A nice guide to designing your own fabric to be printed by Spoonflower. The sample projects were very interesting and gave me some great ideas for my projects. The recipe card tea towels are a particularly great idea if you happen to have something written out by a beloved cook in your life. So many derivations from that simple idea have been teeming in my mind. My family had better watch out next Christmas! As for the instructional quality. I'm a graphic design and prepress professional who has done a fair amount of training newbies over the years. The basic how-tos are detailed enough to get a beginner started without being overwhelming. This is a VERY good thing! If you've never done graphic design on computers, I suggest supplementing this book with a beginner-level how-to book for the software you happen to be using. (Those "For Dummies" books are a good start.)

As a dabbler in trying to design my own decorating and garment fabrics, I purchased this book to try and find my way around the process. To be fair, it has clear instruction on how to design fabrics using Photoshop, then transferring your art to their site for printing. My only beef with the book, is that there is way too much sameness in their print examples as they cater to the quilters with too many small, geometric and modern styles. There's an over-abundance of these cute, small, flat-looking quilter's prints with no dimension and no large repeat examples, no sophisticated dimensional florals as one would find in decorator fabrics, no engineered print examples that would be for garments, etc. all of which are my and probably many other's tastes and desires! I would also love to see a wandering vine for example, how it continues in repeat, etc.In sum, there is much good information in this book for the beginning print fabric designer of quilting fabrics, and simple geometric prints for a few other small project applications, but knowing and having seen what the capability of the digital printing machines is, there are a lack of variety in larger scale work to be printed. Perhaps a second edition with more variety would be in order for a more sophisticated taste! On a side note, I'd also like to see this company expand their silk choices and provide a silk satin fabric, as not everyone wants polyester!

_The Spoonflower Handbook_ is a do-it-yourself guide for designing fabric, wallpaper and gift wrap to be printed out using Spoonflower’s services, and some ideas of what can be done with such items purchased from Spoonflower (see bottom of review if you are not familiar with Spoonflower). Some of the book’s strengths are its upbeat tone, human touch, and encouragement for anyone who thinks “there’s no way I could do this.” The introduction has a brief history of how Spoonflower’s founders came up with the idea for their company and some of the challenges they’ve faced. There sections describing Spoonflower’s regular design contests and who enters them, and quotes from some of their designers on how to use color. There are thirty projects and all of them are written in an encouraging tone and designed to be something almost anyone could do with a relatively up-to-date computer, internet connection, and basic graphics software. Each project also shows multiple examples of what people have done in similar projects and how simple images or simple designs can be very stunning. There are tons and tons of pictures; if this was hardcover with glossy pages, it could almost pass as a coffee-table book.On the technical side this book will not make you an expert on anything. It’s written much more for the beginner to intermediate designer who wants to use digital printing services. There’s no information on hand-made printing techniques, such stamping, silk screening, batik, and so on.There is some information on different qualities of fabric, different standard widths, and how the type of fabric will affect the image printed on it, and typical uses for different types of fabric, but it’s just enough to get you comfortable to with ordering something for a project. There is a section on working with color and an image of Spoonflower’s color map, which is all the colors that can be individually specified for their printing process, and some examples of tools you can use to choose a colorway or coordinating colors. There is a section on repeating images and seamless repeats and how to create a tile to be used in one of the five different repeating patterns Spoonflower offers. Each of these topics has whole books devoted to them which go into much more detail, which is why I say Spoonflower’s book is good for someone who is a beginner to intermediate, but it will not make you an expert on any of the topics it covers. The table of contents is as follows: Introduction Part 1 1 How to Use This Book - Ready, Set, Get Inspired! 2 It Starts with the Surface 3 Dig Into Digital 4 Learn About Color 5 Get to Know Repeats Part 2 6 Raid the Junk Drawer - Design with Found Objects 7 Through the Viewfinder - Design with Photos 8 From Paint to Pixels - Design with Drawings, Paintings & Prints 9 Read All About It - Design with Words, Text & Layers 10 The World of Vectors - All-Digital Designs 11 No Repeats Necessary - Design Cut & Sew and Whole Cloth Appendix AcknowledgmentsFor its purpose, which is to inspire people to try their hand at uploading some designs to Spoonflower, and then hopefully buy some fabric or paper and use it for their own projects, this is a good book. However, I’m giving it four stars instead of five because there’s no list of suggested books for further reading if someone does want to dig deeper into any of the techniques or concepts for fabric and paper design, and there’s no index (grrrr). Also, bizarrely, all the publishing information - copyright, edition, date published, publisher, ISBN, etc. - is on the last page; I haven’t seen a book do that before.- - -(If you are not familiar with it, Spoonflower is a company that allows you to upload various types of digital files (.jpg, .jpeg, .png, .tif, .tiff, or .gif formats) and have the images printed out on various surfaces. At the time of writing of the book, that included quilting-weight fabrics, woven clothing-type fabrics, lightweight fabrics, heavyweight fabrics, knit fabrics, water-activated and peel-and-stick wallpaper, and gift wrap. There may be more materials available on their website too. Spoonflower’s fabrics are often more expensive than what you’d find in most fabric stores, but at the same time these are small-batch custom-printed fabrics, so some added expense is to be expected.)

This book takes you step by step through the fabric designing process for beginners. It also explains in detail what's involved and their printing process. Suggest you read it before beginning. Be aware having practical knowledge of Photoshop or other graphics software will assist you in your quest to try the design process. Spoonflower is also great about answering your questions and are VERY patient.

This book really helps to decide how to use the Spoonflower site to design fabric, gift-wrap and wall paper. It has helpful, basic design tips for the novice, such a the difference between vector graphics and rastor images, basic color theory, and understanding how to set up patterns to repeat. For those who don't know about fabric, there is even a chapter explaining basic concepts for designing fabric. Lastly, it includes some projects to get one started.

This workbook is excellent and clearly describes every aspect of textiles created by Spoonflower. From the simplest to most complex projects there is a step by step description of the process . Highly recommend it.

Very basic, was hoping for more advanced inspirational design instructions.

I really learned a lot about the printing and photoshop side of placement for printing on fabric. This book is geared toward Spoonflower but it is named that so I was not surprised. Good read for people new to fabric design
