Drone Wars is a rich collection that offers the latest in the growing scholarship on drone warfare.The book casts a wide net in terms of subject matter. One wonders how, even with the obvious interrelationship between its sections, the editors can keep the volume from reading like a piecemeal collection. But the book benefits from a shrewd organizational choice – each of the book's four sections begins with brief personal narrative accounts – and these help the book to hang together well.These first-person descriptions of drone warfare range from the perspective of civilians on the ground to the experience of drone operators themselves. Journalist David Rohde authors the book's leading chapter, where he gives an account of his time as an imprisoned abductee under the control of the Taliban in the Tribal Regions of Pakistan; parts two and three of the book begin with stories from drone operators, and a particularly compelling chapter offers a glimpse of drones’ impact on a shopkeeper's life in North Waziristan, Pakistan. These views “from the ground” offer insightful glimpses inside the lives and minds of those who operate drones and those who feel the effects of their operation. While similar (and more detailed and in-depth) accounts of such experiences exist in the popular press and in the reports of NGOs and international organizations, the inclusion of these accounts is refreshing; too often academic discussions of drones can tend to be abstract and distant – the editors did well by reminding the reader of the human “face” that is impacted by drone use, drone policy, and the relationship between drones and international law.Moreover, part one of the book, “Drones on the Ground,” is one of the best collections of articles detailing the impacts that drones have on noncombatants. Drawing from the New America Foundation's (NAF) data set of drone strikes, Bergen and Rowland's chapter, “Decade of the Drone: Analyzing CIA Drone Attacks, Casualties, and Policy,” offers a detailed look at the “numbers.” But despite the good work that organizations like the NAF have done in compiling statistics such as the number of civilian casualties and the targeted killing of militants, the authors' conclusion that “what is needed is greater openness and transparency” is a stark reminder of just how nontransparent the US's drone program remains (31).This is a timely book, impressive in its breadth, with a notable collection of authors who range from former high-ranking US government officials and public policy specialists to academics and experts in international law. This book will appeal to those looking for a volume that addresses some of the major debates surrounding drone warfare as it is being carried out presently.

This is a very weak anthology of essays, most by American journalists. For the most part, it is an extended rehash of work by the New America Foundation. Of several studies of drone warfare (especially Stanford/NYU's and The Bureau of Investigative Journalism's), the New America Foundation's is by far the most friendly to the US. Co-editor Peter Bergen and contributor Jennifer Rowland co-author an atrociously bad essay that might as well have been written by the Obama administration. David Rohde and Sarah Holewinski provide decent essays. Most of the material has been better explored in other books (e.g., by Scott Horton, Jane Mayer, Jeremy Scahill, and Andrew Cockburn) and in The New Yorker, The Guardian, and The Intercept. Scholars like Georgetown law professor David Cole and Andrew Bacevich, among others, have also examined the issue. There is a lot out there. The catch is you may have to do some work to find it. But this book doesn't do the work.There is absolutely nothing that merits publication by a major university press. There is no evidence at all of peer review. The book is riddled with significant omissions. For example, Bergen and Rowland show no awareness at all of major studies that preceded the book. That's an enormous issue when some of those studies directly undermine claims the authors make. In a similar vein, there is little awareness in evidence of the history of high-technology warfare, which precedes the war in Vietnam by decades.All in all, one of the worst books I've personally seen come out of the Cambridge University Press. Two stars instead of one only because there are a few essays that are worth reading.

These books are okay. They are easy for my first and second graders to read, who are just transitioning into chapter books. The characters are easy to keep track of, and there are both a boy and a girl, so it is gender neutral. I also like that the stories teach us something, and can be used with the corresponding nonfiction "fact tracker" series to learn about all sorts of interesting creatures and/or historical events.That being said, I do have a few qualms. First of all, I strongly agree with the reviewers that criticized the author/editor for letting these books be published with so many grammatical errors! Children learn by example, and reading incomplete sentences, misspelled words, proper nouns that are not capitalized, and loosely structured paragraphs makes it hard to teach proper mechanics. These books could have been phenomenal if not for the poor grammar!.....I myself debated on whether or not to use these for a while, and then decided that that I could use the errors as a jumping off point to teach some basic rules of grammar. Each day I put a couple of selections out of the book on the board, and asked the kids to fix it. We worked on ways to improve the writing, but honestly, it was a lot of extra work! I would have rather had the grammar be correct in the beginning, and then I would have been able to use the book as an example of good sentence structure.Also, I may be old fashioned (even though I'm young), but I do not like some of the ways that the characters respond to each other, such as by saying, "Oh, don't be stupid" and things like that. I know kids talk to each other this way, but I want to build an atmosphere of mutual respect, and some things just kind of hit me as bad examples, even if I am being a bit too picky.Honestly, I would say that I my kiddos and I enjoyed the companion Fact Tracker books a lot more than the actual Magic Tree House ones. The grammar isn't perfect, but it is a lot better, and the paragraphs are more clearly defined, so I didn't feel the need to 'correct' it for them. Since the books are nonfiction, they also fit nicely into science and history lessons, and you don't need to read the Magic Tree House books first!In addition, I would recommend the Boxcar Children series--although these may seem a little daunting for some beginning readers to read all on their own. The chapters are a little longer and there are more words on a page, but the adventures are just an interesting, the grammar is correct, and the characters are good role models. I only wish that there were 'fact tracker' books to go along with THAT set!In conclusion, like many other reviewers have said, these are "great books, but poorly written." I have heard that the books farther on in the series are better, and I hope that this is true...but I don't know if we will continue on to find out.

I really can't recommend this series enough. Buy this book for child. Now. Click the button.We recently started reading chapter books for our nearly 5 year old son. We bought a few different ones to see what he'd like. We bought and read the first of My Father's Dragon and The Littles. He liked them OK. My wife and I didn't like My Father's Dragon so much because it seems quite dated. The Littles was OK but was rather violent for a kid his age. But the Magic Tree house series is in a word ... magical. My son can't wait for us to read several chapters at bed time and always asks for one more no matter how many we read. I think we are already on book 10 now. It will be sad when we finally finish the last one.What's so great about these books is that they combine adventure with learning about so many different things ... history, other cultures, geography, animals, and so on. My wife and I also appreciate that the books are about a boy and a girl, not just a boy going on the adventures. The girl is brave and somewhat impulsive, and the boy is more hesitant and cerebral. Together, they make a great team. They also aren't simply exploring. For each book, they have some sort of mission, such as figuring out a riddle or finding a certain object, so there's some sort of puzzle element to the books that spurs thinking. Generally, the missions are part of a larger mission that spans several books as well. What more can you ask for as a parent? These books are fun and engaging for our son, teach him about lots of different things, and encourage him to think abstractly about what's happening in the story. Thank you Mary Pope Osborne!

My son is in love with this book and is asking for more! I'm so excited to get him interested in his first chapter books and enjoy the quality time we spend together while reading. This is a great book for early readers and I find it useful in honing listening skills. My son just turned 5 and the writing and short chapters hold his attention. We could read the book in a sitting and he doesn't lose interest. Very excited to check out the others in the series.

My four-year-old was a very early reader, and this was the first set of "big girl books" that actually interested her. While she is a wonderful reader, she is still young, and many chapter books are conceptually too advanced to be of interest to younger children. She is completely engrossed by the Magic Treehouse series and squealed "More Mary Pope Osborne books!" when I gave her her last set. Every once in a while there is a "scary bit" that we need to discuss briefly, but on the whole, it's a safe choice for the youngest of independent readers. Be careful, though - once they're hooked on the first set, they want ALL the books!

Our five-year old loves listening to these stories. We read them over the course of a couple of days (although he does not want to stop reading). Some parts are a little scary for our five-year old (the ninja book), but he is grasping many of the concepts and plots. I find the books a bit repetitive and hackneyed, but they are not for me. The series is about a brother and sister who live in Frog Creek, PA. They discover a treehouse in the woods near their house. The treehouse is filled with books. The treehouse takes them to the places in the books. Jack is older and more cautious. He likes to read the books. Annie is impetuous and always running ahead. Jack and Annie get to learn a little bit (and so do we) about the times and places they visit.

Such a delightful, fun and informative book. There are so many alphabet books for children, but this is the only one I've seen with chickens! I love the idea of educating children (and adults like me!) about chickens so we know that there are many varieties. The chicken illustrations are lively charming and each chicken type tells what country the chicken is from and other interesting info..I would recommend this book to parents, but also to adults!

I gave this book as a Christmas gift but we read it together and both enjoyed it immensely.

Beautifully illustrated and I love the SIZE of the book! It is a coffee table work of art for my country home in Texas, where chickens are a decorating MUST!! I never knew the actual names of the different chickens or who laid blue eggs, green, brown or white eggs. I love the fluffy Silkie! Enjoyed the art and love having it as a part of my Chicken Decor!

A lovely book, wonderful illustrations of chicken breeds. A book I like to look at because it is so pretty.

I admit, as a mom of two boys and a pediatrician, I'm a tough sell... But I think I might love this book as much as my boys! It is so creative, the art is very engaging and kids of all ages (and their old parents, too) will learn more about chickens than you ever knew possible! ( for example, who knew there was an Iowa Chicken????)So well done, a book you can keep for generations!

Received my book this week. What a delight to see beautiful painted illustrations of so many chickens I didn't know existed. The author / illustrator truly shows that she researched her subject matter. This is a book that people who have chickens, think they want chickens, or just like lovely illustrated books should have in their personal library. I can see children enjoying and learning from this book as well.

It is about a number of things that run parallel and seem unrelated, until Williams pulls together all of the threads to present readers with a gorgeous narrative fabric. She lets readers see the stitching, so anyone who thinks that a writer’s work should be both seamless and invisible will not find what they’re looking for here.Williams chronicles the year that the Great Salt Lake threatened to overflow its banks, which would have caused enormous damage to the bird sanctuaries along its shores. Each chapter is named after a different bird that frequents Great Salt Lake’s ecosystem, and alternating chapters detail what is happening in the environment.The other chapters are about Williams’ mother and grandmother, both of whom develop reproductive cancers in the time she is writing about. As Mormons, the women in her family have been raised to put family first, and to assume certain positions both within their families and their church, but to not overstep their bounds. As the impact of the cancers changes the structure of Williams’ family, she writes about how these changes create new roles and lead for a need for a refuge for this “clan of one-breasted women.”As she documents, the lake’s overflowing boundaries, the reproductive cancers, and the way that land in the West has been treated by the U.S. government since its colonization by settlers and the destruction of those indigenous peoples who had inhabited it, are all connected. She shows readers the historical evidence, and as a naturalist, she writes with great authority about what is happening to the land.For some reason, certain readers are offended by this book. But if the idea that women are equal, as citizens and as human beings, is NOT an issue for you, this book is the story of revelation. If you think women are inferior beings, you’ll have to decide whether you’re willing to read a book that might challenge your views.

Read this 15 years ago and just bought for a friend and reread parts. Interesting to read some of the negative reviews as this book has no negatives to it. I have given a couple copies to family members of dying patients over the years with great results. You don't have to be dying or have a dying friend to love this. It transposes nature and its cycles with human life and death in a way no other book has done. It is certainly not a book that is a page turner with an evolving plot. It is a book to be savored and reread, something like The Outermost House, quietly read and felt, and it is in that lofty a category.

I first read this book after a dear friend passed away from ALS. It's such a humanistic story, and yet a story of Planet Earth and the ecosystem and our place, as human beings, in the order of nature.Yes, the author is Mormon, but she isn't preaching her religion. Rather, she takes a nondenominational and spiritual approach. Her love of nature and wildlife shines through the book, and I related to her analogies about the shrinking wetlands and loss of wildlife habitat.I found this book profoundly moving, and when my sister-in-law's mother was diagnosed with cancer, I bought it for her.I can't recommend this book highly enough. It can be comforting to those who fear illness, and also to those who seek a greater understanding of spirituality and the natural world.

This is a remarkable book, and well deserves its reputation. Williams juxtaposes her mother’s death by cancer with a dying wildlife refuge as the Great Salt Lake floods. While doing so, she manages to play the characteristics of specific bird species against what is going on in her family’s lives. It could easily be done poorly - but oh! she can write.It’s a hard book, especially if you’ve watched someone die slowly. But it’s a beautiful book, too.

I read this book for a class but connected to it strongly. I gave it as a gift to my mother in the hope it may be interesting to her in the aftermath of similar life situations to Williams.

Gut wrenching and emotionally evocative book. Beautifully written narrative weaves stories of nature with the overall plot.

This book was incredible. I read it as part of a university course and it's still on my shelf. Wonderful story of dealing with loss. I recommend this book to everyone!

This is one of the most beautiful stories I have read to date. The way Terry Tempest Williams describes nature, her emotions, and her mother's cancer is breathtaking.

Personal details - Marjorie's abandon behind the wheel of her cream-colored Oldsmobile, her boiled egg for breakfast, her shoe size, and her penchant for wearing mismatched ankle socks - accompany accounts of visits from Julia Scribner and Zora Neale Hurston, of Marjorie's unconventional marriage to Norton Baskin, and of their moves back and forth from Cross Creek to St. Augustine, Florida, and to Van Hornesville, New York. Idella describes Marjorie's work habits on the porch at Cross Creek - as time went by, she notes, a whiskey bottle, wrapped in a paper bag, often sat alongside the typewriter. By turns kind and generous, moody and depressed, Rawlings emerges as a woman of contrasts - someone "with few friends and many visitors . . . who seldom smiled". I always liked the story "The Yearling" having first seeing the movie based on Marjorie Kinnian Rawlings novel when I was a child and many times since. I came to read the novel while in high school.A few years ago, I moved to Central Florida in an area roughly an hour and half south of where Rawlings came to live for many years at Cross Creek, Florida, a place that she wrote an award winning autobiographical account of her time at Cross Creek, writing about the way she saw and came to experience this place.I often go up to that area, which is actually much like it was in the time that she set "The Yearling" and wrote about when she lived there.I have recently finished reading Cross Creek and now am volunteering at MKR's "homestead" which is a Florida State Park, mostly being part of a team of people who cook food, in Rawling's kitchen, on the wood fired stove she and Idella Parker used to prepare meals.To get a clearer picture of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, when I learned of this book, written by Rawling's long time cook, I had to get myself a copy.While Rawlings did seem to like the blacks that were around her and generally treated them pretty well, she still retained the views and ways that common to white people of the time, which to say---contains a more than a small dose of racism.There was much to be admired in Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, to be sure--but that she did have a racist strain, something not so admirable about MKR and Idella Parker made clear in this book.From reading this book, Idella Parker surely had many qualities that also deserved admiration and respect.From my understanding of the book, Parker did not actually do the writing. The true author put the book together in collaboration with Mrs. Parker, pulling together a series of interviews done over the course of several years, but that does not diminish the value of this book for it does help provide a more complete understanding of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, by providing a different perspective of this woman and the time and place she wrote and filling some pieces to a puzzle that MKR could not or would not provide....

I re-discovered Marjorie Rawlings while on a trip to Florida last summer. She was a difficult, complicated personality as this memoir by her long-standing (and long-suffering) maid attests. In Jim Crow South, employment opportunities were limited even for a well-educated and extremely intelligent woman like Idella Parker, so she turned to domestic work. Her recollections, warm, generous although occasionally acerbic, give modern readers a picture of the often strained, ambiguous relationships between white and black women in that time and place. One story that I will never forget is Parker's description of a visit from celebrated writer Zora Neal Hurston to Rawling's home, who, after being wined and dined by the hostess, was forced to retire for the night in the "maid's quarters" even though Rawlings had a couple of spare guestrooms. It is impossible not to finish this book without developing considerable admiration for Parker's poise and fortitude.

I loved this book. Idella greatly fleshes out and explains many of the indcidents in Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings "Cross Creek" while adding her own perspectives that dovetail perfectly. Idella helps us have just a taste of what it meant to be a black housemaid in the South in the early 1930s. Especially insightful are the glimpses into the racism she endure from the white people she served- all along having to smile and remain silent. Idella was a proud and intelligent woman, who in one anecdote, told how she refused to mend Mrs. Rawlings's dress on her one day off- Sunday- a day that she always included church and socializing with friends.My dad's uncle, Fred Tompkins, was a good friend of Marjorie Rawlings, and he is mentioned several times in her books- so I have a great interest in them.

I am African American and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings is one of my favorite authors. I loved Cross Creek and she is an excellent writer. However, I had to understand the times in which this book was written also I had to overlook demeaning remarks. If you can look pass these occasional remarks and see the dignity assigned to Martha Pickens and old Will, see the difference between truths and prejudices, relate to the author's life, you will enjoy Cross Creek. NOW, read Idella: Marjorie Rawlings' Perfect Maid and you won't be able to put it down. Miss Idella was a woman of her times and I felt I was reading about the lives of my grandmother, great grandmother and aunts. She gave me pieces of history left out by my relatives. I use to love for them to talk about their lives and the history and legacy given to me by them is priceless. Miss Idella wrote/told her story well and gave me a perspective I could relate to 100 percent. A must read!--full of pictures of her and her lovely family :)

This is the story of Idella's life, not only the ten years (1940-1950) she was Marjorie Rawlings' maid but also brief sketches of her life before and after those years. It is a very interesting read of an African American woman's view of life in the pre civil rights era. During the years Idella was her maid Mrs. Rawlings was sued by her best friend in Cross Creek (who is never mentioned in Idella's book) and the movie The Yearling was filmed and released, yet Idella tells us nothing about these events or how much Mrs. Rawlings was affected by them. In the preface she says she visits the Rawlings house in Cross Creek but it "does not fill me with longing for the 'good old days.' It stands as a reminder to me of how far we have come from those days of hard work and segregation." It presents an interesting angle from which to view part of Marjorie Rawling's life, but this is Idella's story.

Great read, Ms Parker, really brings the past to life in her book, and it makes you feel you are right there with her, thru the good and bad times.

I was able to tour Marjorie Rawlings home and was fascinated by this woman. Returned home and started readingher books and love them.

Doesn't give any more insight into writing than the MILLIONS of guides online like Purdue Owl. I guess the UCs have some shareholders in the publishing House or something. Waste of time

Digital copy is garbage. Sets of blank pages and duplicate pages throughout. Also over 7000 page "locations". It's a confusing and useless mess. I needed this for my English class but was unable to complete assigned readings due to the poor structure of this Kindle version. I have already ordered the paperback hard copy. Overall this was really inconvenient.

Had to get this book for a writing class I’m taking in college.

I'm very disappointed. I bought the book NEW. And I just received the book with a tape right across the book! I've never had any problems with Amazon before.

I bought this as it was a required textbook for my college English course and it has been a complete nightmare. The formatting is completely messed up, it says there are 7000 pages! When navigating the book you will find groups of at least 20 blank pages as well as groups of duplicate pages. Whoever edited the digital version of this book is not doing their job, complete waste of money.

Great to have this material online available for everyone with an amazon account. Great book too, a d really helpful

This book makes you think. Unfortunately, if you truly open your eyes, you see the findings that this book reports on played out every day. The book is well researched and fact based. It is quite troubling and disturbing.

I borrowed this from the library, as I am writing a thesis on sharia and international human rights law. My review is for those seeking substantive information on these topics.In short: The book is essentially a compilation of news clippings followed by more news clippings organized by country. These are sandwiched between recent Western concessions to Islamic demands for limits on personal freedoms. If you read the news, you know half the stories in this book. Google the keywords and you'll come up with a nice wiki article of recent cases and major players in the Sharia debates.Details: While this book endeavors to deliver an important message to naïve Westerners (e.g., Ben Affleck), it unfortunately falls really short: 1) It reads like an extended op. ed. - Marshall provides no data to support his claims that millions of Muslims and non-Muslims are killed/ tortured/ imprisoned/ forced to flee their countries due to violent mobs of sharia-enforcing vigilantes. 2) The dated news stories suggest Marshall had trouble finding cases to fit his narrative. His argument, however, indicates he should have had a plethora of recent cases from which to choose. I understand this book was published in 2011, but the examples are from the 90's up to 2006. 3) Redundancy renders the book about twice as long as it needs to be.I am terribly bummed, as this is such an important issue. Silenced just does not deliver the information Westerners will heed.

This is a brief comment on the design of the book cover only. What is the name of this book? It is of course "Silenced: How apostasy & blasphemy codes are choking freedom worldwide." But on first glance, one might (and in fact I did) think that the title is "How apostasy & blasphemy codes are Silenced choking freedom worldwide" -- which would seem to be practically the opposite of the meaning the authors wanted to give. If I were them, I would fire their book designer and hope for a second edition. It would be so easy to move "silenced" to the top of the cover, above the subtitle.I rated this book 5 stars because I had to pick something to submit the review. In fact, I have not read it, but I certainly won't judge it by its cover.

My enthusiasm over the book is less than it should be because I find it difficult to feel positive energy over so grim a subject. The direct and indirect results of blasphemy law crept in as regulation of hate speech or of insult or denegration form an awful challenge to free speech. It seems clear from the bulk of the material in this book those who say they only seek to address excesses of free speech intend to do so by ultimately cutting its throat. The need for citizens to be alert in defense of both free speech and separation of church/state are vital if the Western World is to remain vibrant and progressive.
