In a much publicized debate between Bill Nye the Science guy and Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis, a common retort was made by the non-Christian position that the Bible had been translated hundreds of times over the last three millennia before it ever made it into American English. The implication was clear—the transmission and translation process of the Bible is much akin to the children’s’ game telephone. Is this true? Paul D. Wegner, professor of Old Testament at Phoenix Seminary, has written an excellent and thorough text on the history of the Bible. With a keen eye to history and a wealth of knowledge concerning the various manuscripts, Dr. Wegner highlights the flaccidity of the charge against the Bible.The book is divided into five parts: preliminary matters regarding the Bible, canonization of the Bible, transmission of the Bible, early translations of the Bible, and English translations of the Bible. Section one discusses various preliminary issues concerning the creation and nature of the Bible. What is the Bible? What is the relationship between the two covenants? How does the synoptic problem affect interpretation? These questions and more are answered in a systematic and holistic fashion. Part two shows the development of the canon within the inner-workings of the early church. By the time of Jesus, an established Old Testament canon existed and the new functioned soon after the death of the apostles. Heresy, persecution, missionary usage and other factors drove the early church into recognizing and codifying a New Testament canon.The third portion of the book spent considerable time discussing the transmission of the Bible. Where did the Greek and Hebrew texts come from and how reliable are they? What manuscripts do we have and what are their dates? What communities developed the text and for what purpose were they created? After offering a lengthy dialogue on each testament, the other shows the value of translations of the Bible in different languages. The author also offers broad principles relating to textual criticism. Part four is the shortest division within the book and seeks to educate the reader about other translations floating around the Roman world in the centuries following the time of the apostles. The author gives special care to informing one of the historical context behind the early printing of the Bible. Because of the Renaissance and the invention of the printing press, the need for a Bible in English was apparent and almost inevitable. Gutenberg’s first book printed was Jerome’s Latin Vulgate which began the process of disseminating the Bible throughout the West.The last section of the book is on English translations of the Bible. The author breaks this section up into smaller subunits based upon the time period: English Bibles prior to 1611, modern English Bibles up to 1950, and modern translations from 1950. In light of the cultural and literary significance of the authorized version of the Bible, the writer devotes a whole chapter to its history and revisions. A special appendix is tacked onto the chapter discussing the unfortunate “KJV Only” debate in the Church today. The work closes answering the question of “Why are there so many English translations?”Dr. Wegner remarks, “The purpose of the book is to provide a general survey of how the Bible we use came to be in its present form.” In my opinion, the author met his goal and much more. Within the span of only four hundred pages, the author indeed offered a lot of valuable information about the Bibles we cherish in our churches today. The value of the book is threefold: education, defense, and encouragement. Wegner’s book obviously educates the average Christian sitting in the pew on how we got our Bibles. Because pastors are mainly focused on teaching and preaching from the text and not necessarily discussing its integrity and textual history, this book offers the laymen a plethora of arrows in their intellectual quiver. The section alone of the various modern translations is worth the price of the book. There are good reasons why some preach from one translation as opposed to another. The book also serves an apologetic purpose. Snide and clever witticisms about the text from disbelieving dissenters can be rebuffed with the knowledge gleaned from Wegner’s book. The transmission of the Bible is a more sophisticated, tedious, and careful process than any analogy from the telephone game can provide. Lastly, the book bolsters our confidence in the Bible. The author shows that great trouble was taken in the transmission and translation process in such a way that the average reader can be sure that the text is accurate and worthy of their spiritual studiousness.I perceived at least three important strengths of the book. First, the text is comprehensive in its scope. Almost no stone was left unturned. While more could be said on each and every subject mentioned, I did not feel the author short-changed the reader in any area. One can walk away with at least sufficient knowledge on these issues. Second, the book was both readable yet scholarly. The author did not write using unclear and difficult concepts without taking the time to explain and define the words. Many books of this caliber tend to go over the heads of the readers. This work avoided such a trap while remaining scholarly. Dr. Wegner wrote in his preface that “The discussions in this book are directed primarily toward the undergraduate student or layperson…” and remained true to form throughout. Last, the book contained many charts, maps, figures and graphs that further elucidated and extended the work’s intended aim. It is one thing to read a lengthy chapter about a manuscript. It is another thing to see the various manuscripts discussed. One walks away with a greater appreciation for the text by getting to see the manuscripts and textual variants within them. This allowed the author to include more information without having to stop the flow of his argument.There are not many apparent weaknesses I could perceive from the book. I do however think the work could have been strengthened with some extra chapters or appendixes on what the major confessions and creeds say about Scripture and also a chapter on the importance of the Bible in the Global South. Though the book was not mainly a theological treatise seeking to discuss such issues as the inerrancy, sufficiency, and perspicuity of Scripture, something brief on those topics might lend the book broader appeal in evangelicalism. Also, the shape of global Christianity has radically changed within the last century and a nod at how the Bible is valued and utilized in non-Western locales would greatly strengthen the book. How is the Bible used in those contexts? Is it different from our own? All in all, an author cannot say everything so should not be faulted for leaving out such things as long as he or she is comprehensive. From my perspective, there was no bias that hindered the author’s work. At times, the author in fact appeared to be neutral and objective as he described various debates surrounding the text. For example, when discussing the KJV Only debate, he merely gave the arguments without his position. The arguments can speak for themselves.I personally look forward to utilizing the information gleaned from this book in the local Church. There exists widespread ignorance on how we got our bibles and the science of textual criticism. Many times, Christians do not even care to learn about these topics until pushed by unbelievers in these specific areas. Educating our youth and others who sit in the pew can only encourage the faithful in their mission to the world. Without an adequate defense of Scripture, the Church’s message many times can and will be dismissed out of hand by the person we are evangelizing. Furthermore, Dr. Wegner’s “For Further Reading” portions after each chapter are an invaluable tool for lay-level apologists and seekers wanting more knowledge. I would and plan to recommend this book for anyone genuinely interested in the history of God’s Word.

I bought this for my dad who, at 70 y/o, is exploring the post-KJV translations. When it arrived, I spent more than an hour reading section 5 on the English translations and loved it. I do wish it were a bit more up-to-date to include information on the HCSB and the recent changes to the NIV following the change in publishers, but it was copyrighted in 1999 before those translations were released. It covers up to the NLT and The Message. Perhaps the paperback version has been updated.I have not spent much time on the beginning of this book (I don't want to give dad an overly used gift) and I don't know what "doctrinal polemics" are, but I suspect that's a bit more than my dad would be looking for. I will say that we (Dad and I) agree with the doctrine to which Moody Bible Institute (the school at which the author teaches) adheres.I'm glad I found a copy that fit my budget to go along with the parallel Bible I bought Dad. I would definitely recommend this to a friend. Just remember it's age (shouldn't affect the main portion of the book) and if you're sensitive to viewpoints other than your own, be aware of the author's background.

Had been searching for just such a book. Not difficult reading for college level. Very good section on the Apocrypha, with lists and charts. I LOVE lists! Even lists the reasons why the various apocryphal writings were not accepted as canon by most. This is a great book. I was looking for a book as an "Honors" extra, to read for The Theology Program at [...]. This is an easy and exciting book to read that follows right along with our 10 week semester on Bibliology and Hermeneutics. It has provided extra insight for understanding and discussion of "How do we know that we have the right Bible? How can my 1988 NIV Bible be the same as 400 BC Old Testament? 100 AD New Testament? I had little knowledge of this subject before this semester and this book was very helpful, yet not "Over my head."

In college, I majored in environmental science with a really large amount of public health thrown in on the side. I studied numerous diseases, from plague, to malaria to Legionnaire's disease. There were a god number of "plagues" in this book that I had never heard of, let alone studied.The author goes back to ancient Roman times and moves her way to the (almost) present day. I was disappointed that there were some disease not covered, but in the epilogue she indicated that she wanted to cover diseases that had been "conquered" so she left a lot of things out…like malaria, yellow fever, etc. She did, however, cover an interesting assortment of diseases which are either still in the back ground to this day (plague) or have been all but eradicated from the face of the earth.The author writes with a witty style, which at first turned me off, but as I thought about it, most people wouldn't have been able to handle all of the death and disease presented without an occasional laugh. And she is humorous at just the right times.The message from the book is that if we study how we screwed up in the past, maybe we will handle disease differently in the future, and believe me, there are diseases lurking around the corner that you have never dreamed of, let alone heard about. Zika maybe bad, but is nothing next to some of the other diseases lurking in the shadows.I recommend the book as a wonderful look at diseases from the past in a short ( and not too boring) way. It is informative and humorous…overall an excellent read!

LOVE. I shouldn't have laughed so much reading a book about plagues! Ms Wright's style won't be for everyone, but it's a great read for anyone who wants to learn about how ridiculous and heroic people can be. Her style is colloquial and approachable. We need more author's that cascasn bring levity to nonfiction. I see her books as a great starting point to explore a topic and then find further information on the events or subjects that interest you.

I had no idea the Spanish influenza started here in America! I learned a lot from the book, but I also love the way Jennifer Wright writes! The book has moments that can pull at your heartstrings (the polio chapter) and at other times make you so angry with your fellow humans (Woodrow Wilson really was the worst!).I highly recommend this book to anyone! Get it for the historian or hypochondriac in your life... hell, honestly its the perfect Christmas present for anyone you know who likes to read!

This starts out strong with its description of the Antoine plague and its societal effects. This is where the book is strongest: describing a disease on an individual level in colorful prose, then describing the disease on a societal level. Where the book gets weaker is in the later chapters, where the author focuses more on particular individuals. So for Typhoid, we learn a lot about Typhoid Mary, but not a lot about what Typhoid does to a person or how widespread or devastating it really was.

This was an interesting book about the worst plagues in history, but it was presented with humor as well as historical fact. This was not an all-inclusive review of diseases that have plagued humans, but it covered the most well-known. Beginning in Roman times to the current day, the author covered the interesting diseases and how the deaths of the population were dealt with. It is interesting to note the treatments of the times as well. The author seems to be an aficionado of Game of Thrones, which she injected into the writing. It was also like listening to John Oliver's discussion of events and comparing them to common occurrences. Highly recommended!

This was an interesting book. It was funny and conversational. It was more of what I would expect from a blog than a book. I don't really have any problems with that, it just isn't what I normally go for. I did learn some new things, and I did laugh a bit though. This book is for light reading. It isn't for people who are into dry history books with no commentary.

I love this book. I work in the medical field, and have a hankering for history, so plagues throughout time definitely hits the spot for me. Jennifer Wright is both highly intelligent and sarcastic, providing factual references mixed with witty remarks. I highly recommend this book, I can't wait to read her others!

The author is skilled in providing just enough medical detail about the disease but also stories that highlight real cases. This did not disappoint.

The author has an extremely dull way of laying out information for the reader. A lot of the text just seemed dated. Author discusses old HTML tricks and tables and other information that just won't get you anywhere in web design / development nowadays. The author really should revise out older junk that is null in contemporary web design. Further, pictures within the eBook are black and white yet the author tries to have a discussion about color and design with these crap black and white photos. There were maybe two useful chapters that I read one covered how to create a checklist for clients before beginning a project and the other covered how to compress photos for the web. Best two chapters and only two worth reading, however even this doesn't justify the waste of money, when I could have looked up this information straight of Google faster than reading it from this archaic text.

This book helped me a lot when I first was learning about using CSS instead of tables to design websites, but unless you find this book in your local library or something, I don't think it's worth buying it now and certainly not at the $30+ it's listed for because it's simply outdated. It still has many examples of using tables to create websites which nobody uses any more. The templates tht come with it are outdated too and made for the older monitors with very little resolution. I could go on, but you get the picture.

Calling this book "professional" in any sense of the word is ridiculous. It is, number one, outdated, with a lot of material on structuring a web page using tables, which has been deprecated for years. I mean, there are people who still do it, but why would anyone teach it? It is outdated and makes for poor websites with a lot of unnecessary overhead.The templates are neither useful in the structural sense nor are they artistically adequate. I would not publish a webpage using any of them -- the design skill level is simply below the level I consider acceptable.I spent a bunch of money on this thing and was excited when it arrived. After browsing it for ten or fifteen minutes, I threw it on the floor in disgust. A complete waste of money. You can really learn web design much better by simply searching for tutorials on the internet, and you can get better templates online for free. Or once you learn how to use HTML and CSS correctly (which this book will not teach you) you can make your own structural templates better than the ones in the book.As far as the design aspect -- well, pure design has such a heavy artistic element to it, it is difficult to teach. But just looking at the hundreds of not-particularly-attractive templates in this book, you can be assured that you aren't going to learn anything startling or "professional" about web design.An absolute waste of money. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

This book was well written. Even though I have been a graphic web designer for several years, I still have some knowledge that I don't know. I am happy to read new thoughts and study new technology from this book.

While this is worthwhile for novices, there are times when you need templates for some web projects.In this book the authors has given you over 200 HTML templates, which are on the cd-rom, to work with. Sex and the Single Girl is written in a Bible study format, and I think it would be great to do with a group of close Christian girl friends.I look forward to reading more by Juli Slattery.

If you want to actually understand and apply sexuality as a woman who loved the Lord- this study is for you. I LOVED it. Love the workbook feel- the layout is simple, short, and straight to the point. I wish I went through this in college with all my friends.

I was intrigued by the title so I grabbed this book while it was on sale. I loved reading this the past 6 weeks. I think what I loved most about this was the way she explained how to deal with gray areas. I highly recommend this to anyone who is single and maybe a little confused about what is "okay".

I'm currently on week 5 of the 6 week study and I can honestly say this book has been so good to read. Growing up in church all anyone would say as far as sex goes is that you shouldn't do it unless you're married. Growing up in this society where sex is so ruling of TV, film, books, etc. it was a struggle for me growing up and I didn't have anybody to confide in. This book has already answered my questions and more! I am very happy to have found it and will be passing it on to my teenage sister once I have finished reading it.

Its a great book which has been brilliantly reproduced with wonderful illustration. Go get a copy to experience it!

I got through this in less than an hour. If it was a book on the same topic it would have taken considerably longer.Thankfully, I do know something on this topic. It makes it easier to spot the mistakes and lies by omission. For instance, Che's concern over the executions he presided over following the fall of Havana. The author portrays Che as being concerned that revolutionary justice not get out of hand. Laughable! Hundreds died in front of firing squads commanded by Che. "Revolutionary justice" was handed out rather haphazardly to anyone associated with the Batista regime, presided over by a man who supposedly took the hippocratic oath.On the other hand, it did inadvertantly portray Che's role as a troublemaker, more than a "revolutionary." By Lenin, he was intent on starting revolutions in Africa and South America whether the people living there wanted them or not! It is no surprise to me that he ended up getting all of his people killed and he died alone. Not to mention accidentally shooting himself when the Bay of Pigs invasion started!So, the story of a failed doctor, a failed soldier and a failed father. Too bad such great artwork had to be wasted on such a loser.
