This book was recommended to me by my marriage counselor. Both, my husband and I purchased the book and have been reading it at our leisure. It has helped me tremendously when my husband and I encounter conflict in our relationship and need to reach for different ways to approach our marital challenges. Today, both he and I are much more aware of how to deal with situations that create disharmony in our marriage. We are in our mid-fifties and are realizing we still have much to learn! I feel this book empowers the reader; it is not a panacea but a step in the right direction. I highly recommend it.

Gary Smalley led me to the Lord in 1995 through his book "Love is a Decision". I have always trusted him to point me back to God and healthy relationships. I read this book years ago when it was first released and it had a profound impact on my life. However, somehow I forgot the material and with many trials slid back into my old habits. I reread the book recently and thought "how long have I been living this way?" I highly recommend this book as well as "Guarding Your Child's Heart". Even if you don't have children, you will soon understand the book is talking to all of us as God's children.

I was first introduced to this book in a Sunday school class for women. Although not overtly Christian (with lots of Bible verses, etc. tossed out to justify the author's viewpoint), this book presents a lot of information that reinforces scripture. Most useful is the explanation of how we frequently engage in what Dr. Smalley calls the "fear dance"--reacting to one another's actions and words, based on how we perceive that they touch on our deepest anxieties about our relationships. Included in the book is a very helpful chart that clearly defines those fears. Once we understand what "fear buttons" we and our significant other possess, then we can learn to communicate and conduct ourselves in a way that prevents that counter-productive fear dance.I would recommend this book for couples, parents and young adults to help them understand the dynamics of their relationships. Great format for Sunday school classes and small groups. Good tool for pre-marital counseling, as well. There are helpful resources available for group leaders, counselors, facilitators and participants at the website referenced in the book.Wish I had learned this information sooner. I've heard testimonies of couples whose marriages have been transformed through the application of these principles. My husband and I have given copies away to newlyweds, engaged couples and individuals struggling in key relationships.

I've been a great fan of Gary's works designed to improve relationships. His works have always been inspiring, entertaining. He shows both humility and real clear, practical expertise.I think that the more we invite God into our lives and practice God's love, the smoother will be our relationships.This book is easy to read, is full of hope, accurately identifies problems, and presents practical solutions in clear to understand charts, graphs, and short stories.I've read much of Gary's previous works and watched the videotapes. Superb material that has been very helpful in marriage counseling. I'm not certain that, for those who've read previous works, if this presents new information other than serving as a method of informing couples in distress about the intensive marital counseling sessions.The title, "DNA of Relationships" is misleading to anyone who might think that this book is a de novo scientific based text. Its more of the same (which IS very good).Id have several brief monthly counseling sessions to be sure that the techniques are being applied correctly.If you read / viewed his works before, I didn't really uncover new gems. If this is your first introduction to these works, this book is just fine.

I hate being too extravagant...but this book seriously changed my life. It's one of those books that blows your mind and changes your perspective on everything. A totally new paradigm to view things through. It demands much maturity, but everyone will be capable of doing everything in this book if they can only swallow their pride. My only 2 cents...I wouldn't pick it up and plan to read any of it without committing to at least the first two chapters in the first sitting -- just my opinion. I'm a 24 y/o male and this book was vital in forgiving my girlfriend after infidelity.

It covers a multitude of life issues and how it came about and then helps to resolve what holds us back, in relationships. The most complete research done on people and their lives concerning relationships... A must get for people struggling in that area, especially marriages that have had baggage come up, that is trying to destroy what God brought together...

This is a refreshingly simple, intuitive book that helps us to cut through all the garbage that gets in the way of good relationships. It has been particularly helpful to me in managing a relationship with an angry moody husband who doesn't seem to want to try or consider other's ideas or advice. It has helped me to focus on optimizing my own behavior, strengthening my own faith, and seeking to appreciate what is good and special in others. When I finish reading, I'll probably read it again.

I have really used the main points in this book to better strained relationships, and have passed on the info I have learned. But the book is long winded. He tells so many stories to give examples. I just wanted him to get to the point. My husband stopped listening because he was getting frustrated with story after story. I stuck with it and did appreciate the knowledge. I think the actual book would have been more helpful, easier to jump over the example stories. and highlight the main points.

Finally, an updated book about freshwater pearls! I love Renee's pictures and thorough information on the different types of freshwater pearls. Most books are on the saltwater variety, which I love. Renee covers the typical info, but has the updates on freshwater pearls. The freshwater industry has ballooned and little information is available in concise form. What I also like is the inclusion on the recent fashion and technology involved - such as pearl carving and testing methods to determine treatments.

Every new book produced by Renee Newman is a visual and informational treat! Her books are exceptional - very well researched, organized and presented in terms which are easily understood by both the public as well as members of the trade. This new 3rd edition Gemstone Buying Guide is no exception, containing timely, updated information, including the addition of more unusual gemstones in the back as well as new helpful charts. This was well done but a little on the simple side for me. As a former jeweler I was looking for some in-depth information about some of the newer stones, such as color change Garnets, etc.The information appeared to be all 100% correct however it was not presented in much depth. Good if you're just getting started collecting gems, etc. Not so good if you have a lot of knowledge to begin with.I would rate this 3.75 to 4.0 stars out of 5. Recommended for anyone wanting more information and is just starting down the pathway of gem collecting, etc.

As one of three books purchased on this subject, I have to say the images are what makes this book. But the information within is great too, albeit somewhat limited on certain stones. With my geology background, I really enjoyed seeing the categories of gemstones classified in terms of: chemical composition, Moh's hardness scale rating, cleavage, crystal structure and more. The care tips are also useful particularly if you make jewelry and want your customers to be aware of how to properly care for their gemstones (or for you when cleaning your own gemstones!). Some gemstones have many varieties and this is covered quite well (e.g. Garnet - eight species and their names, varieties within species, color(s), and other mineralogical data that is useful to those who really want to understand the detailed identification of the mineral/gemstone. The accompanying photos often cover all the species listed - so a great visual aid. Keep in mind the images are of finished, mostly faceted gemstones. I want to also mention another great image/layout and it is about Jadeite colors as seen on 36 cabachons. I wanted to know about this for some time and now by using this guide, I can get a general sense as to how to determine quality and value of this particular stone.I would recommend this book for beginner gemstone enthusiasts, but recommend other books, publications, and even talking with a true gemologist to help you understand specific topics in detail. I will refer to this book probably first when seeking an answer on most gemstone questions but will utilize other information when I need an in-depth knowledge review prior to purchase and analysis.

I found this book fascinating! It is easy to read, easy to learn from, and yet not a text book. You do not have to be a student to become captivated by the beautiful photography and interesting bits of history mixed with scientific data and just a bit of folklore.At times I was frustrated by the elusiveness about what a particular gem would be worth. The author reminds us selling and trading of gems might well be, if not the second oldest profession, one of the early ones.I recommend this book to anybody. If you pick it up because of the bright colorful images, you will be caught by the flowing enthusiasm of the author. Many a night, my forehead hit the pages as I realized my reading had kept me up way too late.

This book was wonderfully in-depth, with excellent illustrations. It was obvious that a lot of research went into providing information that is not easily available many places. I'll be reading her other books as well.

Not enough information on determining the price, a great book for learning what they look for to determine price, but no actual pricing stucture.

I am extremely pleased with this anthology, which has several strengths:(1) It covers virtually the entire span of Christian times, beginning with Origen, whose writings date to the first half of the 3rd century AD, to Thomas Merton, whose writings date the 20th century. In total, 23 figures are represented, including some from outside the Catholic tradition. As such, the reader gets a good feel for how later thinkers built on or react against earlier schools of thought. This gives some value-added to the book, above and beyond the content of the selected writings it contains.(2) It is academically very solid. There are concise but still information-rich introductions to each author, which frame his/her thinking and offer a brief biographical sketch. Importantly, each and every one of the introductions is accompanied by a bibliography, which instills confidence that the editors have done their due diligence, gives the reader the chance to double check what the editors' claims (if so motivated), and offers avenues for further reading and study.(3) The selected writings themselves are very rewarding. Despite the need to pick relatively short entries to fit the limits of a single volume, I felt that every selection was substantive enough to meaningfully communicate some aspects of each figure's theology and philosophy.(4) I'll repeat a point the previous reviewer made, because I think it is important. The writers eschewed (correctly, in my view) the position that mysticism represents some sort of fundamental essence of religions ("perennial philophy"). One great benefit of this approach is that the volume gives a very good sense of each writers' position within the Christian tradition, thereby communicating (in an admittedly limited way, due to the inherent limitations of an anthology) the writers' contributions to the development of Christian thought. This is quite useful for anyone interested in the development of doctrine or in the history of Christianity writ large.Perhaps the most important thing I can say is that I was quite satisfied with the volume when I finished it. Several of selections sufficiently moved me that I have re-read them, which I believe is a testament to the fact that the editors did a fine job of selecting the works they included, and I plan to buy complete--or at least more complete--publications of some of the excerpts in the volume. So I can recommend this book to anyone interested in Christianity generally, Christian mysticism, or mysticism generally. It's a very rewarding read.

from the lives of Christian mystics across the ages. Compared to some other anthologies in my library, this text is readable but still captures the essence of these wise souls. Only wish more of the saints were included.

Good chronological arrangement which complements McGinn's Essential Writings arrangement by stages of the journey.

Light from Light is a very well written anthology of mystical christian saints, I especially liked the numerous commentaries on our Transendent Lord.

Quick deliver, pretty good book.

As with any anthology, a discriminatory selection process requires an exclusion of some authors and works that some readers may feel should have been included. The editors of this work were painfully aware of this problem, but took into consideration the interests and opinions of their readers when revising and updating this anthology. Those who have the first edition, like myself, will notice that some authors were replaced with others (the editors explain the selection process in the Preface). The first edition included French spiritual writers Fenelon, Guyon and Marie of the Incarnation, as well as Maximus the Confessor, William Law, and Henri Le Saux, the first three omitted because of a lack of response and the last three omitted because of a general lack of recognition. Those that were added this time around include Francis and Clare of Assisi, Francis de Sales, Jeanne de Chantal, and Evelyn Underhill. Those that remained include: Origen, Gregory of Nyssa, Augustine of Hippo, Pseudo-Dionysius, Bernard of Clairvaux, Bonaventure, Meister Eckhart, Jan van Ruusbroec, Gregory Palamas, Julian of Norwich, the unknown author of The Cloud of Unknowing, Catherine of Siena, Ignatius of Loyola, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Jonathan Edwards, Therese of Lisieux, and Thomas Merton.The General Introduction is concise, clear and well-balanced. It notably rejects the perspective that sees mysticism as the essence of all religion (the "perennial philosophy" or "universal mystical religion" view) while, at the same time, affirming that a mystical element belongs to the very essence of religion, along with other elements (one is reminded of Friedrich von Hugel's masterpiece on mysticism). Christianity is recognized as distinct from other theistic and non-theistic (pagan) religions. Yet, it is noted that interaction between the various belief systems has influenced Christian theology in general and Christian mysticism in particular.This is an excellent, one-of-a-kind anthology. Each spiritual writer is given a fine introduction, followed by an extended excerpt or two from one or more of their literary masterpieces. Many of the excerpts are taken from Paulist Press' The Classics of Western Spirituality series. Each spiritual writer is given a separate Selected Bibliography, divided into Texts (Edition Used, Other Sources) and Studies. For a general introduction to other Christian mystics, see Ursula King's Christian Mystics. Bernard McGinn's The Presence of God series on Western Christian mysticism provides a more in-depth analysis. See especially his first book, The Foundations of Mysticism. McGinn considers Sidney Spencer's Mysticism in World Religions (OP) as one of the more successful overviews of mysticism in the various world religions. Less successful anthologies include Happold's Mysticism and Huxley's The Perennial Philosophy. Huxley's book assumes that there is only one true universal mystical religion that underlies all the various religions. Again, the editors of this anthology, among many others, reject this reductionistic view which has more in common with the monistic or pantheistic/panentheistic religions than the theistic ones, including the unique Trinitarian theism of Biblical Christianity.

I think many anthologies of Christian mysticism survey too many authors too briefly and the reader struggles to take much out of the book. This anthology does an excellent job of providing accurate and concise introduction to the mystics themselves along with reasonable selections of writings, 10-15 pages in most cases. The book is quite long, but the reader will come away with a good knowledge of each mystic.

Story structure books rarely elicit 'meh' reactions--readers either love them as the magic formulas for winning screenplays, or they hate them as hackneyed recipes for mediocrity. This book has generated a fair amount of the latter, particularly with its thesis that all stories are the same.I write as a member of a team. My writing partner is more creative than I am, and a better writer. I am more analytic, and better at story development. Both sides, the analytic and the creative, are essential for good storytelling, which is why we write pretty well together. With that said, this book is for me more than for my partner.There is nothing revolutionary in this book--what is says has been said before, in other places. But it lays out its thesis and argument in an engaging and accessible manner. Read this book before reading Robert McKee--what he has to say will make more sense the first time through. Read it before Blake Snyder--you'll better understand his framework and its limitations.But remember--this is a book of analysis, not creativity. If you belong to the "I just want to tell my story" school of screenwriting, you may view it as a straightjacket on your creativity. If you go down that road, keep in mind that most crappy screenplays are undisciplined attempts by wannabe writers to express some inner vision. Well, that's not what screenplay writing is all about. It's a profession; a highly-disciplined craft of developing and telling well-structured stories that are calculated to appeal to a wide audience. This book will help you learn to do that.

Learning to write well is difficult on one's own. Writers read like crazy, but what they pick up from other writers is often sketchy or just plain wrong. Story structure is not intuitive.John Yorke makes a very good case for the five-act, as opposed to three-act, structure. Most books on writing structure do break the second act into two related parts, which gives you - ta-da! - five parts. Yorke's breakdown of the purpose of these acts, all different but interrelated, makes sense.There's some very good information here, but the entire book is not cram-packed with it. The later chapters are largely skippable. Still, I gave it four stars for a reason: it's in the headline.

What a great book! John Yorke's Into the Woods is a superb exploration of the theory behind storytelling. I wouldn't call it a "how to" book exactly. It takes more of a "here's why" approach. The author is clearly familiar with the worlds of literature, motion pictures, the stage, and television. In fact, he has had a major role in shaping the television industry, especially in Great Britain. Using Hegelian dialectic (thesis-antithesis-synthesis), he helps the reader understand the archetypal structure of drama and the importance of seeing any well-told story as a change arc. His framing of "theme" as a question leads to the most helpful explanation I have yet to read on the subject. If you want to know more about how stories work to bring about transformation, how they seek to resolve arguments related to universal questions, or how they mirror the working of the human mind, you will love this book.

This book is a great introduction/refresher to the foundations of storytelling. I didn't many things that were vastly different than what I've read in other craft books, but the way in which the book is organized, as well as its explanations of concepts, are thorough, clear, and provide many examples, particularly from film.I'd say my favorite part was the dissection of the three-act structure, which is a simplified version of the five-act structure. I've always been baffled at the large chunk of the second act, and wondered why it couldn't be broken up into more pieces because surely SOMETHING has to happen with more detail, right? It does, and I feel that Yorke explains it well here.This book is great as a primer or story structure for newcomers, and a great refresher for those looking to keep their craft sharp.

Referencing a lot of the "how-to" books that most writers have read, the author, John Yorke, explores the basic structure of a good story well told. Using plenty of contemporary examples, he's able to clearly make his point(s). Terrific instructions for anyone just starting out in the writing business and a wonderful refresher for those who already earning a living at it.

I've read many of the books on writing screenplays and fiction, including most of the works that Yorke discusses here. He does a good job of finding their weaknesses, and then posits his own take on how to approach the telling of a story. Because he takes that overall view, this book did a great job of tying them all together for me. His explanation of theme set off a few 'Aha!' moments for me, so I'm thankful for that. It's a fast read that is very efficient with your time, so kudos for that too. Highly recommended!

This is the most informative and least dogmatic book on the structure of story and from that screenwriting ever. It gives you the information you need to think with all the other how to books. This is a why are stories that way book rather than a how to structure a story or screenplay. Very good

A game changer for clarity in story development. The only reason it isn't a five star, is because there isn't enough practical application examples for my liking. But excellent nonetheless.

Rather than copy the other very astute reviews, let me just tell you how to read this book. It's challenging, and it doesn't always follow the standard dictates of plot, but you may enjoy it more if you know what to expect.1) It's not a page-turning, finish-in-one-night kind of book. If you try, you'll miss out. I had to read it over several days, each session giving me a hundred things to think about.2) When you get anxious for the plot to pick up, think of it as satirical standup, and read it like you'd listen to the comics to which Beatty's compared, namely Dave Chapelle. (If you're thinking of it as a novel instead of as satire, you can lose the thread of hilarity) When you're overwhelmed by the satire, think of it as a novel and try to piece together the experiences that make up Bonbon's character. It's hard to get hold of his character at times, and trying to summarize Bonbon Me's character is a (rewarding) reading experience in and of itself.3) You may want to have google at hand so you don't miss out on the plethora (this word is on my mind after one particularly funny bit near the end), of cultural and historical references. You might know Plessy v. Ferguson and the scopes trial, but it would be hard, I think, to catch every reference, and the satire depends on them.4) Yes, it's funny, but not in the LOL way as often as 'that so true it's painful' way. Reading the reviews, I expected to be chuckling every few pages. Instead I had a wry grin every few sentences. Don't let this deter you. The verbs come at the end of sentences so often that you really have to read it at a run if you don't want to lose the thread of what's going on, but I can guarantee the thread is worth catching. In the last few pages of the book, Beatty comes as close to speaking to you plainly as the author as he does in the entire novel, and what he had to say tied the its many disparate observations together perfectly.

Who writes like this? I asked myself, having been overwhelmed with satiric jabs after about 25 densely written pages. Ishmael Reed? And then why compare Beatty only to another black writer? Was that racist? Woody Allen wrote this densely, stories full of caricatures and outrageous situations, but New-York-Jewish in subject, and then only a few pages long, not an entire novel. Surely Beatty couldn't keep it up.But by page 227 his comic inventions were still going strong. Here the protagonist converts the "long out-of-business brushless car wash" in his L.A. ghetto into a "tunnel of whiteness" for the local children, with "several race wash options:"Regular Whiteness: Benefit of the Doubt Higher Life Expectancy Lower Insurance PremiumsDeluxe Whiteness: Regular Whiteness Plus Warnings instead of Arrests from the Police Decent Seats at Concerts and Sporting Events World Revolves Around You and Your ConcernsSuper Deluxe Whiteness: Deluxe Whiteness Plus Jobs with Annual Bonuses Military Service Is for Suckers Legacy Admission to College of Your Choice Therapists That Listen Boats That You Never Use All Vices and Bad Habits Referred to as "Phases" Not Responsible for Scratches, Dents, and Items Left in the SubconsciousBy "dense," I mean that almost every sentence contains a comic explosion, a twist, something that leaves you breathless or laughing out loud. Who does that? I thought of Barry Hannah, a Southern writer now gone. I think Hannah would have admired Beatty and recognized a literary kinsman. Also, something about Beatty's writing seemed to come from African-American oratory, its ornateness maybe, like Stanley Crouch's writing about jazz, but it wasn't self-conscious. Certainly the point of view was uniquely African-American, and I'm sure as a white reader I missed some of the inside humor. But plenty hit home with me, and would with almost any other half-alert citizen of this great land.Speaking of which: this is a horrible time in our culture—with everyone's cell phones recording the underbelly of brutal racist policing, with political reactionaries running amok—to be attempting satire. It damn well better be funny. Beatty succeeds with a scenario that's not only side-splitting but right up to the minute. (I'm tempted to give more examples but will forbear) He's brilliant. (He's also profane and vulgar, as how could he not be? The n-word alone is used probably 1000 times)Chris Rock can be devastatingly funny sometimes. Key & Peele can be outrageously funny sometimes. Making a barb leap off the written page is harder. As one critic said: Beatty can reduce a sacred cow to hamburger with one sentence.
