Review

“One of the most remarkable books I’ve ever read. It’s truly moving, eye-opening, incredibly vivid.”—Jon Stewart, The Daily Show“Please don’t assume that The Reason I Jump is just another book for the crowded autism shelf. . . . This is an intimate book, one that brings readers right into an autistic mind—what it’s like without boundaries of time, why cues and prompts are necessary, and why it’s so impossible to hold someone else’s hand. Of course, there’s a wide range of behavior here; that’s why ‘on the spectrum’ has become such a popular phrase. But by listening to this voice, we can understand its echoes.”—Chicago Tribune (Editor’s Choice)“Amazing times a million.”—Whoopi Goldberg, People“The Reason I Jump is a Rosetta stone. . . . I had to keep reminding myself that the author was a thirteen-year-old boy when he wrote this . . . because the freshness of voice coexists with so much wisdom. This book takes about ninety minutes to read, and it will stretch your vision of what it is to be human.”—Andrew Solomon, The Times (U.K.)“Extraordinary, moving, and jeweled with epiphanies.”—The Boston Globe“Small but profound . . . [Naoki Higashida’s] startling, moving insights offer a rare look inside the autistic mind.”—Parade“Surely one of the most remarkable books yet to be featured in these pages . . . With about one in 88 children identified with an autism spectrum disorder, and family, friends, and educators hungry for information, this inspiring book’s continued success seems inevitable.”—Publishers Weekly  “We have our received ideas, we believe they correspond roughly to the way things are, then a book comes along that simply blows all this so-called knowledge out of the water. This is one of them. . . . An entry into another world.”—Daily Mail (U.K.)“Every page dismantles another preconception about autism. . . . Once you understand how Higashida managed to write this book, you lose your heart to him.”—New Statesman (U.K.)   “Astonishing. The Reason I Jump builds one of the strongest bridges yet constructed between the world of autism and the neurotypical world. . . . There are many more questions I’d like to ask Naoki, but the first words I’d say to him are ‘thank you.’”—The Sunday Times (U.K.)   “This is a guide to what it feels like to be autistic. . . . In Mitchell and Yoshida’s translation, [Higashida] comes across as a thoughtful writer with a lucid simplicity that is both childlike and lyrical. . . . Higashida is living proof of something we should all remember: in every autistic child, however cut off and distant they may outwardly seem, there resides a warm, beating heart.”—Financial Times (U.K.)   “Higashida’s child’s-eye view of autism is as much a winsome work of the imagination as it is a user’s manual for parents, carers and teachers. . . . This book gives us autism from the inside, as we have never seen it. . . . [Higashida] offers readers eloquent access into an almost entirely unknown world.”—The Independent (U.K.)“The Reason I Jump is a wise, beautiful, intimate and courageous explanation of autism as it is lived every day by one remarkable boy. Naoki Higashida takes us ‘behind the mirror’—his testimony should be read by parents, teachers, siblings, friends, and anybody who knows and loves an autistic person. I only wish I’d had this book to defend myself when I was Naoki’s age.”—Tim Page, author of Parallel Play and professor of journalism and music at the University of Southern California“[Higashida] illuminates his autism from within. . . . Anyone struggling to understand autism will be grateful for the book and translation.”—Kirkus ReviewsFrom the Hardcover edition.

It was really hard for me to rate this book with a basic star rating. As a parent of an autistic child, I wanted this to be life changing, shocking and raw. I ended up feeling like this book raises as many questions as it does provide answers. It was somewhat hard for me to imagine that any child at the age of thirteen could manage to articulate their thoughts and ideas so clearly, and this led me to wondering if I were missing something in translation or if the thoughts were being restructured a bit by the interviewer.Still, there are a lot of answers to common questions in this book, about the whats and whys of Autism and how it affects the person who is living with it. I do think that if you are a parent looking for an answer, you must keep in mind that this book is only from the perspective of one child and may not reflect on what someone else is going through or has experienced with the disorder in its various forms. This is well written, thought provoking and makes you think about how we judge people with autism quite unfairly. I think it is worth a read no matter your situation. In the end, I decided on four stars for this book, because it was attention grabbing and it was different. I felt there were definite advantages to having an autistic person explain autism to those of us who do not live the experience directly every day.I won this book is a firstreads giveaway. My opinions are my own.

Dear,Naoki HigashidaI bought your book originally for a college class and began reading for pleasure after a long day at work. I knew Autism was a disability that most people look down on because I live with a younger brother on the spectrum. I was prepared to read the same information I’d seen in books my parents had purchased in the past to help them raise him to be a person who could survive in modern day society. I soon found out that I was completely wrong about this. “The Reason I Jump” was nothing compared to those books. Unlike my parent’s books, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this through every page turn. Print media written by someone that has Autism, seems more helpful in comparison to something written about Autism by someone who has never lived a day in a person with Autism’s shoes. In a media course I am currently taking at Corban University in Oregon, I have learned that the society in the United States has a transmission of culture with the media. We tend to pay attention to things that capture our attention at that very moment, instead of focusing on what is right in front of us. Our societies’ greatest concern is not helping people with Autism live to the fullest of their abilities, but to be how great can we make the next smartphone or tablet so we can live in a more lavish lifestyle. We should be living a lifestyle that is not conformed. Romans 12: 2 tells us, “And not be conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” This is a passage that speaks the truth about how we should live, which is that we must learn our priorities and help others in need, instead of helping ourselves, therefore, not being conformists to the media around us.Your amazing book helped opened my eyes in such a way that it has helped me form a better relationship with my brother. I can now understand why he does certain things throughout the day that naturally make other people confused. He and I can share moments and live lives fuller since I have read your book.God Bless,Crystal

I read a lot of books about autism because my brother is severely autistic. I am very thankful to Nagoki Higashida for answered questions that I have about my brother's behavior and the way that he thinks. And also answering some questions that had not even occurred to me! His voice came through this book as very genuine and I have recognized some of the same feelings in my brother as Nagoki Higashida. In fact I wish that my brother had the experience of being trained to use the special keyboard. So many things are locked inside for my brother but Nagoki been has let some of them out via the keyboard. My brother also jumps. He always does this just before he starts a walk. He also loves to walk in places filled with nature. He wanted to go to a park when I asked him where on our latest visit. I have read quite a few books written by Asperger's but this one by a boy who has autism rings home for me. My brother can speak but usually he does not initiate any conversation, he is limited to a few words of a reply. I can see the struggle that he goes through when he is trying to "grab" something to say.I was aware of the overload of senses but I didn't realize that the floors could be tilting for him. That must be why he touches the wall here and there trying to get some balance.I thought that the author really conveyed how regular people can hurt people with autism's feelings. I knew that from being with my brother. I have heard people talk about my brother in front of him and that is mean. I know the author would feel the same way. This book is very valuable for understanding autism and I wish that caregivers in group homes and others who work with people who have autism would read this book. When I read this book, I truly wanted more. I am hoping that there will be a place in the future where we can send out questions to you. I have so much more that I want to learn. If you have a family member who has autism please read this book.I received this book as a win from FirstReads but that in no way influenced my thoughts or feelings in the review.

Amazon.com Review

Gary Zukav's American Book Award-winning The Dancing Wu Li Masters masterfully introduces the layman to quantum and particle physics, as well as Einstein's relativity theories. With a similar dose of amiable, easy-to-understand prose, Zukav guides readers into the spiritual realm in his bestselling The Seat of the Soul. Zukav questions the Western model of the soul, alleging that the human species is in the midst of a great transformation, evolving from a species that pursues power based upon the perceptions of the five senses--"external power"--to one that pursues power based upon perceptions of the soul--"authentic power." He believes that humans are immortal souls first, physical beings second, and that once we become conscious of this transformation--once we align our personalities with our soul--we will stimulate our spiritual growth and become better people in the process. This insightful, lucid synthesis of modern psychology and new-age principles has been described as the "physics of the soul." Who better to explain such heady concepts than Gary Zukav?

Bought this book 25 years ago, and it changed my outlook on life at that time. Bought 5 extra copies for friends to give away I was so impressed. Most did not read it then when I would inquire.Life goes on raising family and working, but tried to incorporate the things I learned in this book in tack.Life goes south, divorce at 50, change of lifestyle immediately, and lost searching for a path back. Read this book again to gain balance and accept the circumstances I was dealt.Life goes on some more. Met a couple people who were interested in the book so I bought them each this book. It seems when you get older you have time to delve into your soul issues. Then the worst time of my life hit me at 67---my son died in a car accident. Was completely devastated for three months, looking for any reason to stick around. I wanted to go with him. One day I looked through the bookshelf, pulled out this book for the 3rd time, and it helped save my life, even though I still grieve. Now the people I had bought this book for 20 some years ago have read it and told me they wished they had read it years ago.So do yourself a good service and buy this book.---it could save your life and help you understand why "stuff" happens in our lives we can't seem to grasp.I am now ordering more of this book for gifts again.I have now bought all of Zukav's books and all are wonderful and insightful. Read this one first.

The Seat of the Soul, is the first spiritualty book I read and it fundamentally changed the way I view everything. I first read it in 1998 when I was nineteen and it ignited something inside me that was so profound... it is difficult to articulate. The lessons I found among its pages inspired me to embark on a personal journey to become the best version of myself by living a more fulfilled conscious life full of intention. It sparked my thirst for more knowledge. The book is broken into the following chapters: Evolution, Karma, Reverence, Heart, Intuition, Light, Intention, Choice, Addiction, Relationships, Souls, Psychology, Illusion, Power and Trust. The most enduring lesson I received from this book is that my intention creates my reality and that I can manifest anything in my life through conscious intention. I always knew that my thoughts were powerful, but everything seemed to click inside me when I read Gary Zukav's explanation on how intention creates karmic energy that ultimately comes back."Every action, thought, and feeling is motivated by an intention, and that intention is a cause that exists as one with an effect. If we participate in the cause, it is not possible for us not to participate in the effect. In the most profound way, we are held responsible for our every action, thought and feeling, which is to say, for our every intention."I related to the concept that every energy I release ultimately comes back to me and have witnessed this play out hundreds of times in my life. Sometimes I have found myself not wanting to accept the fact that I have indeed created a particular outcome but when I examined my motives and my intentions I always found my part and thus the truth of a particular situation. After reading this book, I questioned my motivation and intention of everything I did and looked at my behavior in a new way. I tried to minimize complaining and started asking myself inquisitive questions such as: What is my intention with sharing this? Am I looking for a particular response? What do I hope to get out of this? After reading the book, I tried to make more responsible choices and take into account the consequences of my choices by asking: do I really want what this choice will produce? Am I ready to accept all of the consequences of this choice? Here's a few of my favorite lessons from the book: "Forgiveness means that you do not hold others responsible for your experiences." "An intention is not only a desire. It is the use of your will." "Only by feeling compassion for yourself can you feel compassion for others." "The Universe backs the part of you that is of clearest intention." "Temptation is a dress rehearsal for a karmic experience of negativity."I wasn't able to relate to everything Gary Zukav talks about in this book. The concept that my soul is part of a huge mother ship was a bit too much for me to grasp or understand, so the parts I didn't like I ignored. Instead, I chose to focus on the lessons that spoke to me and I dismissed the rest which is my philosophy for any non-fiction book. There are so many amazing concepts I would highly recommend reading this book.My advice would be to read it with an open mind, take what you want and leave the rest.

Like many earlier review writers, I gave up on this book when I came to the Dolphin chapter: dolphins are dying because they are exhausted and have decided collectively through their group consciousness to abandon the Earth...This is relayed as fact. Wow. I am open minded, but am particularly troubled when I come across writers who, rather than state things as "as i see it", or "in my view", or "what I believe is...", instead tell us *exactly* how things are. This certainty is disturbing, particularly when claiming to know what dolphins think, or the various planes of angel existence, etc.I wanted to like this because Oprah supports this guy so highly. But at the end of the day, for me, this is troubling material. I consider myself to be "on the path", and gained very little from this writer. There are lots of other writers out there who relay their own sense of spirituality from a more nuanced and less controlling perspective. I especially like Lama Surya Das, Thicht Nhat Hanh, Marianne Williamson (although another person who knows exactly how it is... still, the message is a very positive one), Michael Singer, Tosha Silver, Peace Pilgrim, Eckhart Tolle.I find that the most important thing to ask oneself if whether a writer is asking you to take what they say and judge it on its merits, and then to incorporate it, or not, into your view of spirituality. If they are insistent and say "this is the way it is", then most likely they are simply asking you to buy into their version of reality, which is unlikely to be reality at all.Respect those who seek the Truth, doubt those who find it.

This is a book like no other. It explains things I've never heard of so it takes a long time to read. Feels like a reference book you go back and forth. There's a study and exercise guide at the end of the book for each chapter. Very insightful. I'm loving it, but it's taking me a long time. It's a never ending journey book.Oprah lives and dies by this book. She mentions it in all her interviews. It changed her life and it's changing my way of thinking about a lot of things in life. I recommend it to everyone who is interested in going deeper.

I decided to revisit this book after having read it years ago. This time it had more meaning. It's as if Zukav was speaking to who I am now and the higher self I am evolving to be. It is true that when the student is ready, the teacher will appear.

This 14th-century adventure book is surprisingly sweet and innocent, considering it includes scenes of battle, privation, and death. Originally published in 1949, and winner of a Newbery award, the story feels dated compared to books published more recently about medieval children's lives. It contains lots of factual tidbits about castles, transportation, monastic life, warfare, and other topics, carefully woven into the tale. A few of these seem anachronistic, such as the song Robin sings for the king - a song actually only a couple of hundred years old. But in fairness, more is known today about historical accuracy than was known seventy years ago. Robin is an appealing character, though he's at the far end of the curve in pushing himself to do tasks that are difficult or dangerous for him. The men who sometimes carry him and his crutches on their backs seem astoundingly strong, schlepping the ten-year-old up and down hills and stairs and towers without tiring; this I found somewhat unbelievable. But Brother Luke's mantra, "Thou hast only to follow the wall long enough and there will be a door in it," is as insightful and useful today as it was for Robin.

I'm so happy that we picked this edition for a gift, it looks better than the picture provided, it doesn't have that Laurel Leaf Newberry line down at the bottom. The story is, of course, fantastic as well as the illustrations! This was a great buy at a great price!

Great book. A timeless classic.Perfect for kids with a high reading level, but who are not old enough to be reading young adult novels.

Another hard to find book found right here. Thank you

It’s an exciting adventure without being geared too much toward one gender or the other. She says it’s a great read and loved it so much she chose it for a book report.

Delightful, low-key, descriptively lean account of England circa the 1330s through the eyes of a handicapped boy. Not the action adventure some readers seem to be expecting, but a non-revisionist slice of life, Middle Ages style. Younger readers will need to be good readers, and patient ones, to reap these rewards. (In fact, that's what this book is about!)De Angeli's short Newbery winner follows Robin, ten year old son of a nobleman fighting in Edward III's "Scottish wars" and one of the Queen's ladies-in-waiting. Robin's London caregivers are wiped out by the plague, so the care of his delicate health (he has recently been stricken lame) falls to a benevolent monk named Brother Luke. The good brother quietly applies himself to strengthening Robin in both body and mind, emphasizing that perseverance and patience will always result in finding "a door in the wall," a way beyond present obstacles. Robin's lessons include wood carving, reading, writing, singing and playing music, swimming, and walking with crutches. There is no insistent plot to jerk the story forward and no loud, overstated characters to interfere with Robin's quiet development. Robin shares some mild adventures on the road in the company of Luke and a minstrel named John Go-in-the-wynd before all his newfound resourcefulness and skill are called upon in defense of a local castle.Nice, pleasant, quick. Unapologetic about the era's Christian culture and the benevolence of its priests, so probably not very popular among trendy Newbery spokespeople these days. But De Angeli's message of gentle, humble perseverance is actually inspiring.

Kids with disabilities, especially ones like Asperger's Syndrome that are only partially disabling, have trouble figuring out what to make of their disability. They often have to choose between being held to a high standard they can't achieve, and getting the "pity treatment" from people who think disability means they can never achieve anything. Their interactions with adults mostly model those two extremes. They don't often get a chance to think about their disability as it is, with its advantages and disadvantages, or get instruction customized to their strengths as well as their needs.Robin, the protagonist of _The Door In The Wall_, deals with the same struggle all disabled kids do-- trying to find what he *can* do in a world where his abilities don't quite match up with the set of qualities his society values. He is taught to strengthen himself in all the ways he can, and eventually he finds a way to use his disability to his advantage: *only* a disabled boy with his skill set could do what he did.My son with Asperger's has really enjoyed this book for the way it portrays disabilities, and after reading it we've had many discussions about how the disadvantages of Asperger's are the flip side of its advantages. (For example, Asperger's trades off the ability to engage in social interaction for the ability to absorb and recall a large body of information; the latter can be a tremendous advantage and perhaps even lead to future employment.) _The Door In The Wall_ has encouraged my son to view himself in a positive light, disability and all, and find activities that play to his unconventional strengths.

The book was really interesting. My son is reading it at school. It helped to bring it to life with the sound effects and songs!

The book sample was intriguing; but the writing did not hold up after that. A detective was repeatedly in denial about strange events, even when he had witnessed similar things in his past. An especially bad quality for a "detective." His denial about consistent telepathy was especially nonsensical and irritating, and when finally accepted, the retort "Get out of my head" was used ad nauseum. The attraction between the MCs was spelled out for us as physical, but there was no rationale for any deeper connection, yet love supposedly blossomed. Overall - badly realized characters, weak plot, and substandard writing.

I really wasn't sure what to expect but this book blew me away! I'm a big fan of paranormal so I have some pretty high standards about the books I read. Michele Notaro however exceeded any expectations. I didn't doubt her ability to write a great paranormal, as well as mystery and suspense. She writes a mean romance don't get me wrong and I have get to read her Reclaiming Hope books, I will remedy that quick though!I loved the story, the characters and I truly liked that this was more about the actual storyline than just two guys hooking up. Don't get me wrong I love that as well, but sometimes I just want the story with a little romance. All though the chemistry is off the charts with these two and I can't wait to see them develop more into their relationship, I just enjoyed the story and their build up more. I know without a doubt that the next book will be even better that thus one as the story progresses. I hope there isn't a long wait.

I thoroughly enjoyed Sebastian and Ailins story! The banter between them, their growing attraction and the elements of magic. With Sebastian being a police detective and Ailin a specialist who is brought in for special cases they are forced to work together when killings with an occult twist starts to appear. And things just gets more and more strange for Seb the longer they work together, both his feelings for Ailin and what's happening around them.I loved the connection between Seb and Ailin, Ailins family and Sera (totally adorable) and their interactionwith George is hilarious. This was a great start to a new series and I can't wait to read the next book.

Magic, murder and love create an amazing story! Action packed, intriguing story-line, filled with magic, witches, fae, warlocks, incubus, and so much more! Beautifully written with a compelling story-line that kept me reading from cover to cover.Ailin and Seb have an amazing connection with a wonderful slow burn to soulmates. The world-building was incredible and i totally mentally bought into all the interesting pieces of the world that this author created.I will be looking forward to the next book in the series!

This book is amazing. I don't just hand out five star reviews for every book I like. Five stars are reserved for books that are truly exceptional and this is definitely one of them. The story is amazing, the characters are easy to love, and the author really pulls out all the emotions. I laughed, I cried, and I got angry. I love it when authors make me feel their character's emotions.I wish I had more words to describe how wonderful this book is. I can't wait for the next one!

The story pulled me in and I could not let go till I finished it. Well written and edit. Great characters building by the author.I can't wait to find out more about the mystery behind how Ailin is taking care of all his siblings at such a young age and what happened to their elders; and why was Sebastian abandoned as a child and what happened to his parents. The two MC interaction and chemistry was really spot on for me.Highly recommended if you like a non-stop action, paranormal read with a good romance thrown in!

This romance has so much chemistry it's a heart hazard! A. and Seb are so great together you cannot help but want to soak up all that heat. Yeah for Enchanter's Flame!

Sebastian has been on the police force for years. He was in the military and tries not to look back to that traumatic time in his life. It’s becoming harder as bodies are turning up with markings on them, drained of blood, and it takes Sebastian back to a time and place he would rather leave in the past. Ailin is called in to partner with Sebastian on the case and Sebastian is not at all pleased with this new turn of events. Ailin does things his own way and Sebastian has no idea what to make of the seemingly reckless man.The Enchanter’s Flame is built upon supernatural elements set in a contemporary world. The majority of the book is from Sebastian’s point of view and we learn about the magic all around him as he does. Ailin and Sebastian play well off of each other as they have had completely opposite life experiences. Sebastian also has no idea of the magical world that Ailin lives in.The characters here were great and there is a chemistry and a slow burn between the men. There is a lot going on with the story and the world building was not as strong as I would have liked, and I needed more backstory for Ailin as well as the entire magical world he comes from. Ailin is not used to having to run anything by anyone else and makes a lot of decisions for Sebastian without his consent. He then tells Sebastian he will tell him all about it later, but in most cases later never came and there were too many loose threads with not nearly enough information for me. Ailin was also the most powerful witch, yet we really don’t get to see him perform any magic that was so fantastical or worthy of his title.I liked the overall story and the characters and the relationship they were building. With so much going on in the book there wasn’t a lot of time to see the men together as a couple either. But, this is book one of a new series and my interest is piqued enough to continue on with their journey.
