This was a gift to help complete a set. It was exactly what I needed.

All of these little house books are great to read to little ones in your family

A very good book. It gives the reader a perspective of how life was like back then for Caroline Ingalls as a girl. Ma in the Little House Series by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

My children love these books!!

Good story

Although these books can't be compared to Laura's writing, they are still pretty good. This is where Caroline first meets Charles.

this is a very good book to add to my collection of little house books about laura ingalls wilder and her family

This is the fifth book in the Little House books Caroline series. As with the others this fifth book was better than the first due to already knowing the characters and being able to just enjoy the storyline and being 'there in the moment' with them. A simple but heartwarming easy read, perfect to help drift your mind into another time and place before you have to go to bed. Love these books! In this book Caroline is a little older so this story does have a bit more 'story' to it. The school teacher comes and boards with them and through her gentle teachings that Caroline realizes the importance of school work and what teaching children. And thus wants to be a school teacher herself one day. Also in this book we (reader) is introduced to the Ingalls family. Charlie and his fiddle are introduced to Caroline and her brother in the woods as he is practicing his music. Then later on the two families, since they are the closest neighbors have fun times together. When I saw where the later books in the Caroline series was written by a different author than the first few books I was dreading reading them since I had gotten to know the way the first author writes etc. But if you didn't pay attention you would never know a different one wrote these. It was wonderfully done

No lyrics, and the arrangements are strange. Even our piano instructor from the Moscow Conservatory said they were odd and didn't sound true to the original. It may be perfect for some, but not at all for us.

The Sound of Music will always live on in our hearts and homes as well as in performances. This book is well suited for it all. A singer, a musician, or just anyone wanting to revisit this wonderful music. The book is "meaty" without being unduly hard so it is enjoyable from the very start. It is not for a beginner piano student. The student must be in the intermediate stage of lessons before using this book. I enjoy pulling this book out and just playing it myself and others like to sing a long with me!

Really great arrangements for piano!! If your looking for just a sing a long piano areangement you should look somewhere else. This is a piano solo book. The arranger did a really nice job in using different rhythms and dynamics to mimic different voices and instruments. Also this is a medium to advanced book, so not for the first time pianists unless you're willing to work really hard

Item is as advertised.

This is confusing. This piano solo selections do not have lyrics. I wanted lyrics to go with piano accompaniment. I ended up returning this.

This is absolutely what I have been looking for! I grew up watching the Sound of Music and have recently begun taking piano lessons. I love that this book is spiral bound--keeps me from having to bend the covers to make the book stay open. Let's get ready for some "Do-Re-Mi"!!!!

Enjoyable

The classic musical, as presented on the Broadway stage. Perfect!

Review

"Not only about medical travails and emergencies, but also stories of friendship formed with steadfast people, children lost and found, farm animals that wander a little too far, and rumors of a ghostly apparition whispering a hidden secret. Extraordinary, heartwarming, and at times a little bit tragic, Nurse, Come You Here! captures the essence of a rugged, close-knit rural community."—The Biography ShelfPraise for Call the Nurse"Julia MacLeod shares unique and enchanting experiences as a nurse in rural Scotland. Her stories will ring true with every nurse—or anyone—who has ever cared for a family or a community, whether in Scotland or America. Call the Nurse is a delightful read.”—LeAnn Thieman, author Chicken Soup for the Nurse's Soul"Cozy and chatty . . . A lovely account of ordinary people thriving in an extraordinary landscape."—Kirkus Reviews"The book feels like a letter from a friend who has an eye for travel writing. . . . With a nurse's no-nonsense manner, MacLeod relays tales of adventure, finding humor and humanity in her experiences. . . . For James Herriot fans, without the animals."—Booklist"MacLeod proves to be an engaging narrative writer who uses humor and vernacular to her advantage. Should be of interest not only to medical professionals but to all readers who want to escape to a slower way of life."—Library Journal"This lively and heartening memoir evokes both the hardships and the humour of island life."—The Scotsman"This charming, bracing reminiscence of life on a remote Hebridean island captures a vanishing world filled with memorable stories and characters. . . . Mary J. MacLeod makes you care, moves you, amuses you, shocks you, teaches you: This is a surprising, satisfying memoir."—Floyd Skloot, author of In the Shadow of Memory and The Wink of the Zenith: The Shaping of a Writer's Life"Call the Midwife gave [us] . . . the nursing profession in 1950s London. Now, a retired district nurse [gives us] the heartwarming and humorous—yet often shocking—events on a remote Scottish island."—Sunday Post, UK"A charming tale, packed full with reminiscences, rather in the manner of the recent hit TV series, Call the Midwife. . . . Her tales of joy, trouble, drama, and comedy are warm and humorous, telling of a bygone era."—Westcountry Life, Western Morning News, UK"Julia MacLeod has written a book which encapsulates Hebridean life during some decades past . . . with a sensitivity that reflects her nursing career."—Lady Claire Macdonald of Macdonald, from her foreword

I enjoyed MacLeod’s first book “Call the Nurse” about her life as a nurse on the Island of Papavray in the Scottish Hebrides. So, I decided to read the sequel. I must say that I enjoyed the first book more than the second. The first part of the book is about life and nursing on Papavray. The second part is about the family following her husband as his work took them to Nevada, California and England. The book is well written and the famous Scottish humor is prevalent in the story. MacLeod presents various short stories about people she cared for. I found it interesting to learn about the state of medical and nursing care in the 1960s. MacLeod reveals the cultural shock the family felt going from the Hebrides Island to Nevada and California and from Scottish culture to American Culture. Overall the book made of a delightful, easy read.I read this as an e-book via my Kindle app for the iPad. The book is 320 pages long.

This is the 2nd book from Mary MacLeod in which she relates stories of her time as a nurse on a Scottish Island. This one is just as good as the first. Really wonderful stories of the people who lived on this island. Also about their diverse ways and the many problems they faced. She also tells of her time of living in America. Her husband's work took her to the west coast and she found it far different than the small island in Scotland. The stories are well told with usually humorous anecdotes. The places and and names are fictionalized but the stories are true. If you like this genre of reading then you will love her two books about her days on this Scottish Island.

This is a moving set of incidents in the life of a nurse in the isolated Hebrides. I read this second installment without having written the first volume. All of the autobiographical incidents are interesting and several very moving. There is a twist in the set when the writer is transferred to Nevada and California by remaining with her husband and his far flung occupations. This last quarter of the book is a contrast with the limited horizons of the Hebrides! And it serves as an Engish woman's view of far southwestern America. Life on an island in the Hebrides with its long tradition of quaint habits was a contrast with the author's previous experience in England and we are carried along for the ride. Then when she somewhat suddenly finds herself on Nevada we are doubly jolted by culture shock. The author is kind in her assessments of people in both places. I really enjoyed my sojourn in the Hebrides and read one long story outloud to some visitors. The part about the U. S. was humorous as I watched the author adjust. I think she would find other parts of the country as different from Nevada and California as the Hebrides are from England. I should add that the time period is the 1970s.

I began this book reluctantly because I never fully warmed to the first one. Indeed, the book plods along like the last one did, until suddenly we’re in Nevada. The scene change was as jarring as the fault lines and earthquakes she mentions. After spending a book and a half talking about their life in the Hebrides, she doesn’t tell us anything about their decision to leave the islands, let alone say goodbye to her beloved islanders. Why not finish the story about the Hebrides and save their American adventures for another book?

Ms. McLeod continues her life's story in this fascinating book, beginning in the Hebrides Islands & concluding with leaving California. Again she weaves her story around the interesting & colorful characters she meets & the beauty & struggles in the different climates where she lives. Her books are laced with fun humor in her everyday life situations and her refreshing love of life shines in these true stories. How I wish there was a book #3! Thank you, Ms. McLeod, for sharing your adventures & your most fascinating life with us!

I like this book a lot, but her other one is my most favorite because it has more dealings with the local people and their customs. As wonderful and facinating as she has the locals of Scotland are, I wonder about the high level of mental illness and alcoholism that seems to come hand in hand with living in such difficult (poor) circumstances and such terribly harsh weather. She may patch them up as a Nurse, but I am doubtful there is much recovery from the over drinking and other chronic problems she encounters. I noticed she thought the amount of arthritis she encountered had to do with the weather in Scotland -- scientifically of course this could not be true. She also lived in Africa and other locations and I hope she writes about them too!

I bought this book and then regretted I did not have her first book. So I borrowed that one from the library using Overdrive. and had no problem whatsoever to finish reading it within the 3 weeks allowed., Her books are books one will remember and treasure for a long time. As a nurse she got to know most people on the island her family lived and on some of the other islands. People learned to make do and were always ready to help. Yes, they also wanted to know everything but it is like one big family. She gets you into the island life right from the start and had also a great appreciation for the beauty of the island, despite at times the nasty weather. .

If you liked the first one you will like this one. Its the continuing adventures of a nurse on a small island in the Hebrides. the stories are poignant and sweet just like the first one. Its the kind of book you want snuggle up with under a warm blanket on a cold winters night. that said it is a little different from the first one because she leaves her small island to come to the states due to her husbands job. Thus you also get the opinion of Scott on life in America. I greatly enjoyed both books but fear our intrepid author is out of stories which is a shame as these were enjoyable reads. If you like Call the Midwife on PBS you will enjoy these two books.

Well, as I'm undergoing through a course of programming, I bought this book to help me understand better. This book is full of details about the swift programming language. I shared this book with my professor and he was able to guide me properly with this. This guide teaches some advanced level of Object Oriented Programming, to use data and codes, effects and outputs etc.I find this book helpful but it's not truly a beginner's guide. If it's used as a reference guide or so, it's worth it. The way the book has been written and formatted, it's scares a beginner like me! As I'm not an expert so I can't tell in-depth details or errors (if any) of this book but so far, it's been helpful and very informative!

Pardon me... Which book are you folks reviewing here??I am asking because I have purchased and have read "Swift Programming: Master's Handbook Edition today (July 25, 2015). The book has only 5 chapters and is far from complete. It does promise more (see "Phase Two Content") -- at some unspecified date and time.***What _I liked_ about it***[1] Use of pseudo-code to outline the design logic that is eventually encoded with Swift programming language.[2] Link to swiftstub (http://www.swiftstub.com) -- a web-based application that simulates Swift "playground" and allows readers like me to try Swift in *any* web browser on almost any platform![3] The effort to distinguish between the 'effect' and the 'output' of a function in Chapter 5.***What _I did not like_ about it***[1] In chapter 4 we are encouraged to "define two data definitions" called '1stCoffee' and '2ndCoffee'...". This an inexcusable error. Few, if any, modern, higher level, programming languages allow constant or variable names to begin with digits.[2] The use of capitals in pseudo-code is jarring. With few exceptions, modern programming languages use capital letters in very specific contexts.[3] In pseudo code in Chapter 3, it is not clear why "City" precedes "LosAngeles" in"City LosAngeles = new City"This causes some confusion when subsequently the reader sees"LosAngeles-LATITUDE = 34.0500;" -- The beginner would wonder happened to the 'City" prefix?[4] You can do a better job of explaining the difference between Swift's use of 'let' and 'var' keywords. At the beginning of Swift-03, there is an assertion that "If you declare either an atomic data or a Struct as a 'let' definition, you cannot change the data within it." This assertion is misleading because the value of an attribute declared with the 'var' keyword within a Struct declared as a 'let' can be changed.[5] It is probably not required but it would helpful to a beginner if pseudo-code reflects the structure and style of Swift code. To this end, Swift's function signature *should not be*...(OutputType) functionName(InputType InputName){}Instead, it is more like...AccessType funct functionName(InputName: InputType)-->ReturnDataType{}Explanation:%% 'AccessType' determine function scope and visibility -- e.g., as 'Public', 'Internal', or 'Private'%% the 'funct' keyword is required%% the functionName is required%% 'InputName: InputType' identify function parameters%% the parentheses "()" that follow functionName enclose function parameters.%% '--> ReturnDataType' defines the type of return -- if any.%% curly brackets "{}" contain code for the function's action and, where necessary, the 'return' statement. The returned data must match the ReturnDataType.%% there can be zero or more function parameters.%% multiple function parameters are seperated by commas ","%% function parameters can include a 'Variadic' parameter. If present, the 'varaidic' parameter must be the last function parameter declared.%% a Swift function can have zero or multiple ReturnDataTypes.%% function parameters and ReturnDataTypes can be Swift "primitive" types (e.g., Int, Float/Double, String, Bool) or complex Swift types (e.g., objects derived from Structs or Classes, tuples, enumerations, arrays, dictionaries, etc.)***Suggestions for improvement***[1] The author(s) need to let prospective buyers know, upfront, that the book is a work-in-progress. I was not happy to learn that I hadpurchased an unfinished book. The fact that I "really" like what I see in the book thus far has not changed the sense of "betrayal" that I felt.[2] If e-book formats allow it, consider using different font styles for pseudo-code and actual Swift code. It really helps comprehension and clarity.[3] Find a way to write pseudo-code without so many capital letters.[4] Consider renaming Swift workshops to show which chapter they belong in. "Swift Workshop #1" would become "Swift Workshop #2.1"[5] Actually run *all* code in the book through Swift to identify and explain any errors that [diligent] readers who attempt to replicate sample code within the book might encounter.I rate the book three (3) stars for the reasons I mention above. I will be happy to revise this rating when I see the rest of the book OR if somebody will explain to me why an incomplete book is receiving 5 star reviews. Thank you.

This is a truly awful product. Let me tell you why.First, this is a print-on-demand book. Meaning, it is printed one at a time, when you order it (hence you cannot get a two day Prime delivery, only two BUSINESS days delivery). It also means a poor binding that curls. (see photo).Second, it seems that the book was transferred directly from the Kindle to paper. How so? well, it does not have page numbers. Good luck finding any chapter. It is all printed with the same font, with no graphic design or tables whatsoever. Think a large Word document dumped to the printer as it were.Okay you say, the presentation is bad. What about the content?Well the book is full of typographical, grammatical and material errors. How many? Too many to the point of being distracting. I gave up halfway through and could not finish reading the book. The book is poorly written, and seems to have not gone through any meaningful editing. I also suspect that the author is not a native of the English language. But so are many other authors; this is exactly what editors should be hired for. But, you say, there are praises on the back cover! Well look closely. These are quotes from Amazon reviewers! No offense, but, really?Another proof of how poorly its creators think about this product is the fact that there is no AUTHOR named on the book. I suppose the author had been really embarrassed with the end result they decided to disown this book. As should you.

I purchased this book after reading some of the glowing reviews here. But after seeing it, I have to wonder what in the world those people were thinking.Quite simply, this book is awful. It appears to be just a poorly-formatted Kindle book that was converted to print with no effort to even make it readable. The text font is large, and lines are double-spaced to make the book appear longer. There are section headings orphaned at the bottom of the left page, with the related content beginning on the right. And there are NO page numbers at all!Content-wise, there appears to be nothing here that isn't readily available in any of the many quality Swift tutorials that are available for free online. Please, please save your money and give this book a pass.

Hum This is the very first time I write a review for a book. And I read a lot. I don't know whom can take advantage of this book Totally useless. There is no code examples, the explanations are really tooo simple.Just using the apple documentation is much better. Swift is also not for beginners. The object oriented design is simply not explained (and cannot be explained in a few pages)I really don't like the book I just waist my money.

Review

The unfinished fantasy of New York City, this reminds us all, is of a thousand competing ideas canceling one another out ― with envy, greed, destruction and lethargy ― and arriving half by accident at a complicated compromise that everyone can more or less live with, and even come to love. (Will Heinrich The New York Times)Captivating architectural plans that didn't get built give a glimpse of what the Big Apple could have looked like (Clemence Michallon Daily Mail)Sure, New York has plenty of icons ― the Empire State and Chrysler buildings, the Statue of Liberty, Grand Central Terminal. But as this book makes clear, you could create a pretty good city from the schemes that failed. Flipping through it is like taking a trip to that city. (Fred A. Bernstein Introspective Magazine)...leafing through Never Built New York will keep right on provoking gasps at the sheer, lunatic audacity emblazoned on every page. (Justin Davidson New York Magazine)The best architecture and design books of 2016 (Curbed)a gorgeous tome published by Metropolis Books...Perfect for the urbanist, the New York City-dweller, or really anyone―this book is as historically fascinating as it is visually compelling. (Meg Miller fastcodesign.com)If you believe New York City’s ongoing infestation of sliver towers and chain stores is ruining the town you love, you may find some small cheer in knowing how much worse things could be. Never Built New York provides detailed, copiously illustrated accounts of citywide plans spanning a century - a few intriguing, others fanciful, many examples of outright vandalism - that highlight how technological change commercial exigencies, and architectural vanity could combine to distastefully ill effect. (Albert Mobilio Bookforum)Just as compelling as the extraordinary collections of drawings is the vivid language the authors use to tell the projects’ stories. Goldin and Lubell, whose editorial tone ranges from sarcastic to critical, introduce the reader to the people behind these visionary projects, giving us glimpses of their dreams and obsessions. (Guglielmo Mattioli Arch Daily)the impression one gets from flipping through Never Built New York is one of visionary ambition for a city that’s often remained architecturally conservative, partly due to space limitations and partly because of bureaucratic city planning. (Allison Meier Hyperallergic)a unique look at New York through various historical eras, such as the Gilded Age and the mid-20th century. And yet the concepts covered in Never Built New York don’t seem entirely unfamiliar. Indeed, they reveal a concern for the environment and a preoccupation with space that are still on the minds of New York City residents today. (Katie Hiler Science Friday)

For anyone with an interest in New York City's history, in its architecture or in civil engineering, this is a book to own. It's well illustrated and articulately written. One can only wonder how this City would have been transformed had some of these actually been built.

Never Built New York might be classed as an architecture book, but it's also a bit like science fiction. Imagine a world where the city had decided to fill in the Hudson River, let Buckminster Fuller cover Manhattan with a clear dome, or (worst of all) allowed Frank Gehry to design the Hudson Yards. Some of the projects are mundane, and others are insane, but NBNY shows you all the alternate timelines that could have been and explains why we live in this reality instead of one with a pneumatic subway. The authors do a fantastic job of explaining New York's invisible architectural history in an engaging and accessible way, and since each project is given its own focus, the book is interesting both to flip through and to read cover-to-cover. The book itself is wonderfully designed and produced; I love that there's no dust jacket to worry about, and the renderings, model photos and reproductions are all *so crisp.*Bottom line, I give Never Built New York 5/5 crazy unbuilt towers. Read it and be glad that you don't (yet) live under a dome.

The architects and planners in the family loved this. A big, big hit as Christmas gift. People who just like NYC enjoyed it too. Didn't expect so much "historical" info but it was much appreciated. Just about everybody spent some time with this.

Great book for family that lives in NYC and passes things every day which could have been something totally different. Good coffee table book.

WOW!!! Fascinating look at what might have been (some great ideas, some not-so-great ideas). Get lost in this for a few hours!

I could spend hours with this book. A delightful journey through what could have been through the hundreds of years history of NYC

Great gift for expatriate New Yorkers!

This is an impressive "coffee table book" with fascinating photos, diagrams, and primary sources which cause one to consider "what if..." regarding the development of Manhattan. It was delivered promptly and is being enjoyed by the recipients.
