot of photos, like I'm used to with DK Eyewitness guides, but there is plenty of "meat" in the written words. I used the maps on my iPhone as we went around the cities. You can just snap a photo and refer to it when you are walking. If you're going to Ethiopia, I'd recommend this book for travel information as well as cultural briefings.

I have spend a lot of time in Ethiopia over the last couple of years and as far as I'm concerned, this is the essential guide to Ethiopia. It's organized well - the chapters are ordered in a way for you to plan long or short itineraries around the country that really allow you to get a feel for the real Ethiopia (not that there's so much of an tourism industry that you'd miss it).It also gives great advice on hotels, restaurants and sights.I do think that there are a few shortcomings. Several of the restaurants in Addis are no longer open, and they miss a few great places. Part of this is the nature of the Addis restaurant scene, in which restaurants are constantly opening and closing. I have also found the prices to be a bit out of date - especially for hotels, but never underestimate how much the ferenji markup can be.Despite these shortcomings, the book is generally thorough, accurate, and pleasant to read. Finally, having owned several Ethiopia guide books, I can say with authority that this is by far the best. Unfortunately, Lonely Planet just hasn't gotten Ethiopia down. All in all - if you are headed to Ethiopia, this is the book you want.

Review

“I know Shaun T as the tough love motivator and butt kicker behind my favorite workout videos. His workouts are HARD, but I always feel amazing after them—I can’t believe I survived, and I can’t believe that my body can do all that crazy stuff. But I had no idea where Shaun learned the techniques that help to inspire, push, heal, and help me (and the millions of others who have gotten fit along with him).” —Serena Williams, 4-time Olympic gold medalist and 23-time Grand Slam champion“Shaun T has motivated millions to change their lives and it has little to do with his chiseled physique. It is through his courageous truth, overcoming childhood abuse and insurmountable challenges that you realize it starts with mind-set. T is for Transformation is for everyone who is ready to face their truths, move past their pasts, reclaim the greatness that was always inside of them, and take control of their lives!—Chalene Johnson, New York Times bestselling author, host of podcast The Chalene Show, and creator of SmartSuccess“Shaun is a unicorn. He's super fit, an incredible motivator, and dances better than Shakira. He's helped millions of people transform their bodies and change their lives. And he's the most genuine, down-to-earth dude you'll ever meet. I feel blessed to know him and to be able to call him a friend. And I can't recommend this book enough to people who want to take control of their lives and maximize what they've got.”—BJ Gaddour, Men’s Health Fitness Director“Shaun T’s new book was a game changer for me! I knew Shaun would help me guide my fitness, but I had no idea that he could also inspire my personal success goals so greatly!”—Cody Alan, host of Country Music Television’s CMT Hot 20 Countdown“Not only has Shaun inspired millions of people to transform their bodies, his incredible personal transformation in this book will no doubt help millions more transform their souls and hearts as well.”—Harley Pasternak, celebrity trainer and New York Times bestselling author of The Body Reset Diet“T is for Transformation is so much more than just a personal memoir. I finished the book feeling like a better version of me. I’ve been lucky enough to have Shaun T as personal mentor and friend for years, so it was no surprise to FEEL his motivation exploding out the pages of his book.”—Bob Ruff, host of the Truth & Justice podcast“Shaun T is the most caring person in this world, and his book will be life changing for those who truly want to dig deep and transform even if they've had a rough go at life so far. You just gotta Trust and Believe in Shaun T and he will show you the way.”—Drew Manning, New York Times bestselling author of Fit2Fat2Fit“If you want to be a better human, let Shaun T be your guide. This groundbreaking book is a crash course on how to thrive in a world so often stacked against us. With your newfound superpowers and Shaun on your side, your obstacles don’t stand a chance.” —Abel James, New York Times bestselling author and award-winning host of Fat-Burning Man“Shaun T is in a class by himself and knows the struggles we all face day-to-day. Having been fortunate enough to work with him on set, this book T is for Transformation encompasses all the magic and positivity he exudes in person, while giving the mental tools we all need to succeed.”—Albert Bianchini, executive producer, Milojo Productions“T is for Transformation is a testament to the fact that within every obstacle there is opportunity. Shaun T is a life changer—I dare you to read this book and not want to take on the world.”—Andrea Boehlke, Survivor contestant and host of PEOPLE Now“Shaun T's raw and authentic energy is like a wildfire that will sweep over all your excuses and transform you into the unstoppable sexy beast you've always had within you. Trust and Believe that Shaun T will be sweating, burning and digging deeper right there next to you every step of the way.”—Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Olympic gold medalist and 8-time Grand Slam Champion“Not long ago I tweeted that at 43 I found myself in the parking lot of a gym, contemplating the fact that I had been dieting and exercising to lose weight since I was 9 years old. It was a sobering and ultimately demoralizing realization and, if anything, really undermined any motivation I had to keep at it. But Shaun's book T is For Transformation and his message changed my perception of what the struggle really needed to be about. His Truthbombs, "It isn't about the weight, fit isn't about a number, if you're chasing a number you'll never catch it" made me pause and reexamine what my goals of the last 30-plus years have been. His message to simply do better each day than the previous day with consistency is what I really needed to hear. Focusing on how the journey makes you feel versus arbitrary numbers on a scale is the mindshift I've needed to think about fitness not as unachievable, but as something I can achieve every single day by simply moving my body and putting good things in it. Shaun shares his personal stories of struggle and the mental breakthroughs that help him overcome them, which means he knows what we are going through and is not lecturing from a pedestal. I know that I'll visit and revisit this book for years to come, every time I need a pick-me-up and a voice telling me to keep going!” —Rabia Chaudry, New York Times bestselling author of Adnan’s Story and co-host and co-producer of the podcast Undisclosed“As someone who knows Shaun T well, I still found myself deep into this book finding out even more about him than I knew before and being motivated and inspired in new ways. I finished this book feeling inspired to take action, ready to tackle my life, and motivated to truly trust and believe in who I am.” —Danielle Natoni, creator of Fit & Funky and Beachbody LIVE Master Trainer“This one touches my soul to the very core! Being authentically and unapologetically me is something that I pride myself on... but also something that takes an immense amount of hard work and perseverance. As someone who is a people pleaser and a Yes Girl, it's easy to fall into the trap of compromise... compromising your true self.I can't even begin to imagine what little Shauny endured for so many years. To see him fight his way out of that dark place not only inspires me to be braver, it shows me that no matter what life has in store for us, we can all have a Secret Backpack. We can unleash our superpowers whenever we are faced with life struggles and challenges.I'm so proud of him for all that he has overcome and accomplished and am extremely grateful to have been impacted by his strength, courage, friendship, and love!” —Tania Baron, founder of Team Machine and Beachbody LIVE Master Trainer“I expected this book to be about the body. How to get fitter and stronger, but it is so much more. Almost autobiographical, it creates pathways for your journey, body and mind. Many of us remember “Come on” from the Insanity program. I keep hearing “Dig Deep.” This is a perfect way to get the tools necessary to understand that nothing comes easy but as long as you know how to focus, anything is possible. It is NOT a book about Shaun T—it is a book about you. He and his life story are a conduit through which you can achieve your dreams.Find out how the kid who never knew his birth father and built up protective barriers against the world grew to become one of the most powerful forces in self-improvement and one of the nicest and inspirational people I have ever interviewed. Now I have some answers, and so will you.”—Eddie Nestor, host of BBC Radio London’s Drivetime with Eddie Nestor

I love this book!!! I can tell it is one that I will read through multiple times. Shaun T is an incredibly inspirational person. I found him through his workouts but it became clear quickly that his focus was on building mental toughness and resiliency using the physical fitness as the means. And it works! In his book, he lays out his story in detail and uses it to share the skills and techniques he's developed to become the person he is today. He uses a series of exercises to get you thinking about your life/situation. It's not necessarily about telling his readers what to do and more about getting them to think about who they want to be and defining their own path to get there.I'd also strongly recommend listening to his podcasts (Trust and Believe is the current one and Define Your Life is also good to listen to!). He provides more motivation with the same straightforward and honest earnestness with which he wrote the book. And, of course, his workouts are amazing!! Shaun T is such a great motivator for both mental and physical fitness!

I tried Shaun's workouts and could not manage all the jumping due to knee and foot injuries but loved his enthusiasm so bought this book.It was beyond motivating and after a very rough 2 years emotionally it is just what I needed.I have highlighted and bookmarked almost every page and was amazed at all he overcome, yet he's not bitter or depressed.I am not able to work out with him but feel that his book will be my constant reminder that if our mind wants it and wills it,we can make our dreams happen.I have a teenage Son who recently came out to us and he has overcome some adversity and plan to share Shaun's story with him

A very easy, heartfelt and soul searching read. Shaun T lays it all out. If the book doesn't make you think and question your own will, you're doing it wrong. It really adds and gives more context to some of his favourite phrases from his workout videos. Will it change your life, maybe. But will it make you want to dig deep and make some changes for the better, definitely.

Honestly, just when I thought I couldn’t adore him anymore, I read this gem.I, like millions of other people, am consistently inspired and pushed forward by Shaun T.’s workouts and positivity in life. T25 is the first workout program I completed after delivering my son. Insanity Max 30 remains the program that I am proudest to have been able to complete (Sweat Intervals, y’all. DAMN.).But to read his story, to learn his struggles (MANY that he and I share), and to see how hard he worked and works today...I’ll never look at him the same way. He has cemented his place as one of my personal heroes.

I’m not much of a person who reads all the time. I’ve been trying to read more, so I can learn more about others and widen my horizons. This book is really motivating and a great read. I suggest it for anyone. He also writes about some very personal over-comings. It’s really inspiring and “real.” He had a great personality throughout the book. Fun and down to earth. I got it on kindle books through amazon for like 9 bucks or something like that. Definitely worth the money.

Shaun T's story is truly one of inspiration. He is just what he needs to be at just the right time. We all have struggles in life. It is the ability to get up and press forward that gives your life quality. To not be ruled by negative past experiences. To take them and grow from them. Everyone deserves to have a quality of life. To have good relationships. Foster the positivity, and remove everything else.

He was honest and motivating. I read a lot of self help & health books was surprised how enjoyable and informative. He shares his life struggles and how he overcome them very inspirational. Hip Hop abs was my first DVD from beachbody years ago and since then i have purchased others but i love Shawn T. You can tell he is a really good guy. Wish you continue success Shawn T.

Shaun T helped change my life with his workouts. Now I get to continue my journey with more of his motivational words. His truthbombs hit home. Thank you for this book!!!

When, after reading portions of this book, I expressed extreme dislike of the content, I was told by the publisher that they anticipated the book would be "controversial." But then, I guess heresy always is.At multiple turns, Andy Stanley directly contradicts what Jesus Himself said about the Christian faith, and then he tries to tell you that it's really what Jesus meant. For example, he says that what Jesus came to do is so new that the Old Testament doesn't matter any more and isn't even authoritative for Christians. It's just a stumbling block, so old-fashioned and out-dated and irrelevant. Except, of course, that any Christian who has read the red letters knows that Jesus Himself said that He came to fulfill the law, not to abolish it, which means that Jesus certainly thought it relevant and important and authoritative.Andy also says one reason to count out the Old Testament is that we're not sacrificing animals at our altars any more. That is true, of course...unless you realize that every Sunday, we celebrate the sacrifice of the Lamb as the atonement for our sins, an act that we cannot possibly understand as significant unless we understand the sacrificial laws in the Old Testament.Andy says that Jesus instituted a new orientation, where it's now more about how you love the persons around you than how you present yourself to God. Jesus was more concerned with the second commandment, which is not second but kind of a second part of the first commandment, and therefore completely equal to it, than the first. Which sounds nice, but there are plenty of atheists and even satanists who love their neighbor; loving your neighbor never leads you to love God. But loving God always leads you to love your neighbor. In fact, you cannot love your neighbor in a God-pleasing way until and unless you love God first. Maybe that's why Jesus said it was the first and second commandment, not 1A and 1B like Andy asserts.Although I could go on with examples, I will give just one more. Andy says that another reason the Old Testament just isn't important is because "you" aren't in it. It's about a people, God's people, a collective entity and the nitty-gritty of personal, Jesus-died-just-for-me faith doesn't show up until the New Testament and since you are a person and not a people, you only have to read the personal stuff in the NT. Again, it sounds good, particularly to a generation that's been sold on the idea that Jesus died just for you and if it was only for you, He'd do it all over again because He loves you that much. He DOES love you that much, but God's plan from the very beginning has been the redemption of the whole world, not just you. If you think God's story is about you, you're missing 99.999999999% of it and losing out on the grandness and holiness and incredibleness of God in the process.Heresy is rarely, if ever, new. It's often old ideas circling back around in new clothing, and here we have it again. We have a pastor who directly contradicts the word of Jesus and the overwhelming testimony of the Bible to try to make Christianity more palatable, claiming that more palatable means more powerful. But the true strength of early Christianity was the depths of the passion of the people for it, so much so that they were willing to die for their faith. Andy Stanley tries here to give you something to live for, but it doesn't inspire you to die for it. So it's not the radical First Century faith that he claims that it is. It's something far, far less that Jesus Himself wouldn't even recognize.

I only gave this book a one star since that's the lowest rank Amazon allows. Stanley's book is so theologically off base that it would take several books to correct all the errors, half-truths, and outright mess he has created. In the end Stanley is at least honest enough to admit that he doesn't really want the "Old Testament" as those are not his people and YHVH is not his God. I read the Apostolic Scripture as living in continuity with the Hebrew Scripture but Stanley would have us see mass discontinuity between the two. In the end my view of YHVH and the ongoing validity/authority of the Hebrew Scripture departs radically from Stanley. I found his explanations at times so frustratingly mis-informed and completely inaccurate. I don't recommend this book for anyone unless you want a bad view of the Hebrew Scripture which inevitably leads to a bad view of YHVH and Jews. A full length review of all the problems with the book would require Amazon acquiring another server. Save yourself time and money and get some better Biblically based books.

I began reading Andy Stanley’s book with some optimism. North Point Community Church, where Andy Stanley is senior pastor, averages 38,000 people in attendance among its six campuses each week in the Atlanta area. Results Speak!Andy (the name he likes to be called) boldly attacks Christianity as it is today. He immediately says, “Modern, mainstream Christianity is fatally flawed. These flaws make it fragile and indefensible in the public square.” Before he reveals why he believes this, he bashes post third century Christianity. After discussing Christ’s prophecy of the destruction of Israel’s Temple, Andy says, “God’s covenant with the nation had served its purpose. It was no longer needed. Why? Because something greater than the temple had come. Something that would make the temple, and everything associated with it obsolete. Something new. Something better. Something for the whole world.” (p. 65) Uh-oh! What does “everything associated with it” mean? Does he mean not only the ceremonial and civil law, but also the moral law, the Prophets, and the Poetry? Soon, we will know and shudder. Enjoy my satire as I enjoyed Andy’s.Andy’s First Point. He gives equal time to attacking B.C. Judaism and A.D. church history. After this anti-Jew, anti-Christian barrage, we finally get a definition of Andy’s first point. He says “According to Paul [the Apostle in his letter to the Romans], Jesus followers are dead to the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments have no authority over you. None. To be clear: Thou shalt not obey the Ten Commandments.” (p. 135) I am shocked, shocked! Andy makes valiant efforts at scriptural support this assertion. All, outright failures. Andy consistently makes critical errors in logic, reason, and context. In his most blatant error, he didn’t include the content of the unconditional, everlasting covenant with Abraham. God promised Abraham the land and people later named Israel, an absolute contradiction to his thesis. Andy distinguished this covenant against the “conditional” covenant with Moses. This alone refutes his thesis all the old is dead. Please study the others for yourselves, it is not difficult.Andy’s Second Point. Andy discovers what no Theologian in history has discovered, the “replacement” command. He quotes John 13:34, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” He says, “Jesus didn’t issue his new command as an additional commandment to the existing list of commands. Jesus issued his new commandment as a replacement for everything in the existing list. Including the Big Ten.” (p. 196) What a bold and unproven “everything” claim! Without God’s moral law, Andy’s substitute dings empty and hollow. Sin and righteousness evaporate into a soft unreality. Objective morality flushed down the toilet. “Good and Evil” become undefinable and unknowable. Let’s take this to its logical conclusion.Where do these fallacious assertions end? Well, Andy commands each of us to become a “Love Machine,” The Miracles (1975). Look it up; you’ll Love it. Let’s call this Love Machine “Love As Jesus Loved,” LAJL. Hey Andy, let’s make some LAJL pins, shirts, hats, and bumper stickers. Who knows, we could get rich. LAJL stuff might really take off! “Love Machine”, with slight modifications, will be our theme song. Imagine… the worship room is dark. Laser lights pulse with the music. See the spot lights, fog machines, and 3D hologram on stage in the campus assemblies. Really good musicians with a worship leader create amazing feelings of warmth, love, and passion in the gathering’s hearts. See the community groups of all kinds, men’s, women’s, singles, mixed singles, married with and without children, empty nesters, LGBTQ singles and families, pimps and prostitutes, sex traffickers, mixed age pedophiles, maybe even some BDSM’s. Ok… maybe I went a bit too far... but maybe not. We must love all people as Jesus loves, right? Imagine… there is nothing in this mindset to stop a perilous drift away from our Holy, Loving, True and Righteous God.Andy’s Definition of Love. He gives a very eloquent presentation about love and the “one another” commands in the New Testament. How does Andy offer to put his one command into practice, to make us into his Love Machine? He comes up with a few memorable lines to aid us. I call them, “Andy’s LAJL Suggestions”. He concludes these chapters with, “To love the way Jesus called us to love requires a complete break with the inspired but retired, beautiful but obsolete, old covenant. As long as we continue mixing old with new, we will never be free to love as we have been called to love.” (p. 245) Hey Andy, You believe love must be unleashed from all those moral bindings and boundaries. May Margaret Sanger be praised! When I ask, Are Andy’s LAJL Suggestions better than the Ten Commandments? As delightful as Psalm 1? Wiser and more beautiful than Proverbs 4? Or the woman of Proverbs 31:10-31? The answer is absolutely and categorically, “NO!”, a shack beside a skyscraper.Dealing with uncertainty about how to LAJL, Andy says, “So while I’m not always sure what to believe, and while my views on a variety of things continue to mature and change, I almost always know what love requires of me. So, do you.” (p. 259) Andy, how do you know, I know? Hmm? Well, I don’t know. I’m always trying to figure it out. What is good, better, and best? Hey, I have all these conflicting desires, gifts, strengths, and callings and they’re not always jiving? How could I possibly know, without the moral law, what love requires? Well, my poor, ignorant self. Boo-hoo. My Andy Love Machine, left without power or data, sputters.Conclusion.In the final section of his book, Andy says, “When it comes to stumbling blocks to faith, the Old Testament is right up there at the top of the list.” (p. 280) With Andy so influential in the Evangelical community, I am horrified and my heart breaks. Where will this lead so many churches around the world? Has Andy joined the, “I desire, I choose, I am” personal-identity crowd? I sincerely love Andy and his Dad, Pastor Charles Stanley. I feel like they’re my many-years media bro’s. Has Andy become a Love Machine heretic? The horror I feel, having read this book, causes me to desperately pray that Andy will back away from the cliff’s edge. But I can’t seem to hope that he hasn’t already jumped. Andy, come back.

If you have the courage to read this book with an open mind, it will change the way you think about Jesus, Christianity, and the church. It will empower you to live a more influential and attractive faith. And it will strengthen your own personal faith. It's a must-read for the Jesus-follower who truly loves to think and be challenged.

Review

“You don't have to be into cycling to reap the benefits of Gironimo! An entertaining and jauntily written travelogue that at times made me laugh out loud. With Moore as your guide, you may want to hurry over to Italy on the next flight out.” - The New York Times Book Review“In this funny and fascinating tale of cycling, writer Tim Moore takes the reader on a journey few will ever attempt, let alone finish: a 3,162-kilometer route over the Italian mountains that was once the setting of a notoriously difficult bicycle race. On a mission that could easily veer into preachiness, Moore is too humorous a narrator to let the story go off track. Hilarious.” - Minneapolis Star Tribune“Disgusted by the Lance Armstrong scandal and disappointed in the dispassionate, technology-driven cycling world, British humorist Moore challenges himself to ride the route of the 1914 Giro d’Italia. His journey is peppered with self-deprecating humor, and his interactions with the people he encounters and charming towns he visits are very entertaining. Moore’s patented combination of humor and travelogue proves thoroughly engaging.” - Booklist (starred review)“Moore’s adventures are perfect for adventure readers, cyclists, and sports fans alike.” - Midwest Book Review“A superbly funny read.” - Cycling Weekly“One of the funniest books about sport ever written.” - The Sunday Times

Just finished this book yesterday. Moore's account of his ride is very enjoyable, as the text balances his personal experiences with those who took part in the 1914 race. His humor is pleasant, although an occasional British term or reference went right by me. Nevertheless, this was rare and gave me the chance to look up some terms. Back to the book itself. I'd recommend it for those who enjoy an author with daring and wit, and for serious cyclists (I haven't been on a bike for years and was never into the sport), and for anyone looking for something new and novel to read about.

Fun book, but for cycling wonks only. Wacky Brit decides to not only ride the insane route, but "builds" a period authentic bike, wears authentic period clothes, takes off in Italy's August heat, alone, and nearly completely clueless. He makes it a fun read, once he gets the bloody gear assembled and actually takes off a quarter through the book, but britishisms abound. He's clearly ridden distances before, but it's hard to understand why he insists on one ridiculous woolen outfit (OK, it's authentic) has almost no mechanical aptitude, spare parts or tools (not authentic), has no support car following (not authentic) has no food plan beyond pizza, and a mostly one star hotel budget, when he can find one (insanely not Authentic--30 days on the road, vs the original 8). By the end you understand his 70ish mothers sentiment: I'm glad he's still alive, but it's a miracle and a mystery as to exactly how or why.

An entertaining, light read. Not a classic by any stretch but an amusing book if you're interested in cycling and enjoy this particular type of very English humorous writing: the kind that gets most of its laughs from the author poking self-deprecating fun at himself, as well as from descriptions of the 'eccentric foreigners' he encounters along his way.In that sense, it seems a bit quaint, but it's genuiniely funny in parts and in a sense the dated style goes perfectly with the subject matter.

BRAVO! I enjoyed Moore's French Revolutions very much and thought this would be even funnier and more entertaining given my interest and familiarity with Italy combined with that uniquely British love/hate relationship they have for La Bella Paese. Has a bit more British-style colloquialisms than I care for, but nonetheless enjoyable for anyone with interests in the Giro d'Italia and cycling in general.

Fighting his ancient and disintegrating bike over the route of the toughest Giro ever, Tim Moore again delights in recalling his own misfortunes and marvels, with a keen eye for both Italy's beauty and the raw pain of competitive cycling in any era.

A humorist gifted with a knack for colorful writing, Tim Moore serves a punch line on every page whether with observation or self-deprecation. I couldn't contain my laughter. Haven't exactly read too many bicycling books but hard to say this isn't the funniest. A tale of a man touring mid-life crisis at our expense. Hilarious.

If you love cycling or Italy, this is a wonderfully fun read. An antique bike on an unforgettable journey. Even over his 30+ days v the 8 days of the 1914 Giro, it's quite the adventure. And I love his imagine commentary from Phil and Paul.

A well written story. It is amazing the detail he went into to duplicate the 1914 tour. I found the references throughout the book of the participants in the 1914 tour to be distracting because the names were unknown to me. Their courage in finishing the 1914 tour was unbelievable to me. Tim Moore writes with a nice humorous way but sometime he tries to be too cute. All in all it was interesting and a enjoyable read.
