Still reading this book and still loving it. I am a wild scape gardener and this make one think very thoughtfully about the role of trees in our world.I had to take out three very old diseased trees to do my wild scape habitat for the birds, butterflies, insects, etc. and I planted 5 back, two oaks, one maple, one chokecherry, and one pinion pine. The one blue spruce that I was able to leave is in great shape.I highly recommend this for reading and thinking about how without trees, man cannot survive. We are intertwined together and depend on trees for survival.
What a great book. Jean Shinoda Bolen does an excellent job of connecting the dots between respect for trees and the survival of the planet. She, like many of us, is clearly a Tree Person.This book provides not only a basic understanding of the life processes of various species of trees, but also stories that enhance and enrich my understanding of what I've always felt about trees in general, and a special few in particular. I, like many others, had a special tree under which I sought solace as a child. As an adult trees help anchor me to the natural world, as well as the spiritual world. The author illuminates and validates the magnetic bond between trees and humans. And she clearly illustrates the urgency of protecting trees in order to preserve our place on this beautiful planet.The book was informative and delightfully readable.
Jean Shinoda Bolen gathers mythology and symbolism to understand current attitudes toward trees and approach the issues of trees, forestation and life on Earth. She puts disparate elements together for deeper und3erstanding. I gave copies of this book to three other tree-loving women friends.
I just started reading "Like a Tree" and already have my highlighter and pen out marking the passages I love. I have "Crones Don't Whine" and have purchased other copies to give to some of my "Crone" friends - I highly recommend that book also.
Just as trees have deep roots down into the earth, so must we be rooted and have a strong connection to the earth. We must respect trees and treat them kindly. They have served Mother Earth for millions of years by giving us protection from the hot sun. They are here for us to learn valuable lessons and just by sitting on the ground next to a tree we can receive a message if we listen carefully. Wrap your arms around a tree and feel its vibration as it appreciates the love we are showing it. In our lives we must stand tall like a tree. Feel firmly rooted in the ground and do not waver. Trees can be like people but please show respect for God's creation of trees is so glorious.
Beautifully written and insightful. I recommend that all women, and tree people, read this book. I really like how she compares trees of the world to the women of the world. As I fit in both categories, I found this book hard to put down.
