This is a story that anyone who has served in the armed forces would enjoy. The author brings to life the molding of a young crew who matured in an unforgettable battle during WW2. This group of 224 men fought a much larger Japanese force from their destroyer escort against battleships and cruisers to protect escort carriers. Although the ship was sunk and 90 men were lost, the author brings the stories of many of the individuals and their families. The closeness of the survivors as well as some of the families of the deceased remained for many years. The destroyer escort, Samuel B. Roberts lives on as several US Navy ship have inherited the name.

This book presented a good background of the USS Samuel B Roberts (Sammy B) and it’s original crew. My father joined the ship only several weeks before it saw action and was sunk. While his handwritten account shortly after the war differs from the author’s, there is always the issue of perspective. All in all, I believe Mr. Wukovits presented a balanced and realistic version of the chaos that must have occurred during the battle of Leyte Gulf. I would recommend this book.

Mr. Wukovits is to be thanked for providing one last glimpse into the lives of a stalwart crew who did their duty with honor and integrity in the face of death. This is not a history of Taffy 3 or the Battle off Samar. As the cover states, it's as intimate look as a non-crew-member will ever get of a particular ships company. Anyone with time at sea will recognize the timelessness of these men and their personalities.I hope there is always a USN ship in-commission named Roberts, Carr and Copeland.

Awe inspiring. Heart wrenching. Gut wrenching. Bravery almost beyond belief. This is the story of the heroic sailors of the USS Samuel B. Roberts during an historic battle in the Pacific of Ww2. This book and how those sailors fought for crew and our country will stay with me forever now. And I plan on visiting their memorial in San Diego to offer up a heartfelt thank you for what they accomplished and sacrificed.

This is a sad book. If you have any clue what happens during Leyte Gulf you know the ending won't be pretty. But Wukovits does a good job of telling the story of the ship and getting you attached to the crew. Once the battle at Leyte occurs the detail in the book is excellent.I always think the worst part to these poor sailors is how long they get left in the water after the fight. Just as explained in the Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors - these brave guys have to spend a long time waiting to get plucked out of the sea.

Starts slow with a detailed background of many of the crew, but the last 2/3 of the book is absolutely riveting.

For some mysterious reason I am presently fascinated with WWII history ,there are frightening similarities now that were present in the world leading up to this conflagration ...I enjoyed the book ...I read too rapidly to find any fault with the content ...

The author John Wukovits presents a detailed account of the ship and crew which provides an insight into the daily lives of sailors aboard a ship of the fleet. In addition to a connection one feels with the crew the author is able to describe the events that occured to an extent that one can vividly picture what had taken place that eventful day. Carrying only two five inch guns, Lieutenant Commander Robert Copeland directed the crew to charge head long toward the Japanese Cruisers and Battleships carrying 8-14 inch guns. As a commander of another ship commented, it was a suicidal run. I highly recommend this book which is an inspirational true story of bravery and sacrifice aboard the USS Samuel B. Roberts.

What a great read! I loved Island of Sweet Pies and Soldiers, and was worried that Sara Ackerman's second book wouldn't measure up, but I think The Lieutenant's Nurse was even better! Great characters, great setting, great story and I was one hundred percent hooked the whole way through. All the little snippets of info leading up to the attack also really added a whole new angle that I had never known about. Now I have a book hangover!

Excellent historical setting with WWII intrigue. Well developed characters and code breaking and medical settings at Pearl Harbor. Thoroughly enjoyable read.

"The Lieutenant’s Nurse" is Sara Ackerman’s second novel set in Hawaii during WWII. I really enjoyed it. She does a great job describing the atmosphere in Hawaii leading up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor as well as the chaos following the bombing and the aftermath. This novel combines intrigue, a love story, and a glimpse into the experience of a nurse serving in Hawaii during the war.

I’m surprised more books aren’t written about the attack on Pearl Harbor from the civilian view. This gave a bit of the confusion and fear as well as delves into behaviors of the time concerning the way women were treated.

This portrayal of the attack on the Pearl Harbor kept me interested throughout. Sara Ackerman's blend of fiction with actual events in history proved illuminating. Her characters were interesting, bold, and impactful. The romance of the story went a bit awry for me in the middle and I was surprised at the twists it took. The beginning held a forbidden, mysterious element between the two main characters that was quite good and then it tapered off losing some of that lovely romantic element. Once the characters arrived in Hawaii the romance became muddled and the chemistry between the two was lost. Despite this, the journey of this female lead was admirable and intriguing and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the woman she is, the risks she's willing to take, and the values in which she believes. In a terrifying time of much despair and uncertainty the bravery Ackerman portrays through her female characters is uplifting and unmatched. As strength's are tested, Ackerman relies heavily on the fortitude of the brave nurses during this time and punctuates that bravery with one woman who refuses to be tested. For that aspect alone, the story was a winner for me. The story gets detailed and a lot of characters come and go but overall I enjoyed this piece of historical fiction.

Set in Hawaii right before and during the Peal Harbor attack, this novel moves quickly and keeps your interest. The heroine, Eva, is a nurse bound for Hawaii on a cruise ship when she meets a handsome naval officer. Eva has run away from a scandal in her hometown and hopes to start a new life with her boyfriend, who is stationed in the Pacific. The naval officer she meets introduces many complications, both in her relationship with her boyfriend and with her sense of wellbeing. Did the higher ups in the military know about the imminent attack on Pearl Harbor? This novel explores that question.I really liked this novel and read it very quickly. However, the last third of the book had a few too many things going on with the plot. I could have done without the backstory or the subplot involving the therapy dog. Overall, though, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and give it 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5.

This is such a turbulent time in history, and devastating and heartbreaking.I appreciate the author discussing important topics such as the sisterhood the nurses have, keeping up the morale of the soldiers, and assisting in so many ways. This is a story of war, love, hope and faith. I highly recommend this novel for those readers who enjoy Historical Fiction during World War Two. My students like using this.

It is a diary written by a 14 year old Jewish girl, who was forced into hiding with her family in Holland during WWII - hiding from the occupying Nazi Germans. You will be surprised how smart this 14 yr old girl (and her writing) was. Diary entries deal with her thought throughout the 2 years hiding:- hope, hopelessness, suffering trough cramped spaces with limited resources, dealing with personal conflicts between hiding members, thoughts of adolescent, etc. Cannot expect too much historical commentary, but a lot of Feminist sensitivity in it (warning for guys readers). The knowledge of the fact that she died afterward in a concentration camp (covered in Afterward of the book) makes her writing more tragic and reflecting. I will give a 4 out of 5 stars (due to the fact that it is not exactly my kind of book). I would think that this book is appealing especially for teenager, but I knew adults love this book as well.

I was bit for a 7$ loss on this one. This is listed as a version of the book by Amazon but it is not a book it is a student workbook with questions about the book. You are given the impression you are buying the book from the descriptions and the reviews. Deceptive advertising to be sure. AGAIN, THIS ITEM IS ***NOT*** THE ACTUAL "AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF ANNE FRANK" BOOK.

At this point Anne Frank's diary illustrates not a person, but an iconic figure. Like Lincoln, like Churchill, Anne Frank is a symbol of greatness, all the more so because she was an ordinary girl living in extraordinary times. Personally, Anne Frank's diary inspired me to keep a diary for myself, which I have, off and on, for forty years. And I must say, mine pales in comparison. Not only because I don't live in Nazi-occupied Europe, but because I am not nearly the writer that Anne was.With her vivid descriptions, dialogue, and ability to capture her fellow inmates in words, she is indeed a budding writer of the first order. That she sometimes veers into self-pity, drama, and exaggeration, will be forgiven. Her difficult relationship with her mother is easily understood, and her uncompromising judgment of all concerned earns one's respect. She adores and idealizes her father. This, also, is typical of that age and he seems worthy of such treatment. Just look at what his Dutch employees risked for him! Anne's assessment of her father seems just, and all the more heartbreaking, for he outlives his most ardent admirer.Tears will always well in my eyes when I finish the diary, and read the afterword. I forget who wrote about the how this child's whisper has outlasted the shouts of murderers...Anne has immortalized the terrible suffering and waste of life, love, and humanity that the Nazis' wreaked on an unsuspecting populace. Yet it is her voice that we remember, and if we are lucky enough to have read the diary, we know that she knows we have read her, seen into her soul, and love her as we love ourselves.

After I visited the building in Amsterdam where Anne Frank and her family had to hide during WWII, I finally decided to read her famous diary for myself. And I have to say: I was impressed. The book works very well on a variety of levels:As HistoryThis is an important historical witness of how the daily life of a teenager was restricted and finally squashed by the Nazi regime in Amsterdam. The humanity of Anne's daily thoughts - free-flowing and turbulent - make for a stark contrast to Hitler's cold machinery of might and control. Anne does not embody a perfect human but a real human. She becomes the face for all the faceless who were sucked into a totalitarian system.As LiteratureConsidering that the diary is written by a thirteen to fifteen year-old, it is incredibly well written. The Nazis have deprived the world of a witty, pensive and creative writer.As PsychologyAnne's diary is filled with insights into human nature. Her reflections on herself and her fellow humans are detailed and instructive, sometimes consciously so and sometimes unconsciously by eloquently voicing the feelings of someone her age.As Child EducationThis is an important book both for teenagers and parents. Anne's honesty about her feelings, development (physical and otherwise), problems and joys might help teenagers to deal better with their own development - and parents might be moved by Anne to more sympathy for that age group.In short, this is essential reading, and ideal when discussing the Holocaust and the Second World War with a young teenager.

I listened to this book in it’s entirety recently. All I can say is: Life Changing!!!Now I DID read the “1 star” reviews. This is my take. Physicians that take the time to do bad reviews on Amazon? Ok. But really, there are studies to support about any angle. Truly. But what grasped me were the authors patients with life altering issues, having such incredible improvement or loss of symptoms... not to mention it is just good science. Sure there might be ways to question some of the studies. But the ones that mattered most were the ones not opposed by the nay-sayers 1 star reviewers. Like how they have long since admitted low fat high carb is not (heart) healthy (etc). Duh.If you truly believe that high carbs/sugar diets are not an issue in the American diet, then you aren’t looking around. None of the negative reviews that want to poo poo the idea we don’t need so many carbs (grains), fail to understand, it seems, that he has plenty of naturally occurring non-grain carbs in this diet. Enough to do what is needed in regards to carbs in our body!Society’s whose longevity is related to a plant based diet are typically those very active regardless of age and as was mentioned, a healthy community... that is great for them. Their diets, LIKE HIS, are NATURAL carbs and none processed. In the day of virtual community and low activity, a high carb/low fat diet, well, there is plenty of proof it is not working for us!!There is also plenty of proof of our deficiency of omega 3’s, Vitamin D, and so forth.Go ahead and defend your carbs. I think I will go with the basic statistic that diabetics are twice as likely to develope Alzheimer’s and dynentia and take a different path towards wellness... Cuz the road I was on with the SAD (standard American diet) gave me cancer, and put my overall health at huge risk. With low carb I lost a TON of weight, improved my cholesterol ratios and reversed my pre-diabetic state... aye I need grains. Or not!Again-I highly recommend this book! I am alwo seeing changes in my children as we switch our dietary priorities!

My son started having myoclonus, then he started with Absence seizures....I researched as much ass I could. Put him on a gluten free diet instead of giving the meds from our Neuro...all disappeared! Them one day we cheated and had a donut....BAM! He had his first grand mal within 3 minutes of eating the donut. Back on gluten free diet and has been seizure free for 4 months.I continue to read up on this info and came across this book. Its a good read.

I'm sold on the author's authority and argument. I'm all in--started following his advice and feel so much better. Down two pant sizes, brain fog is gone, and haven't gotten any of the colds/bugs that the rest of my family has picked up this season. I'm looking at my food choices in a different light, and best of all, my internal medicine physician is on board with the program.

These two books have changed our lives. We read Grain Brain first, then bought Wheat Belly. We are now eating a wheat free diet, and we bought the Wheat Belly cookbook. It's helping us adjust to our new way of eating. I've lost 14 pounds in 6 weeks, and my husband lost 8 #'s. At first we went slow, but we wish we jumped in "whole hog" because he is feeling 100% better. He is an Adult 2 diabetic, has high blood pressure, and had irregular heart beat for awhile, was on two heart pills. He also has RA. Now, he feels so good, he's drop one of the diabetic pills, and one of the heart pills, and is doing great. We don't miss wheat products at all. Now am eating all sorts of veggie casseroles , trying new vegetables, and eating low carb fruit like berries, apples, and melons. We love eating the good fats; butter, avocados, coconut oil in my tea, yes my tea! Olive oil and vinegar on green salads, lots of eggs, like every other day an omelet, or eggs and ham. Eggs in our salad, and boiled eggs for snacks, so satisfying. I can't tell you how happy we are to feel good and lose weight at ages 68 and 71. Amen, what more could I say.
