This is something of a classic in the field and is very widely referred to. Since I collect vintage southwestern jewelery, the historical section were of the most interest to me. It is pleasant to read and has great photographs.The author provides much helpful information on the changes in jewelry making technique over the last 50 years.

In its genre, this book is second only to Jay Foonberg's "How to Start and Build a Law Practice." I generally dislike reviews that focus too much on other products. But I am violating my own standard here because Foonberg is the Plato of the law firm startup sphere. All subsequent law firm "startup" books stand in his shadow. It has influenced a couple generations of lawyers since it was first published in 1976. It has been highly recommended to me by lawyers in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s. Such is the reach of this book. So how does Elefant measure up?Extremely well. The book feels much more modern. While Foonberg's has gone through multiple editions and updates over the years, some of the advice feels dated. Elefant also delves into greater detail in her explanations-her chapters feel complete, whereas Foonberg's book is basically a series of brief essays sorted by categories. She spends a far greater amount of time treating the issue of going solo straight out of law school, marketing, and the nitty gritty of actually launching your new practice, which I found to be lacking in Foonberg's book.Overall I think this book functions much better as a "how to" guide, while Foonberg's is great to have around as a reference manual. If you're looking for a third book in the genre, I would recommend Brian Tannebaum's "The Practice: Brutal Truths About Lawyers and Lawyering." Anything beyond that I would check out of the library instead of purchasing.A few words about the Kindle edition-the typesetting is very poor on some pages. Also some spelling mistakes. I don't feel like docking a star for that, but be warned.

I, many people did, found this book to be more relevant in today's market then "How to start & Build a Law Practice" although that is a great book as well.

Must read before stating a solo practice. More informative than Foonberg's guide.

I am at the beginning of the process of starting a firm, and this read was invaluable. Not only for the information she provides, but also for the countless resources she made me aware of outside of her own book.

This book was so inspiring telling of the life a man who was bullied as a child, lived in rural Ireland tending sheep and dreaming of the day he would be able to heal animals. Through years of studying, hard work, and many animal experiences he broke through to become the Supervet. He has created many prosthetic devices for small animal injuries as well as developing hardware for elbows, knees, and hips. He brings love to the world of both animal and human developing the concept of One Medicine to use his creations in both animals and humans. Incredible story and man.

If you’re looking for a blockbuster, you won’t find it here. That said, if you like reading a story in diary form then you’ll be fine.Noel does his best with his memoir but the writing failed to arrest me. It simply rolled out chapters of his life as he strove to become the vet he is today. And he’s no ordinary vet, I’ll admit. He is obsessed and sacrificial to the point of all else. As such, he has no family of his own, his life is wedded to his practice and, quizzically, finds the need to declare that he’s not gay. I find his recollections of early life terribly sad (and typically Irish) and find it no surprise that he is what he is today: a broken product of that childhood. I haven’t seen his tv shows or any of his acting gigs but I suspect that this book was a bestseller in the UK because of that.

Fitzpatrick describes himself as a vainglorious and self-obsessed super-hero who craves the spotlight. He says you can do anything if it is your passion, yet although he whines about his failure to find a satisfactory relationship, he can't seem to launch the effort to have one. Along the way, he breaks more one heart in his incessant search for recognition and applause. The real hero in the book is Helena--I hope she now realizes what a lucky escape she had. His head is full of fantasies. Give me Dr. Jeff (Rocky Mtn. Vet), anytime over this fellow. But do read this, if you're interested in seeing the real person behind the mask. Anyone want my copy of the book?

Noel , if you are reading this and I hope you do, your book is breath taking and inspiring. However, personal I would like to say to you, how very sorry I am that you spent 50 years of your life, rescuing those two lambs. You have rescued them times over.I cannot express how much it saddened me to see this deeply emotional broken man underneath the medical genius.So happy to read, that you finally took time off of the practice. You have arrived where you need to be! You solved the puzzle of life: why is so much more important then the how. Congratulation, Noel. You have made it. I hope your life brings you only love and happiness from now on!

I liked how he wrote about his growing up simply and with love. Its something he reminds us about, and how important it is to all of us.

I love Professor Fitzpatrick' s story. He took the pain of extreme bullying and turned it into something extraordinary. I love this man and what he has accomplished and what he does everyday to make this world a better place.

I have watched Noel Fitzpatrick on television since his days on the BBC as The Bionic Vet. Of course, now he is better known as The Supervet, star of the Channel Four programme that has been shown on prime time tv for years.From what I have seen about Noel, he really is someone very special, his dedication is clearly evident, as is his genuine love of animals, and the fact that he loves hugs.I have often wondered about who he is, the man behind the vet. What drives him to work more hours in the day than is healthy? There has never been any mention of relationships or even friends outside the vet practice, but surely there must be some life outside of it? And why does he hug pretty much everyone that he meets?Listening To The Animals answers all of those questions. Growing up on an Irish farm was clearly tough and taught Noel some valuable lessons about hard work, although I think that most people will agree that the hours that he puts in are not healthy. The bullying that he suffered was heartbreaking to read, how lonely and isolated he felt as a little boy with only a farm dog to talk to about his worries. I loved how he knew from so early on that he wanted to be a vet and my goodness I’m not sure that I’ve ever heard of anyone working harder than he did to reach his goal. Serious respect to the man, whatever you may think of him, he is someone that will not be beaten and if one way of reaching his goal doesn’t work then he will find another way. Some of his stories were hilarious and had me chuckling away as I read.I enjoyed reading about some of his hobbies that he loved and learnt from, although all fell to the wayside as work took over his life. And we also heard about relationships, here he was very honest with us, I’m not sure that I really needed to know how old he was when he lost his virginity, but it was an interesting chapter.I also had no idea what went into building his practice, both in sweat and tears, but also money and debt. I told someone that I had read the book and the only thing that they said was ‘He must be so rich.’ I may have thought the same, but now I know better. He is not in the job for the money, it really is all about the animals.He talked a lot about his love of Kiera, a little dog that he shares with a vet nurse because he is aware that his lifestyle is not one that would be fair for a dog. The relationship between man and their dog is a complex one, one that I think is often dismissed by people who have never had a dog and even some who have, but what makes Noel such an amazing vet is that he totally understands this. In fact, I think that he has a better understanding of that love and connection and how important it is than most people. I have a dog and I’ve been lucky enough to have had two other dogs who sadly died from old age, all three were part of my family but I am sure that I could not articulate the depth of the feeling that I have or have had for my dogs as well as Noel has.At the time of writing the book, it appeared that Noel was single, I’ve always had a bit of a ‘thing’ for him, so if you’re reading this Noel and fancy meeting up then do get in touch!

I love all of Noels TV shows and anxiously awaited the release of his book. I couldn't put it down and was again reminded what an amazing man he is. He has dedicated his life to animals and reading about his early life and hunger for knowledge was truly inspiring. A knighthood surely awaits this incredibly humble Irishman.

He shared how the first salespersons were order takers and in today's market education based marketing where sales people educate is the right approach.He suggests that by focusing on your customers first (novel concept) instead of yourself (think ego and pocketbook) you as a sales professional will actually realize more dollars in your piggybank and truly be The Red Jacket in a sea of gray suits.Since the sales team needs to change, the sales training must also follow suite. Charan recommends using an apprenticeship approach is one concept as well as communicating success and measuring progress. This last two ideas are not knew, but so few companies take these to heart and practice.Even though this is a small book dimensionally with small type, there is a lot of new information. You will need to invest some time because some of his ideas may be foreign to you or may create a "this won't work attitude."

This book has taken a basic Sales Class and provided new terminology to old techniques with really nothing new at all. To go out and find a few companies that were using the wrong tactics and then turned it around using the right tactics is not a new miracle cure for the industry. Their main theme called "Value Creation Selling" has been around for many decades. The book is not wrong in what it is teaching but it is stuff that I learned under a different title many years ago. Not quite up to Dale Carnegie standards. Your money would be better spent on a book called "How to Win Friends and Influence People". This is not a waste of time but is really nothing new.

Magnus Nilsson is the head chef of Fäviken Magasinet restaurant in Sweden. Uffda. I think a lot of the low-star reviewers are getting it wrong because of a misguided expectation for what this book is. It is a chronicle of the wide range of what and how people of the Nordic countries eat, with really beautiful and simple photography. It is not a splashy cookbook from a Food Network television star. It is clear that the author is not shooting for a mass American audience. He's focused on chronicling a true representation of the subject, not recreating classics to appeal to American tastes.Some reviewers are calling out that this book is not inspiring (I strongly disagree, read the Pastries chapter and tell me you aren't surrounded by the warmth of cardamom and cinnamon), but I believe what they are getting at is the strength of the book. He doesn't care if the recipes make our mouths water. He cares that what he writes is true.There are several recipes the author does not even like, but he still includes because they are representative of what people from the Nordic countries eat and like. This furthers my opinion of this being primarily a journalistic work, versus a traditional cookbook, as he prioritizes the truth over an attempt to sell.If you want to be inspired to reach new limits in the kitchen, reach elsewhere. If you want to be come truly educated on this subject, dig in. It is an important work. Well done, Mr. Nilsson. I made the cinnamon buns on Sunday and they were fantastic.

Magnus is a real inspiration of mine. I watch anything I can find on this guy, love his ideas about food and culture. This book is huge...like make your bookshelf wobble huge. I haven't had much of a chance to dive in because I'm just finishing up his other book Faviken, which you should buy now, stop reading this and go buy The Nordic Cookbook and Faviken...now!, Well, well worth every penny,..pennies I spent. This guy spent a year or more researching and writing a cookbook with not even one of his own recipes in this book, that's dedication to the craft my friends.

What a beautiful and rare book. I had seen the documentary about Magnus Nilsson and have always been intrigued by Nordic culture and cuisine. This is the kind of cook book you want to sit down with along with a cup of tea and look through it leisurely. The photos are exquisite. And if you like food and cuisine as a point of entry to culture Magnus is a wonderful guide. It's a labor of love. Whether you cook or not, it's fascinating and beautifully done.

I intend to be using this book all the days of my life. It has a zillion recipes, and plenty of them with a lot of opinion. I like the opinions too. There's not a lot of showboating dishes here. It intends, and succeeds, in projecting the culinary traditions of the Nordic countries as they are, not how they might be if they were part of a television program.

This is a wondrously huge cookbook. It's not just a collection of recipes but it's also glimpses into Nordic culture and its food history--through photos, chapter prefaces, and recipe background info.While a small portion of the recipes do call for exotic meats not common in other worlds, many of them can be substituted for other meats. Like the section for Game, the bird in question can be substituted for common quail, Cornish game hen, etc. Of course the exact result may differ, but you can still get a taste of the spirit of the dish and get a unique experience out of it. And not to worry: there are also entire chapters dedicated to the common meats, like beef, pork, and seafood.The recipes are not overly complex--they don't call for perfect mastery of intricate techniques or fancy tools and equipment. They are humble dishes, but presented from a different perspective and palate than what we may be used to. Many dishes may feel so familiar to you already, but there is something different about it, like maybe it uses a completely different kind of sauce or flavor profile, so it's still approachable and not so exotic seeming that you could never cook it.I find this book great for getting new ideas for casual home cooking, especially since most recipes use common ingredients already. I especially like the sections covering recipes and history of drinks, jams, and condiments.I expect to use this book for many years, with many sticky bookmarks sticking out of it. The only con is that the book is never going to stand on a cookbook stand because it's so thick!

This is the book I could have, should have, would have written if I had the experience and depth of knowledge of Nordic cuisine that Magnus has. I have been translating, testing and modifying Swedish recipes for 40 years and find this book to be completely in line with what I already know plus it takes me way beyond what I did not know. If you want to whip a batch of meatballs for a social function this, or nearly any other Scandinavian cookbook will do the job. But if you really want to go in deep on the Nordic food culture you need this one. I have a collection of about 15 Swedish cookbooks and, as Magnus says in the introduction to his book, most of them suck. This one does not suck. Here you can find how to make falukorv or lutfisk from scratch, both recipes not found in any other book I have ever seen. The only negative comment I have is that the language is decidedly British and it can get confusing. It took me a while to figure out what pluck (lungs) were and I had to chuckle at rutabaga, called Swedes in England. So here is Magnus, a Swede, calling a rutabaga a Swede. Oh well.

This is such a beautiful book!! Gorgeous photos!! Very thorough collection of Norwegian recipes and traditional Scandinavian food! I gave this book to my dad for Christmas, since he is 1/2 Norwegian. Honestly, I had a hard time parting with it! But then on Christmas Day, I got this same book as a gift from my mother-in-law! How magical is that!!I am allergic to wheat and cows milk, so I haven't made many of the recipes. But we did really enjoy the hasselback potatoes! And even though I can't eat a lot of the recipes due to wheat/dairy, I still treasure this book in my collection! It brings up all the good feels of the love of my Norwegian grandmother.
