In my doctoral studies, I learned program planning with the 1st edition of this book. Over the last 13 years, it has been at my side as I administered educational programs for museums, corporate training departments, and institutions of higher education. When the 2nd edition came out, I updated my own copy. Frequently, I purchased the book for my own staff.When I learned a 3rd ed was out, I was thrilled because I hoped it would incorporate the many exciting technological developments since the 2nd edition was written. While it does do this, it also left online (and not in print) MANY of the helpful figures and exhibits that are at the heart of what make this an ongoing user's manual.IF I were teaching a program planning course, I'd have to use this 3rd edition and spend the time pulling online exhibits (accessible with purchase of written text) to the attention of my students. Have not read this book yet but hopefully will get to it soon. Just adding to my understanding about what happened to my Cousin.

This is a gripping story of survival during a very difficult time for prisoners in Japanese work camps--they called upon this Dutch Doc to do everything he could to try to keep them alive long enough for the Americans to come to their rescue A very moving tribute to their courage by one of the ones who made it out alive.

I am intimately involved with this story as the son of another survivor who experienced this whole thing with Mr. Charles. I have read all of the books regarding the USS Houston CA-30 (The Galloping Ghost by W. Winslow, Ship of Ghosts by Jim Hornfischer just to name two).Mr. Charles takes the reader literally into the prison camp experience like very few others (368 survivors) could.This is frankly one heck of a first hand account read that I strongly urge anyone interested in this part of history to read for certain.God bless your soul Mr. Charles and thank you Sir for your sacrifices to our great countries freedoms.

I bought this book some years ago and lent it to my Dad. My Dad, despite having a rather large collection already, asked to keep it! He said it was his very favorite. Why do I mention that? Well, my Dad was there. He was in the Burma Railway group that included Mr. Charles and Dr. Hekking, and Dr. Hekking had treated him in the camps.This is not a psychologist's analysis, or something written by an outside historian; this is a personal account, and a treasure. Sad that Dr. Hekking's grandson didn't like it. I didn't get the same impression at all, but rather one of a story told by an entire group, as if the reader were sitting with them and they were all adding to the tale, with Mr. Charles pulling it all together.

The author tries to create the illusion that he knew my grandfather real well. In fact they only met on a few occasions. My grandfather, Henri Hekking, was a stickler for detail and was disturbed by the fact that the author "recalled" conversations between them that never occured. The "death railroad" was a very traumatic experience for alot of people and the events should be exposed, but people who glorify themselves on others heroics are bothersome to me. Overall the stories are portrayed very well but I feel they have been "over-enhanced" for better book sales.

This books get 3 stars from me because it wasn't a total waste of my time as it was for others. If I had to share my opinion- I would say that this is for people who are in the beginning of there careers, who haven't had a ton of interaction or awareness with interpersonal skills, or just for someone who's picking up a book randomly, thought it would be interesting. If you're looking for something profound.. this isn't the book for you.. if you're looking for something that "should" be common sense, that most people still don't apply.. this book does a great job at pointing out the obvious-- it repeats itself a lot, the format gets pretty dry, and the last chapter is pointless because it doesn't flow with the other 16 chapters.. outside of that-- i'm sure there's something in this book for somebody-- do yourself a favor and not pay full price-- try to buy the penny version ;-)

I did not enjoy this book, and it did not offer any new information . It’s more of a common sense review. I got halfway through and decided scanning headings and subheadings would give me the same data as reading it entirely.

I first read "Tree" when I was 11. It has stuck with me all these years. I have re-read it multiple times, gaining new insights every time, depending on MY developmental stage. At almost 75, I expect if I am lucky, I will be able to read it several more times. This biography by Yow, was fascinating when I read it when it first came out. At that time, I wanted to get all Smith's other books and reread them as well but they were still hidden from view. I thought that was really silly because I remember they were excellent too and I wanted to follow those stories again with the insight of the biography. I see they have since been republished. Bet that is due to Professor Vow's excellent biography. I have ordered them all and will happily take them to Lake Michigan with me this summer to have a Betty Smith immersion.

Very well written, readable and enjoyable biography of American novelist Betty Smith. This told me just about everything I wanted to know about the author of "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn." I find the biographies of authors to be invaluable. I'd recommend this to any aspiring author, and of course to any fan of "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" who wants some context for the genesis of the novel, or any person who is simply interested in the story of the woman behind an American classic.

I enjoy Betty Smith's books. This biography provided with greater understanding of how, when, where she wrote her books. Now if someone would just publish a book on her other writings-plays, articles, etc. And if they would reissue "Tomorrow will be better".

Oh, this book.I admit I haven't read Dean Koontz in ages. When I was a kid, I liked his suspense and horror books well enough, but we parted ways right around when I went to college.Since then, we'd been strangers. Life got in the way, the normal business of making money that's already been long-since relegated to one bill or another.Last summer my dog died. Not just any dog, but my spirit animal, my totem. She was the best and most beautiful dog I ever knew, my business partner in my animal behavior consulting business. She was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma after an emergency splenectomy. She, my robust warrior princess, succumbed just weeks after her surgery and a few days after her 10th birthday. The loss of her knocked the wind and all the joy right out of me. I couldn't believe it - she'd been so healthy her whole life and then she was...gone.I don't remember how I came across this book - I think it was a GoodReads suggestion. Wherever I learned of it, I can only say that It came into my life just when I needed a read exactly this wonderful.A Big Little Life is a gorgeous book. I laughcried throughout most of it. It is such a stunning tribute to a beautiful dog, a great friendship, and a life well lived. It ranks up there with some of the top dog books I've read (and I'm no slouch - I have two floor-to-ceiling bookcases dedicated to dog books alone) and is one I look forwarded to reading again someday, after my heart has healed a little further. This takes the number one slot in the "dog tribute" subgenre of dog books.This is a book for dog lovers, written by a man who very obviously loved Trixie a great deal.RECOMMENDED PAIRING: hot tea, rainy day, snuggled under some blankets on the couch next to one or more of your favorite dogs.

This was a love letter to a beautiful dog who possessed great character, intelligence and love. The dog instinctively knew when someone or some other dog was not to be trusted. She grew to be the love of both Dean and his wife's life. Koontz wrote the book lovingly and honored Trixi's spirit with every word. Although I usually dread the end of a book about a dog because it inevitably ends when the dog's life ends, 99 percent of the book was about the dog's life and Koontz did not drag out the death of this beautiful creature. He talked about it and about their grief afterwords, but he ended the book on a positive note. I fell in love with Trixie, although I never met her, except through Koontz' references to the most significant aspects of their life together. I enthusiastically suggest this book to any reader and, most especially, to those who read and understand the language of DOG.

Dean Koontz's A BIG LITTLE LIFE, is a beautiful and inspiring tribute to his golden retriever, Trixie. Those of us who have read Koontz's novels know that dogs - and especially goldens - have always appeared prominently in his works; and Trixie's picture has graced many a book jacket, sitting happily with her human owner. So it was no surprise how much this dog meant to both Koontz and his wife, Gerda. Trixie was a dog who not only changed their lives, but showed them a glimpse of the truly spiritual. As Koontz so beautifully writes, "She lived to love and to receive love, which is the condition of angels."A BIG LITTLE LIFE is a very spiritual memoir, and Koontz is clear that he saw Trixie as an angel (in the overarching, grandly sacred sense). One of Koontz's acquaintances referred to Trixie as a "holy soul," and that is just the way Koontz portrays her. In the memoir he describes incident after incident that reveals Trixie as an amazingly special being, with the ability to connect with the humans in her world, to differentiate between good and evil, and to see beyond the mundane. Whether or not you believe the stories Koontz tells, it's impossible to read this book and not feel the impact of this dog on the lives of her human owners.I've read most of Koontz's novels - I have always found them to be both frightening and uplifting in their affirmation of the human spirit. Even his most disturbing novels (like INTENSITY) contain within them an element of hope that leaves the reader profoundly touched. My favorite Koontz novel has always been WATCHERS, in which a wonderful golden retriever named Einstein leads her human companions out of the darkness. That this novel was written over ten years before Koontz acquired his own wonderful golden is amazing!Read A BIG LITTLE LIFE - it will move you in unexpected ways. Even if you're not a dog lover, you can't help but be inspired by this animal's impact on the humans in her life. Koontz writes, "We are a community of potential saints with a shared destiny, and each of us is a thread in a tapestry of meaning." Trixie is the one who helped Koontz see this and live this - and in that alone she was an angel. This is a lovely tribute to a very special dog.
