If you're taking MITx 6.00.1x on edX, you NEED this book. This book has a lot of clarifications and examples that will make your progress on the course so much easier. Also, there are free editions of this book available elsewhere, but they don't cover Python 3, and this book does. Well worth the money!

I chose this book for teaching a small intro CS class in Python (3), after reviewing a lot of other books. So many are focused on all the details of the language, but I wanted a book that taught more of the big ideas of computer science/programming. Like: exhaustive enumeration is an amazingly powerful tool in 2016 where our processors go way faster than our programmers go. And bisection search. There's other good, practical outlook in the book. Go read the table of contents. I wish the introduction of OOP were a little easier for beginners. I enjoy Guttag's footnotes and musings.

This is a great book that covers a lot of ground on the field of computer science. Don't expect it to be a step by step guide of how to program in the Python language, or how to use its multiple libraries. Instead this books uses Python to teach you about computation and how to think and solve problems like a computer scientist.Sintaxis, semantics, algorithms and computational complexity are some of the topics you can expect to see in this book, and even though, at some point I had to spent quite a bit of time rereading to grasp some of the concepts, if you have the patience and time, is well worth it!Finger exercises (coding exercises) really give you a chance to put the knowledge you acquire to good use

A very good intro book that not only teaches you the codes/syntax but also methodologies of computing. I bought it for MIT's intro to Python course on EdX, as this is the recommended textbook. The course and the book are both great!

This book is simply amazing. Its purpose is more computer and data science than learning the python language. It is an extensive introduction which dives into stochastic models and inferential statistics. It is really rare to find these topics covered in a book meant for beginners. And you won't believe it but it is fun to read!

This book is a supplement for 6.001x and 6.002x which are introductory computer science courses offered by MIT on edX.org. It is very well written and an absolute must-read if taking the courses.

This is a great book about computer science, but it's a pity that this book (now second edition with a lot of courses and students used it) doesn't follow Python coding convention. If you want to study Python, get an another book, if you are an experienced Python and want to sharpen your computer science knowledge, get this book.

Superb content, as one might expect from MIT. An excellent companion to the MITx: 6.00.n.x series (thus far two) MOOCs. I'll hold onto this one versus selling as used, as is my typical MO after finishing with coursework.

This book is full of ball-breaking exercises that will give you some serious technique. If you're a pro or want to be a pro, mastering these exercises might be essential. If you're not a pro (and I'm not) the book presents some interesting challenges that will enhance your playing but I can't see spending the time and effort to master all of it. For instance I've gone through all the "rudimental ritual" exercises but I'm not going to memorize the whole thing, as the book calls for: it's something like 15 minutes long and I'd rather spend the effort on other aspects of my playing. And the independence/coordination exercises are challenging and rewarding but I don't want to put everything else on hold until I've conquered all of them. I've found the book "The Art of Bebop Drumming" by John Riley to be a bit more user-friendly, but Dawson's uncompromising (and sometimes agonizing) lessons are a great resource--it's just a matter of how much you want to devote yourself to them.

So pleased with this. Had never heard of Alan Dawson until I saw a comment by a guy on YouTube who was chastising people for treating Chapin's Advanced Techniques for Modern Drummer (which I also like) like nothing could ever compete with it. Well, this competes with it. Dawson's Rudimental Ritual alone is worth the price of the book. Makes playing rudiments fun rather than a chore. Definitely a favorite if you care about stepping up your technique and coordination.

Like some of the other reviewers let me say first that the content of the book is excellent. So why only 1 star. The production of the book is terrible. Pages started to fall apart a couple days after I received the book. I still use it to practice, but I am picking up pages off the ground constantly. I mean the whole book is coming unglued. The binding and glue used to produce this book is simply unsatisfactory.

I'm just getting into the four way coordination and it looks challenging. The rudiments section was awesome with some different ideas .So, I'm glad I bought this drum book.

This material is absolutely essential to the serious drummer. I studied with Alan for several years at his basement studio at his home in Lexington. Also there in attendance were the likes of people such as Steve Smith and a very young Terri Lynn Carrington. The list of famous students would be far too long to mention. This was the method he used back then and the information is priceless. Alan was a stern taskmaster and would not allow a student to proceed to the next lesson before he became proficient with the current one. Study this material religiously and attain complete four way coordination,speed,massive chops a musical approach to solo work and all around confidence with the drum set. I owe Alan a debt of gratitude for all he imparted.The kind of dicipline required will also transfer positively to other personal goals and endeavors one may undertake in life. GET THIS BOOK!!! The Drummer's Complete Vocabulary as Taught by Alan Dawson.

As others have stated, the content of the book is great. But the pages fell apart within weeks, which is really annoying.

This book has turned out to be a real unsuspected gem. The Rudiments section in this book is worth the money alone. This book will open your mind and your playing. The exercises are not for the easily frustrated. If you are looking for one book that will get you on the right track to being a very well-rounded drummer, this is it!!!

I am learning a ton from this book and already on lesson 8 of the rudiments...thrilling!!! When you get one down, it is a great sense of accomplishment. This book will give a solid foundation for any style of drums I believe..thanks!.

Great story! My only complaint is that it's too short, the pictures too few, and it's kind of a small book. Not hardcover and maybe as thick as thick as a special edition magazine issue. Still, any story that details an ascent of K2 is for me. A great add to any mountaineers library.

This is one of the most gripping stories. It's hard to believe that it is a true story. You will gasp for breath as Jim details their ascent up K2 and will cry as he painfully recounts the descent. Even if you are not a mountaineer or even have any interest in it, this story is more about friendship, success, triumph, and loss. I would also suggest Jim's book, RISKING ADVENTURE, detailing his other journeys. Although Jim was not an author by profession, he has the gift for narrative writing that keeps you interested page by wonderful page. ENJOY!

Shepard Fairey is an American contemporary street artist, graphic designer, activist, and illustrator who emerged from the skateboarding scene. This is a story that anyone who has served in the armed forces would enjoy. The author brings to life the molding of a young crew who matured in an unforgettable battle during WW2. This group of 224 men fought a much larger Japanese force from their destroyer escort against battleships and cruisers to protect escort carriers. Although the ship was sunk and 90 men were lost, the author brings the stories of many of the individuals and their families. The closeness of the survivors as well as some of the families of the deceased remained for many years. The destroyer escort, Samuel B. Roberts lives on as several US Navy ship have inherited the name.

This book presented a good background of the USS Samuel B Roberts (Sammy B) and it’s original crew. My father joined the ship only several weeks before it saw action and was sunk. While his handwritten account shortly after the war differs from the author’s, there is always the issue of perspective. All in all, I believe Mr. Wukovits presented a balanced and realistic version of the chaos that must have occurred during the battle of Leyte Gulf. I would recommend this book.

Mr. Wukovits is to be thanked for providing one last glimpse into the lives of a stalwart crew who did their duty with honor and integrity in the face of death. This is not a history of Taffy 3 or the Battle off Samar. As the cover states, it's as intimate look as a non-crew-member will ever get of a particular ships company. Anyone with time at sea will recognize the timelessness of these men and their personalities.I hope there is always a USN ship in-commission named Roberts, Carr and Copeland.

Awe inspiring. Heart wrenching. Gut wrenching. Bravery almost beyond belief. This is the story of the heroic sailors of the USS Samuel B. Roberts during an historic battle in the Pacific of Ww2. This book and how those sailors fought for crew and our country will stay with me forever now. And I plan on visiting their memorial in San Diego to offer up a heartfelt thank you for what they accomplished and sacrificed.

This is a sad book. If you have any clue what happens during Leyte Gulf you know the ending won't be pretty. But Wukovits does a good job of telling the story of the ship and getting you attached to the crew. Once the battle at Leyte occurs the detail in the book is excellent.I always think the worst part to these poor sailors is how long they get left in the water after the fight. Just as explained in the Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors - these brave guys have to spend a long time waiting to get plucked out of the sea.

Starts slow with a detailed background of many of the crew, but the last 2/3 of the book is absolutely riveting.

For some mysterious reason I am presently fascinated with WWII history ,there are frightening similarities now that were present in the world leading up to this conflagration ...I enjoyed the book ...I read too rapidly to find any fault with the content ...

The author John Wukovits presents a detailed account of the ship and crew which provides an insight into the daily lives of sailors aboard a ship of the fleet. In addition to a connection one feels with the crew the author is able to describe the events that occured to an extent that one can vividly picture what had taken place that eventful day. Carrying only two five inch guns, Lieutenant Commander Robert Copeland directed the crew to charge head long toward the Japanese Cruisers and Battleships carrying 8-14 inch guns. As a commander of another ship commented, it was a suicidal run. I highly recommend this book which is an inspirational true story of bravery and sacrifice aboard the USS Samuel B. Roberts.

What a great read! I loved Island of Sweet Pies and Soldiers, and was worried that Sara Ackerman's second book wouldn't measure up, but I think The Lieutenant's Nurse was even better! Great characters, great setting, great story and I was one hundred percent hooked the whole way through. All the little snippets of info leading up to the attack also really added a whole new angle that I had never known about. Now I have a book hangover!

Excellent historical setting with WWII intrigue. Well developed characters and code breaking and medical settings at Pearl Harbor. Thoroughly enjoyable read.

"The Lieutenant’s Nurse" is Sara Ackerman’s second novel set in Hawaii during WWII. I really enjoyed it. She does a great job describing the atmosphere in Hawaii leading up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor as well as the chaos following the bombing and the aftermath. This novel combines intrigue, a love story, and a glimpse into the experience of a nurse serving in Hawaii during the war.

I’m surprised more books aren’t written about the attack on Pearl Harbor from the civilian view. This gave a bit of the confusion and fear as well as delves into behaviors of the time concerning the way women were treated.

This portrayal of the attack on the Pearl Harbor kept me interested throughout. Sara Ackerman's blend of fiction with actual events in history proved illuminating. Her characters were interesting, bold, and impactful. The romance of the story went a bit awry for me in the middle and I was surprised at the twists it took. The beginning held a forbidden, mysterious element between the two main characters that was quite good and then it tapered off losing some of that lovely romantic element. Once the characters arrived in Hawaii the romance became muddled and the chemistry between the two was lost. Despite this, the journey of this female lead was admirable and intriguing and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the woman she is, the risks she's willing to take, and the values in which she believes. In a terrifying time of much despair and uncertainty the bravery Ackerman portrays through her female characters is uplifting and unmatched. As strength's are tested, Ackerman relies heavily on the fortitude of the brave nurses during this time and punctuates that bravery with one woman who refuses to be tested. For that aspect alone, the story was a winner for me. The story gets detailed and a lot of characters come and go but overall I enjoyed this piece of historical fiction.

Set in Hawaii right before and during the Peal Harbor attack, this novel moves quickly and keeps your interest. The heroine, Eva, is a nurse bound for Hawaii on a cruise ship when she meets a handsome naval officer. Eva has run away from a scandal in her hometown and hopes to start a new life with her boyfriend, who is stationed in the Pacific. The naval officer she meets introduces many complications, both in her relationship with her boyfriend and with her sense of wellbeing. Did the higher ups in the military know about the imminent attack on Pearl Harbor? This novel explores that question.I really liked this novel and read it very quickly. However, the last third of the book had a few too many things going on with the plot. I could have done without the backstory or the subplot involving the therapy dog. Overall, though, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and give it 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5.

This is such a turbulent time in history, and devastating and heartbreaking.I appreciate the author discussing important topics such as the sisterhood the nurses have, keeping up the morale of the soldiers, and assisting in so many ways. This is a story of war, love, hope and faith. I highly recommend this novel for those readers who enjoy Historical Fiction during World War Two.
