For much of our life together, my wife and I have visited Joshua Tree National Park on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other off (hiking) season holidays. We take several short walks in the park, and then end the day at Desert Hot Springs soaking off the dust from a day of hiking. These days are as close to perfect as I can ask for.Joshua Tree offers lots of short (and some not so short) hikes and you can find most of them in this little book, now in its second edition, by Polly and Bill Cunningham. The book features 20 hikes ranging from a level, wheelchair accessible, .4 mile nature trail to a 9.6 mile excursion to Lost Palms Oasis. Most of the trips though are 1-3 miles long. The desert terrain and dry air make these walks a little more rugged than you might expect, but for the most part just about anyone can explore Joshua tree outside their cars and have a great time. There are many hiking guides to Joshua Tree, but this is as good as any and better than most for those planning casual walks during a short visit. In my experience, that is by far the best way to see the park.
The authors of this book have written many and of course, this one doesn't disappoint. Detailed listings of hikes and what to do and not to do while in Joshua Tree. Book details were spot on as we followed several hikes with no problems. Worth your purchase.
Great guide very helpful. Small size means it fits in a backpack. Use it in tandem with a full map of the park, which you get for free at the park entrance stations.
A great selection of trails in the park. Easy directions.
Concise and to the point. Very helpful. Not a hugely detailed book, but gives you enough info o decide what hike to take, how difficult it will be and key spots, places, to look for

Not much to say, this came in really handy when I went to Joshua tree - I was hiking along and the descriptions were very accurate so it was easy to plan my day.
