This book is my favorite on general relativity. I absolutely enjoyed the printed first edition. The exposition is wonderfully clear and encompassing. However, the Kindle edition is, frankly, plain horrible. The equations appear ridiculously small (initially I thought they were all missing, without exaggeration!), and since they turn out to be extremely low resolution images, zooming (which is itself tedious and distracting, given the amount and depth of technical contents) does not help due to pixelization, particularly when one tries to distinguish subtle but essential details in the omnipresent covariant and contravariant tensor indices. It pains me that, as a textbook, the Kindle edition (as of June 2017) is thus worthless. This work deserved better.

This book had 4.5 stars when I bought it and was very excited for it, but it turned out to be just eh. The content this book tries to convey is what is in my opinion the strong suit. I liked how the math was presented, and got a general feel for things. But it does not present some topics in a lucid manner, and sometimes leaves important results in a mess of random calculuations, the problem being you won't even know whats important or not if you're a beginner. Example: the friedmann equations for cosmological evolution are never even given a name. They're just there. The book basically spits all this stuff at you with no motivation whatsoever. This book also lacks figures, sometimes the way schutz tries to describe things are impossible to understand, where a simple diagram would make things infinitely easier. The book omits many steps I found important in derivations as well, and after reading a chapter you'll often get the feeling like you haven't learned anything.There are good things about this book though. Its got pretty good descriptions of the math. It let me get a feel for diff geometry in a reasonable amount of time, which I would say is pretty impressive.I would recommend the book by hartle for physical intuition and lucid motivations and derivations. But yeah, hopefully with Robert Scott's students manual this book will be nicer to work with. DEFINATELY not for self study, don't even try.Just so you guys know. I don't hate this book as much as I hated, for example, kittels solid state book. That thing was just an abomination. And its definitely not on griffiths e&m level. But somewhere in between. I would say its leaning more towards griffiths, and that said its not an awful book, but its just a shame cause it could be SO much better with some work. Oh, forgot to mention. TYPOS galore./end rant

The book is good for a first course as the title suggests. However, the Kindle edition (the product I am reviewing) is absymmal. Equations do not show up properly and you have to click and enlarge them in a popup every time. Sometimes entire pages show up blank and only become visible when you change the text size. My advice for you would be to save your money for the print version.

I struggled through this book more than I was okay with while learning GR. Originally, I thought it was that difficult of a topic. But upon learning much more about GR and having much more experience, I still find this book to be a cumbersome read. The author never decides if he wants to use modern coordinate free notation or old school component only notation. He constantly swaps back and forth and only ever half develops anything from modern notation. It left me VERY confused when first learning this topic. Upon coming back to check it out recently, I now understand why. He does an extremely poor job of developing the notations together and, much more often than not, he leaves you confused.When the author teaches and strictly stays with old school notation, the book does a fantastic job. But when he tries to incorporate modern notation, it's confusing.After finding the book "A Student's Guide to Vectors and Tensors," I find that this book is rather mediocre. Fleisch did a drastically better job at teaching you everything up to the Riemann tensor. It's not even comparable. If I were suggesting a path to learn GR, I would say Fleisch, Zee, Carroll, Wald.

This book is a good introduction to relativity which does not pull punches mathematically speaking but still manages to be merciful to the beginner. I read this book with only a basic background in freshman college physics and calculus. It took me 2 6-month sessions over 2 years to go through it all in detail but it was worth it. It gave me a sufficient familiarity with the core concepts and underlying mathematics to consider tackling a more advanced book on relativity someday. The book starts with special relativity, Minkowski diagrams, 4-vectors, etc., then progresses through background material on tensors, one-forms, metrics, etc. It then goes over general covariance, geodesics in curved spacetime, and the equations of general relativity. Following this there is material on the weak gravity (Newtonian) approximation, including the derivation of the precession of Mercury, a key confirmation of Einstein's theory. Then various metrics relevant to cosmology and black holes are discussed, including the Friedmann-Lemaitre metric (the expanding universe), and the Kerr metric (rotating black holes). It was quite fascinating to see the actual mathematical derivations of many of the key concepts and findings of general relativity that I had previously only read about in popular science books. Each chapter comes with problems which help illuminate the material.A very worthwhile exercise if non-mathematical descriptions of relativity, cosmology, and high-energy astrophysics leave you wishing for a more in-depth understanding, and if you have a basic physics and math background and the time to spend. Five stars!

Friedman's work is always provocative with a cautionary tone followed by an optimistic outlook. Although this as well as his previous books are somewhat dated (this one doesn't take into account the recent natural gas boom created by fracking), the general message remains as true and pertinent today as when it was written (since our politicians don't have the courage to overcome the lobbyists of the wealthy and enact these long term policies). The book really could be about 2/3 the length as Friedman does have a tendency to continue to hammer well established concepts over and over to emphasize his points but you can see this coming and skip ahead fairly easy. If you don't want to commit to the whole book you should at least read the story about First Solar in the latter part of the book. That says a lot about the power of the elite pulling us in the wrong direction.

By and large, the thesis of Thomas Friedman's new book, "Hot, Flat and Crowded" is correct. That is, the world is getting hotter, the world is getting "flatter" as globalisation erodes many of the differences between national economies and, of course, the world is becoming more crowded. We could argue the degree to which each of these phenomena is a problem but it is hard to argue that they are not occurring.Having set the scene, Friedman then launches into a solution which involves a greening of the world. And this should occur not just in the USA and other industrialised countries but must reach into China and the newly developing world. Again, hard to argue here. However, I feel that the means that he proposes this greening is somewhat wishy washy. Greening will require significant market reforms. The world will need a carbon tax at least; more likely, there will be a need to develop a full carbon trading system. But herein lies the problem. The US has already rejected "cap and trade". Not a great start. Here in Australia where this reviewer resides, there is a fierce debate at present as to the need for any intervention at all. The government seems to be losing popularity by the day as it pushes a market based agenda. This is a shame. Hard choices need to be made.In spite of my reservations, I enjoyed Friedman's book. He is a fine journalist at the top of his craft. His influence is significant and he has a loyal fan base. I only wish that he could be more hard headed. We are facing a serious challenge at the global level. This will require severe medicine. Friedman could have produced a better book by recognising this fact with greater determination.

I read and reviewed Friedman's earlier book "The World is Flat," which I enjoyed very much. I like "Hot, Flat and Crowded" even better.The thesis of the book is that the world has major challenges, as does the United States, and that it would be best for the United States, and for the world, if the United States played a primary role in figuring out how to deal with these challenges, which include, of course, global warming, excessive/inefficient use of sources of energy, deforestation, and problems with safe drinking water.America got off track under Reaganism, which taught us that government is generally wrong, while private enterprise is more likely right. But what we found out was that what was good for General Motors (short-term) was not always good for the United States. "George W. Bush came into office bound and determined not to ask the American people to do anything hard when it came to energy," says Friedman. And, quoting a poet: "The trouble with our times is that the future is not what it used to be." And, from Friedman: "Our young people are so much more idealistic than we deserve them to be."He warns us that we had "better understand this new era we're heading into." As for "crowded," he says that in 1800, the most populated city was London at one million. Today, there are more than 300 cities of one million or more. And, the world's current total population is about 6.5 billion, with a projection of about nine billion by 2050. As for "flat," the potential bad news is that more and more countries feel entitled to live the "American Dream," which may lead to an impossible demand for dwindling energy supplies. And, as for "hot," he tells us that global warming in for real, but that we humans continue to increase the amounts of carbon dioxide we are sending into the atmosphere.When flat successfully meets crowded, another part of the world moves toward for the "American Dream." "We invented that system. We exported it. Others are entitled to it every bit as much as we are," he says, adding "To tell people they cannot grow is to tell them they have to remain poor forever." As an example, China is on course to have 130 million cars by 2050. And, in India, there are already gated suburban communities with golf courses, big homes and all the other amenities.Currently, of course, Americans are by far the biggest energy hogs, consuming 9-to-30 times more energy than average folks in China or India now consume. And we are doing relatively little to curb our addiction to oil. We send hundreds of billions of dollars per year to Arab states for the stuff. Going green, per Freidman, "is now a national security imperative." And, per Friedman, Al Gore owes us an apology for his effort to alert the world about climate change and global warming. He underestimated the importance of his message.Today, says Friedman, we have three varieties of those who deny global warming: First, those who draw a paycheck from companies with a vested interest in the status-quo; second, a small group of scientists who really believe that global warming is not true; and, third, those who see the issue mainly in political terms, hating government intervention and controls more than any possibility of global warming being for real.So, where are we today? China is building another polluting coal-fired power plant every week. Forests are disappearing as we speak. Safe drinking water is a scarcity in many parts of the world. Twenty-five percent of the world's population has little access to electricity. And approximately 2.5 billion of the world's 6.5 billion people earn less than $2 per day.Per Friedman, "Our environmental savings account is empty....It is pay now, or there will be no later....In a flat world, everyone can see what everyone else is doing, and the harm it is causing."But there is hope. "The green economy is posed to be the mother of all markets," he says. "And the world is waiting for America to lead in this energy-climate issue." From the Japanese comes the Prius, which Friedman says" is not a better car. It's a better system." He adds, "We need many more people, companies, and universities trying many more things." We need "breakthrough innovation." But he says "real energy innovation is hard....We are not going to regulate our way out....we can only innovate our way out....We need 10,000 innovators, all collaborating with, and building upon, one another to produce all sorts of breakthroughs in abundant, clean, reliable, and cheap electrons and energy efficiency....Bottom line: America needs an energy technology bubble just like the information technology bubble." But Friedman knows that China is also a major player, saying "As China goes, so goes Mother Earth."Ending the book, Friedman calls himself a "sober optimist," saying that we are all "Pilgrims again." "But if we rise to the challenge....we, and the world, will not only survive, but thrive, in an age that is hot, flat and crowded."

This book is amazing and a must use for someone going to take the Asvab. When I took it, I wanted to excel and this book helped me get to the 80th percentile. You will need to study but i promise it will be worth it, helped me score high enough even for OCS. Highly recommend!!

My son loves this book. He read every page front to back and scored well over a 60 just on the practice asvab. He is excited to take the real thing in a few weeks.

A friend recommended these Brighter Cards. I ordered several different card sets (shapes, letters, numbers, words, etc) and have been working them with my 2 year old. He likes the cards and the colors/ pictures on them. He also enjoys putting each card back in the box after we're done with it.All in all I think these are a good learning tool. And I love the low price!!!!My only complaint is that the cards are a bit on the thin side.....and when considering that toddlers will be handeling them, they should be thicker to ensure durability and longevity.

I'm using these cards with my 3 1/2 year old who is starting to learn to read. There are 54 cards, with the letter(s) on the front and a picture that goes along with how to pronounce them and on the back are additional example words that use the same phonic rule. The blends are very helpful when learning to piece together words in order to read them more quickly, but some of these cards included in this deck are single letter phonics that would do better as part of an alphabet deck, like pronunciation of consonants "D" and "S." There's also only one pronunciation of "Y" (which actually has four pronunciations). I was hoping for more consonant and vowel blends, endings, or prefixes to help with more complex pronunciation (oa, wh, ew, ay, un, ed, ing, tion, eigh) than what is included in this set. The single letter cards seem redundant if your child already knows the alphabet sounds. Still there are a number of cards that are helpful while trying learn some phonics that we will end up pulling out to use as our main deck.It would have been helpful to know which cards were in this deck before purchasing it, so I've included them here. Here are the letters included in this set:A (short), A (long), B, bl, br, C (hard), C (soft), ch, cl, cr, D, dr, E (short), E (long), F, fl, fr, G (hard), G (soft), gl, gr, H, I (short), I (long), J, K, L, M, N, O (short), O (long), oo, P, qu, R, S, sh, sl, sn, sp, st, sw, T, th, tr, U (short), U (long), V, W, X, Y, Z

I wish they were laminated on both sides but really good cards. My daughter will love them.

Quality is good. But the problem I have is showing sounds like 'sn' and 'Ss'. My daughter is looking for 'Ss' as the 's' sound and it's confusing. It would have been better if the cards were in small caps on one side and large cap on the other.

We started with these and moved into word family flash cards and my son was sounding out words and reading simple sentences after two weeks. He's a very active little boy so we made it into a competition to see how fast we could go through the deck and he loves it! He is always trying to beat his previous time :)

These are additional phonics cards that I use with my Speech Therapy clients. They are also good as additional reinforcement of initial sounds in words for my aphasic clients. There are basically 44 sounds in Standard American English to consider but these A to Z cards are there as "filler phonics training" and to increase phonological awareness. My clients are adults and I have never had any complaints regarding my cards being "childish". I use whatever I can to help my clients speak, read etc. Good price point.

Great educational tool for both my 4 year old niece and 3 year old nephew! Haven't done the lower case alphabet yet, so that was very confusing to them to see on the cards. All in all, a great tool!

PHONICS --- This seems to be an area which MAY ???? be glossed over in some study environments, or maybe it is only that peoples from various different cultures have such a wide variety of sounds from their first languages tongues, but MANY seem to have serious problems transferring from their first tongues to being able to sound out multi languages in more perfectly sounding ways, so we purchased this book for some of Our Families and Friends to help them with their goals to perfect sounds of their multi tongues more efficiently, and Flash Cards are also a great INTERACTIVE way for families and friends to help one another in a fun way, even at parties, they can make a fun activity and still be honing in on good practice for the multi=tongues they are trying to master better. So, Thank you, Amazon, for your wide selections. Blessings.

Every combination of cards my 2nd grader needed, less than half the price of local educational kid stores locally, plus no hassle at the malls and no missed time with work or family. 90% of what we need for our large family can be dropped at your door, and the prices are even better when you consider the time that is saved which translates into more money since time=money. Interesting analysis of the topic - not much different from any synopsis found on the internet - not worth the price

This is a very interesting book. Just because you did not grow up exposed to lead paint does not mean your health has not been effected by the environment. You will be surprised by everything that does have a daily effect on your health. It reminds us sometimes you need to think outside the box in order to maintain your good health. Well written. I am sure that you will learn from this book. Enjoy!

Some good information, basic tho, Read it in one sitting and the comparison between synthetic and natural was mote then helpful , now just need to find a more in depth book with a good protocol

Should not be categorized as a book... this could barely be called an article. Disappointed that it's marketed in such a way.
