I have to say that I expected more from the book. It has great recipes, but I expected more techniques and more pictures. We have a lot of pictures of the author, him in action, his family etc. All good, but I really expected more step-by-step pictures from a Chef like him. And pictures of more relevant dishes. I know that's personal. But come on! There are some five new dishes without pictures, and then a picture of a burger? No pictures for a lot of exciting recipes and then a picture of grilled onions? Again in peaches after tons of unique desserts and sides with no picture? Or a picture of his beautiful wife (no complaints here) holding a cup of what seems to be his peach compote? Got to tell you, this is the kind of book that seems like the guy created the bulk of the recipes just for the book, and never really prepared them; or the editor did a poor job in deciding what dishes should have pictures, or a bad job in selecting them. That said, I have books without pictures, and I'm OK with it. But I expected this one to have more from the previews, from him being a big name and all. You may not have a problem with the things that I didn't like in the book. But be warned if you are looking for a book with pictures, step-by-step instructions with pictures and the likes. This is not this kind of book.

This book is different from most of the BBQ and grilling related cookbooks I have on my shelf. That's saying something when I look over the books I actually have here. When it comes to defining what makes it different, we have to take a look at Adam Perry Lang himself to help create this differentiation. I have books by Ray "Dr. BBQ" Lampe, Chris Lilly, Myron Mixon, Jamie Purviance, Steven Raichlen, and a host of other big guns in the world of barbecue and grilling. Each has its great stuff, but "Serious BBQ" is still different. I think the major difference that separates this book from the others is the author's approach to the food. Lang didn't grow up in a BBQ family. His interest in this topic came later in his life. When I read about Adam Perry Lang's background in cooking, I'd expect to see his book endeavors alongside the other fine food authors in the world of the culinary arts. Lang was educated at the Culinary Institute of America and began his career in the world of five-star dining. This is what makes his interest in barbecue and his approach to the food significantly different than those I'm used to seeing.In the opening sections of "Serious BBQ" Lang talks about the equipment, tools, ingredients, fuel, and a host of other materials needed to produce great barbecue. He also spends a little time talking about semantics, which I found refreshing. Yankee vs Southern BBQ! As a pure born and bred southern boy, I'm proud of my heritage but I'm also not in the least interested in arguing about the term "Barbecue" and what it means. It's all about the food that goes on the plate, and Lang's agreement with this is quite on spot. There is also an interesting section on dispelling myths about BBQ and grilling that is right on target. In my humble opinion, the most important part of the opening section of this book is the discussion of the meat itself. He does a great job of describing what defines specific cuts of meat. Understanding THAT is what helps you determine how it should be cooked. FAT and COLLAGEN. Understanding those two elements in a piece of meat will lead you to cooking success! Why do you cook a pork shoulder for a long time at a lower temperature? Why don't you cook a rib-eye the same way?The most interesting distinction that surfaces in this book is Adam Perry Lang's unique and outside-the-box approach to bringing flavor to the meat. All of the other BBQ and grilling books I have approach the preparation and seasoning of the meat in basically the same ways with the same classes of seasonings, rubs, and injections. Lang's fresh ideas on seasoning, marinating, brining and injecting have my complete attention right now and I plan to study his ideas in depth over the next several months with some experimental cooking of my own. A lot of his techniques of cooking the meats described in this book are quite opposite of some ideas we would normally consider to be perfect practices. Just the descriptions of these techniques and ingredients had my mouth watering.

He is obviously well trained, experienced, knowledgeable, and innovative. There is much here to digest. Overall a great book and lots to try. My negative is that he often has too much embellishment, too many layers of flavor, too much overthinking. He often just overdoes it. But he is so good that you can take away the basics and let the over-the-top stuff be left aside. He really, really is serious.

As advertised. Not a beginners guide. Outstanding recipes but it takes some extra steps over a typical recipe. ie, typical recipe might include a brine, dry rub, and glaze. But this results in restaurant quality meals you would be proud to serve guests.

Adam's charred and scruffed book was a solid 5 stars, this one goes over the same stuff like other books.Buy Adam's charred and scruffed for grilling since he really enters new territory of crust development not available on any other book.As far as barbecue, this one is fine but so are others (Aaron Frankling is one) that are better.The science chapter is a short Q&A, there is more in modernist cuisine sources or online.The recipes are awesome!

I have had this book for at least a year. Out the gate, I did make a number of recipes and sauces from it; but, have found that I no longer go back to it for inspiration. I liked the APL BBQ sauce, the chicken thigh recipe and the whimsy of using a rosemary brush to mop stuff (one of the more iconic photos floating around of this chef)... but, most of these recipes are lengthy, take dozens of ingredients, hours and hours of effort (before, during and after the cook) and ultimately don't make the difference between great BBQ and a waste of time. In the end, there are a lot of subtleties to these flavor profiles that my smoker just ends up overwhelming (shouldn't it be about the smoke). Is it worth the extra time, tedious menial effort and additional ingredients... you will have to determine that for yourself. This book has dishes that I will never try, dishes that I will only ever make once and dishes that can be simplified to leave you with time to visit with your friends. My go to reference book lately has been, Project Smoke.

Excellent for educating yourself on different techniques. My BF is an experienced griller but there was lots of things in here even he has never tried!

The peach glazed pork tenderloin recipe is worth the price of the book. So far I have cooked home runs out of this book.

This book was the first book I ever read. I haven't found one yet since that I completed in one day. Yes, it is a thin book but it was so awesome. I grew up in what I thought was an abusive home, had six step fathers, four step mothers, and moved 4 times in high school. I grew up bitter and angry at my parents for not giving me a stable environment. After reading this, I became appreciative for the life I had growing up. I may not have had the best home life but I had people in my life who helped me grow and were always watching out for me. "A Child called It" made me greatful for what I did have and it made me realize things I had growing up that I didn't even realize I had. I love it and plan on making my kids read it.

Once I started reading this book, I did not want to put it down. I am so grateful for having discovered, ' A Child Called It", as I was severely abused from the ages 5 to 17 years old. This book has started an inner healing process.As I started reading, I started crying, crying so loudly that I started wailing. Uncontrollable tears rolling down my cheeks, and many, many tissues. I applaud Dave Pelzer for using his torturous past to help bring healing to so many people. I can not wait to read his other books. If you can read this review Dave, I want to say Thank you, Thank you, and Thank you.

My brother suggested I read this and I see why. For my entire childhood I was abused physically and emotionally by my mother while the rest of the family acted like it was normal. Only now in adulthood do they see how entirely abnormal it was for one person to be singled out for one parent's hatred and wrath. This see story is so familiar to me in so many ways; many of the same scenarios played out in my childhood, although not to the horrible extremes that the author sustained. There isn't a day that my childhood doesn't haunt me in some way, but like the author, my strong inner spirit and will to survive triumphed. I will be reading the other books in this series.

As a social worker, no one likes to talk about these sorts of things. What makes child abuse different is how deeply it’s impact goes and how many people it impacts. It’s an evil no one wants to see or accept and many will look the other way. And then there are those who will not turn away and instead step in and risk pieces of them self to try and save a child. David tells his story in a raw way that leaves you saddened but inspired. It’s a hard read that you can’t put down. You almost “feel” what he’s going through. Beautifully and courageously written.

It is a good read, and I think it’s important for people to read this book, but proper warning must be given. This is a sever case of child abuse that is hard to stomach reading. I think because it’s so traumatic that it’s our duty to read the story so we may learn how to prevent child abuse.I first read this when I was young, in grade school myself. (as of writing this review I have reread it to give an account with a fresh memory in mind) I don’t know if this was the best book for a middle schooler to read. When I picked it up I understood the subject would be about abuse when I started, but I had no idea how graphic it would be.When I first read it this book always stuck with me, in a positive way. I knew child abuse was a thing but I had no idea how truly terrible it was. It was at the back of my mind. By the time I went to high school this book was still in my mind and I tried to be diligent about looking for potential signs in my classmates.Now as a young adult the book has always stayed with me in my mind. I often discuss politics and mention issues I find important to friends. Child abuse is heart breaking and when I have time I try to inform people about it.You could easily say this was a life changing book for me. The shock it gave me as a child was something i’ve kept with me for all of my life. It was a tool that changed they way I think and caused me to pursue more attention to the issues of child abuse, and specifically educating others.The book itself is short and a quick read. I finished it within a two hour sitting. If you can stomach it you’ll probably finish it in one sitting as well.

This book most certainly does its job on bringing awareness towards child abuse. This book is the account of one child's unthinkable abuse. It offered me great insight on a child's perspective as he goes from having a loving family environment to a victim of child brutality. This book offers much knowledge on how to escape that kind of life and that it is okay to be different and that you're not alone. Lastly, it shows that the impact his childhood had on his life was great enough to influence him into writing this book and bringing awareness.

It took me a long time to read the book. I had to put it away many, many times. My own life has so many similarities. In a different way, with different people, but the outcome is the same. And the struggle to survive is too. The daily struggle to regain your life and to believe you are worth something. That.Thanks Dave Pelzer, for your courage to put into words what you went through and in doing so helping people like me.

I read some of the book back in the 90s when I was in elementary school but honestly didn't remember much about it. This year, it was assigned as required reading for a paper in my Child Abuse and Neglect class, and my original book is in storage, so I went ahead and ordered a new one. It is a quick read and took me less than a day to finish. In my opinion, it is a good book. It is a very sad story, but unfortunately, it is also one that many people live on a daily basis. I enjoyed it enough where I went ahead and ordered the other books in the trilogy.

This book reminded me that this just doesn't happen in movies but real life too. I've appreciated my mother more. It's usually hard to make me cry but this book though.........i literally had to stop reading because i couldn't see anymore. It's greatly written. The author did a great job writing the book. He will make you feel like it was the kid himself telling the story and it felt like it was right from his diary. This has been a great read and also the second book.

I took a book study on this book that was required of all new teachers to the district. Despite having career prior to teaching and also teaching for 7 years, I was still required to take the class. I was sure that I wasn't going to learn much. However, I was pleasantly surprised on the knowledge gained from this book. It was easy to read with very practical examples. I began using some of the techniques learned in this books with one of my "trouble" classes and it really helped!

Had to buy it for a class but ended up finding it super helpful as a "veteran" teacher. Since I bought the ebook, I knew I wouldn't be getting a CD with resources. The publishers include a link so you can download them as pdfs! Not bad.

This book's usefulness hinges on your ability to make participation or behavior a component of your formal grading system. I cannot so this book's recommendations are of extremely limited use to me.

As a teacher, and a teacher of teachers, I find this kind of book invaluable because it it user friendly and accommodates any teaching style. Each chapter ends with blank usable pages on which you may try out the principles and strategies covered in that chapter.

I love how Dr. Spricks included all the worksheets he mentioned in the book. You can download them from the CD or use the code inside. This book will help me as we begin a new school year.

Great toolbox that covers every aspect of the classroom and provides great tools for the type of classroom and student faced by contemporary secondary educators.

This is a useful and easy to use resource. It provides many examples for different scenarios and is a wonderful refresher as I am heading into the coming school year. It has a binding that makes it easy to lay flat and make copies. I have not used the CD that accompanies the book yet, though.

Very well written, very informative. Less likely to get me sued than the classroom discipline methods used on me.

The early volumes of Deadly Class were wonderful tour-de-forces of teen angst, high school politics on roids, 80s nostalgia, culture clashes and a bit of the old ultra-violence. The early core characters Marcus, Maria and Saya were all fantastically conceived and expressed. As those characters have been seemingly killed (only to appear again many issues later), other characters stepped into the foreground or were introduced as the new Freshman class. None of the previous supporting characters or new Freshmen can measure up to that initial trio, so the storylines have ebbed the last few volumes. As another reviewer mentioned though, this new character building and development is work (at times tedious - the car scene in this volume was a BRUTAL read), but hopefully it will have a payoff (the end of this volume is pretty, pretty good).

I continue to enjoy this series. Fine artwork. Great arcs. Lots of mayhem and characters I care about. What's not to like? This. Somewhere in the middle of this volume, around when everybody's in the car, "Deadly Class" turns into "Breakfast Club." Suddenly we are treated to a bolus of passionate teen sharing about music, politics, personal history, morality, psychology, and on and on. Gosh, I couldn't wait for everyone to finish up and start killing each other again. Perhaps the purpose of this interlude was character development. I got nothing against character development. I've been known to use it myself. This, however, felt like a foreign body--maybe a hairball or a gallstone--that I needed to pass before I could regain my concentration. I'm looking forward to Volume 7.

The characters in this volume continue to be given so much depth, so much life that as a reader you can't help but become invested in their dealings and by the end you truly want to see what happens next.

Beyond that, there is absolutely nothing eccentric and graceful about this book which would probably have looked exactly the same in case she would have travelled Ghana or Egypt or China or what ever.Read this book in case you need warning about bringing toilet paper when visiting public toilets or in case you find a child leaving a turt on a busseat interesting reading ...Otherwise: Forget about this irritating rubbish and Get Philip Braggs's excellent "Guide to Ethiopia" for practical information and e.g. Kevin Rushby's highly acclaimed "Eating the flowers of paradise" ... and DO go and vitit Ethiopia !

There are far better books that can give you a perspective of these two countries. This author's work is nothing but an attempt propagating a prejudiced, if not condescending, view of Ethiopia. I find her outlook insulting and patronising to Ethiopians and Eritreans alike. It is like a poor attempt of a 90's travelogue Evelyn Waugh's style, as it is steeped in colonial hypocrisy and unabashedly patronising world view. A waste of my time, glad I didn't buy it, as I got it from a library.

If you can not go to these places yourself, it is fun to at least read about them. Loved it.
