In plain English how the city works. Fun and informative

I am a resident, not a tourist. The book has information that most locals do not know. Let me give an example. ATMs in Latin America can be "touchy", often refusing to dispense money. You quickly learn which ones have mean streaks and which do their jobs. Two months ago I returned to Antigua from a trip to Chiapas. To my surprise, I could not use my debit card in my two favorite reliable spots in Antigua. About this time, I bought Michael Sherer's book. It details a simple and effective way of overcoming this problem without resorting on Western Union, PayPal, cash from friends/relatives, etc. The value of this hack was worth to me at least 25 times more than the cost of the book. Great inside information on culture, restaurants, things to do, places to go, etc. Any complaints? Yes. The publisher needs to let Sherer add an index to assist in locating information.

I am a long-time resident of Antigua, which is, by the way, one of the world's great towns. I know our pueblo well, or thought I did until I read Michael's book. I was impressed with his research, accuracy, and awareness of so much here that I didn't know about. Useful, interesting and well-written in a lively writing style that had me finish the book in one reading. If you are coming to visit, this book will definitely make your trip more enriching. If you live here, read it and you will probably be surprised by how you don't know. And if you live here and have guests visit, stick this book in their hands and you have done all you need to do to insure they have a great visit.

With this book Michael proves that he knows Antigua better than anybody else. I can confirm that whatever is written in the book is as far as I know it, exactly how Michel is describing it.This book is a " Must read " for everybody who wants to stay longer than just a few Days. Love Dee Henderson. This the collection of all of the O'MALLEY series. As in any series you may have a favorite and I do as well but it doesn't matter because everyone of these books are incredible. Each book could be read as a stand alone but why stop at just one. You will be craving the next story before you finish the one you are reading. From the prequel to the finale you won't want to put it down. I love the concept of a family raised in an orphanage and became their own family. Later changing their name so that they could always be united if not by blood then by choice. Good clean Christian stories with great characters, mystery and love. Definitely a must read.

Dee Henderson writes well. The best part is her research of the professions, lifestyles, and situations of her characters. A person can learn a lot about what it really means to be a policeman, fire fighter, EMT, etc.... How it feels and what the stresses are. I work with people in these fields and Henderson describes it very well! I appreciate the complex interactions and developing relationships between the characters. There are no explicit sex scenes. She skillfully weaves auras of violence and impending disaster without the stomach turning graphic descriptions. There is also the constant reminder that God and faith are important issues and can be deal breakers in a relationship. On the other hand, there is no "Bible thumping" to make the reader feel like certain views about religion are being slipped into the mix.

Absolutely LOVE The O'Malley Collection!! I have read all of Dee Henderson's books and The O'Malleys hold a very special place in my heart. Dee Henderson has presented a wonderful family that is always there for each other, even though each member of the family were brought together in an unconventional means. The depth of each story line as well as each character truly holds your interest. If there were 10 stars, I would give this a 10 in a second!!

I am so glad I got this whole set together. I would finish one book and just keep on going to the next one! Henderson writes the kind of suspense I enjoy reading - enough pauses to relax, good romance interwoven with the nail-biting scenes, etc. Her characters became friends, and I hated to come to the end of the whole series. Now she needs to write about all their kids :-) I highly recommend this series!

This is the third time for me reading all the O'Malley books. It has been long enough that I couldn't remember exactly what happened --so that was really fun. I'm sad to have them finished. I've bought the whole set of these books for my 30-something niece and for my 96-year-old mother in law (who both loved them). Interesting characters, wonderful relationships, plots that keep you wondering; these books have it all. You can buy each book separately but I loved getting the digital version of all of them together.

I loved these books and wished they would continue. I loved the characters, the trials they had, the amazing ways God was brought into the stories as well. I also loved the fact the other characters that we read previously were included in the new stories. I felt a part of the family and the men were strong and likable.

Great series and I love how her other books in other series tie in to the characters you fall in love with in this series. I donated the series to a church library years ago and rebought them on my kindle recently. As a former EMT I loved Steven's story as his feelings of burnout are relatable. I love how close knit the characters are and that the story continues to build through out the series. Dee is one of my favorite authors.

This collection of the stories of each of the O'Malleys is wonderful. It has great characters, suspense, and romance with the message of the Gospel sprinkled throughout. These are entertaining and nourishing books.

As a physician and Stanford researcher (initially in artificial intelligence and currently in cognitive neuroscience), I have been interested in consciousness research for 50 years. How does the brain create consciousness? And, if this is "simply" a story of billions of spiking neurons talking to one another, can it be done in silicon? (If so, this may occasion a profound turning point in human history.)I have followed Professor Stan Dehaene's prestigious journal publications for a decade as he has amassed a wealth of evidence supporting the view that consciousness is 1) experimentally accessible, 2) has reliable neural correlates (signatures), and 3) is functionally important . Dehaene (a professor at the College de France in Paris and director of the INSERM Cognitive Neuroimaging Unit) is one of the world's leading scholars of consciousness. Fortunately for us, his literary agent, John Brockman (of "Edge" fame) persuaded him to write this popular work.That Dehaene writes this well in English makes me wonder how spectacularly he must write in his native French. We are not only transported to the cutting edge of research on consciousness, but the voyage is a thrill. As expected, Dehaene is thoroughly steeped in the history of consciousness from Plato, through Descartes, Hume, and the Continental philosophers. His writing is also filled with references to French art, literature, and humanism (like serotonin molecules, that culture seems to have diffused from the Louvre down the Boulevard Saint-Michel and become bound in this book.)Right from the start (see the beautiful, free Introduction on Amazon) he reminds us that it all began in the caves at Lascaux with the depiction of a dreamer's soul wafting about like a sparrow. Deftly weaving ancient Egyptian mythology with the Upanishads, he transitions to Descartes and his alleged "Error." Rightfully defending his countryman, Dehaene takes contemporary pop-neurosci to task. Descartes was no dualist (body + immaterial soul) blinded by religion. Rather, he was genuinely grappling with the central problem of this book and the field. How does conscious perception, reflection, and deliberation emanate from a machine?In seven chapters, Dehaene carefully steps us through all the evidence (from his large Paris group and the world's other top labs) of the brain's signatures of consciousness.How can one even study consciousness in the lab? (Chapter 1) The key innovation was the discovery and exploitation of "minimal contrast" phenomena. When presented just too faintly, too rapidly. or when masked they are completely invisible. But, increase the intensity, duration, or remove the mask and there they are, plain as day. Non-conscious and pre-conscious processing is ubiquitous, functional, and essential. He reviews fascinating experiments that reveal the pervasive and essential role of non-conscious processing in language, vision, hearing, and action. Consciousness is the tip of the iceberg.Perhaps consciousness is epiphenomenal (a non-functional add-on, like the roar of a jet plane). In Chapter 3 he dismisses that old, profoundly counter-intuitive proposition. His argument here is reminiscent of Kahneman's Thinking Fast and Slow. Fast (nonconscious) thought is fine for practiced, routine, reflexive speech and action. But thinking and action marked by careful deliberation and planning requires consciousness: the ability to maintain a percept in working memory and mull it over.Chapter 4 displays the core findings of the experimental work: the neural signatures of consciousness. These are what Nobelist Francis Crick and collaborator Christof Koch called the neural correlates of consciousness. (See Koch's excellent work "The Quest for Consciousness") Even invisible, unseen (subliminal) stimuli excite chains of neural firing but only in primary sensory areas. However, when a stimulus crosses the threshold into consciousness, the neural firing is strongly amplified in intensity and distribution as many brain regions ignite and communicate especially prefrontal, parietal, and anterior temporal areas.In Chapter 5 he describes a tentative theory that accounts for the experimental findings: the global neuronal workspace theory. I'm old enough to recall the origin of this theory as the blackboard model from 1970s AI research sponsored by DARPA that led to the then famous Hearsay-II speech understanding system from CMU. In an interesting quirk of history, this excellent work was dragged into oblivion by the AI Winter of the 1980s. But, the theory itself became resurrected as a theory of consciousness by psychologist Bernard Baars. (See Baars' 1988 A Cognitive Theory of Consciousness). With the 1990 advent of fMRI, this theory became ripe for experimental verification. Entrez Professeur Dehaene. Not only can he explain the lab details from Chapter 4, he has also built a computer simulation of a spiking neural network that exhibits the same behavior.As you may know, Europe has just embarked on a ten year 1.5 billion dollar project to simulate the human brain. While this project may seem to be irrationally ambitious, I am comforted in knowing that Dehaene is one of the scientists at the helm.Chapter 6 deals with the crucial topic of coma and vegetative states. It opens poignantly with the case of Jean-Dominique Bauby, the Editor of Elle, who had a brain stem stroke, and though entirely paralyzed (save for one eye), wrote an entire book "The Diving Bell and The Butterfly" by blinking that eye. EEG, MEG, and fMRI signatures of consciousness may in the future help us to decide which coma patients are conscious and which are not.He closes in Chapter 7 with the future: tests for animal consciousness and machine consciousness. While machine consciousness may someday be possible, it will not happen soon. Nonetheless, this work paves the way to it by showing the functional properties of the only system that we know is conscious: ourselves.Although I've read widely on this topic (and cover AI and Stanford neuroscience on my website: bobblum) , there was much here that was new to me. This is an outstanding work on the basis of both scientific and literary merit.

I've read many books on consciousness but none that so satisfyingly summarizes the recent experimental research. Though his native language is French, Dehaene writes brilliant and lucid English--no wonder he cites Nabokov so often! The topic is a tough one for a nonprofessional like myself, but the author patiently takes us through the various ways consciousness can be detected and how, through various instruments, we can see the signs of its operation. There's an unusual warmth to the writing as well--Dehaene must be a remarkable individual. All in all, this is a splendid example of clear exposition. My only disappointment came at the very end where I thought Dehaene rushed his argument a bit and exaggerated the prospects of our being able to model human consciousness in machines. I thought he needed to consider David Chalmers' idea of "qualia" more carefully. I also wish he'd have paid just a little attention to Henri Bergson's too-easily dismissed theories and John Searle's more recent work on perception. But perhaps such matters will be covered in the next book, which I eagerly await.

An extremely interesting book for those interested in the field.One Caveat, though. I've learned about the subject from various neuro-researchers: Michael Gazzaniga, Giulio Tononi, Susan Greenfield, Mark Solms, Zvi Rappaport, or Antonio Damasio. All of them are very knowledgeable, and I've learned a lot from all of them as well as from Stanislass Dehaene's book I'm reviewing here. The amazing thing is that even though many of them draw a clear picture, there is very little overlap.This makes each of the sources even more interesting, but it also shows that the topic has not yet been matured. Dehaene's book concentrates on the pattern of information processes, and about what happens at the stage where some of the information (after being well digested by the brain) comes to our conscious awareness. The problem is that at this stage, there is so much activity, that it is very hard to pinpoint what is the result of things becoming to our conscious awareness, or what just accompanies it.

It is wonderful to find a book that has taken consciousness from a philosophical subject, approachable mostly by way of metaphor, to the scientific, experimental level.Mr. Dehaene begins, as is often necessary in science, by defining the term consciousness in a clear and unambiguous manner that delineates it from other related and often conflated terms such as awareness and attention.But the majority of this book concerns data taken from nuts-and-bolts experiments in the lab, many using brain-imaging equipment, that give information about actual brain processes that occur during consciousness and how they differ from those of unconscious processing. And sometimes startling insights about the evolution of consciousness and the reasons it may have developed.Four "signatures" of consciousness were identified from this experimental data, and using these signatures, a theory of consciousness was developed and also a practical method for determining the actual state of animals, babies, or patients who have suffered brain trauma or paralysis and are not able to communicate directly with people.This is cutting-edge, ground-floor science, and I am thankful to live in an era where I can access this knowledge. I've used Solomon's methods for several decades and the closer I stick to his suggestions the closer I come to having a world class garden. I had to buy the new edition of "Growing Vegetables.." because, once again, I'd given away my dog-eared copy to a new gardener!

This was not my first time reading a book by Steve Solomon, I have tried quite a few of things that he recommends over the years in my vegetable garden. The best part of this book is the new COF ( complete organic fertilizer) recipe. I had good success with the past recipe in the last edition but this was a way better year for me with the new version! My cucumber plants and zucchini all have done better than ever now that I found out they needed zinc. That is just one example of the improvements I have experienced from my first year of trying to better improve the balance of minerals in my garden. The soil in my newer garden plot barely grew decent weeds when I started growing in it. I know some people don’t really enjoy his writing style but I do, growing up I never got to enjoy having a grandpa around to learn from. His style is what I imagine could have been if I had ever had a garden savvy grandpa, a little rambling but very useful advice.

How do you have a picture of artichokes on the outside of your book but no mention of them inside?That's a serious question, though a very minor quibble. Overall, a great book I'll refer to again and again.

I just moved to the Oregon Coast Range and need some local advice for the garden. This book has it in spades. Very specific instructions and information, and like any old-timer, the author has plenty of strong opinions and personal anectodes on every subject from the "proper" tools, to seed suppliers. I'm excited to put much of this into practice, and as they say, the proof will be in the pudding. I'll update the review next fall.

I take my 95 year old client to Good Samaritan for physical therapy and we often walk around in their beautiful vegetable garden admiring everything. I finally asked the gardener how he grew such lovely produce and he recommended this book. I can't wait for all this snow to go away so I can create this garden for myself!

This book is VERY informative. It's also VERY discouraging. I'm a lifelong Pacific Northwesterner who decided this year to grow some tomatoes. If I hadn't already been neck-deep in the project by the time I bought this book -- and if I hadn't seen plenty of neighbors succeed, many of them without bothering to pay any attention at all to the science of any of it -- I'd have read this and decided the deck was hopelessly stacked against the project.Yes, I know we have some real challenges here in this area. But if you're looking for reasons to give up before you even start, this book will provide them aplenty. On the other hand, if you're a reasonably experienced gardener looking for explanations -- and maybe solutions -- for problems you've had, this book will almost certainly be your best possible resource. And, for newbies who aren't easily discouraged, I can see where it might keep you from making some errors at the outset.Otherwise, it'll definitely make you view the produce department at your local supermarket as a bargain. So I guess that's good, right?

I really enjoyed reading this book I didn't want to put it down it was never boring and I was amazed how Mr. Bumpy Johnson rose from an unknown street thug to the renowned Godfather of Harlem. There are so many that don't believe who Bumpy Johnson was, but I know family members (an great aunt who is still alive at 98) that migrated to Harlem from Georgia in the 30's and 40's that knew him in passing and what he was, they whispered about him with awe. Frank Lucas story of his life is a fairy tale even the detective that arrested him said he was a liar and a snitch.Bumpy Johnson was no snitch and nobody's flunky or henchman. Bumpy Johnson was who he was......a Gangster, he made no excuses for that but he did it his way. I wished he could have used that same talent and energy for a more respectable profession but he used what was given to him at the time, and of all the old gangsters of his time he was the last man standing. I would highly recommend this book if you are interested in the Real black gangsters of Harlem. Frank Lucas ain't it.

I purchased the Kindel edition of this book. Best 5.99 I ever spent. I really wish their was a tip jar because I owe someone some more money.More than just a story about the notorious Harlem Godfather Bumpy Johnson, this book puts you square in the middle of the action during the Harlem Renaissance. Mayme Johnson was only married to Bumpy Johnson for three years, but she lives several lifetimes in those three years. She knew or knew of EVERYBODY. From Sarah Vaughn to Billi Holiday to all the hipster party goers, hustlers and cops.Reading this book gives me more than an inside look at Bumpy Johnson's life, it gives me an inside look into life in Harlem.Harlem, at that time, had to be the sexiest place the world and in this book, the story of Harlem is told with just as much care as the story about Bumpy Johnson.

This book tells the story of the original "American Gangster" Ellsworth 'Bumpy' Johnson as told by his wife Ms. Mayme Johnson. As with any bio book about a infamous person written by a loving spouse you will see a certain amount of bias, especially when it comes to violence but Ms. Mayme did a fine job of telling about the good and the bad of the legendary Bumpy Johnson.After first seeing Bumpy's story in the movies 'Hoodlum', 'The Cotton Club' and a snippet in 'American Gangster', I wanted to read more about this man. In my opinion none of the movies did him justice but Hoodlum at least had some of the facts straight. This book gives the most complete story we will ever have. Of course Ms. Mayme was not there to witness acts of violence and must rely on what what was told to her by Bumpy or his associates regarding these acts. I enjoyed learning about his family history but especially liked the description of the co-author's encounter with the Queen, Madame St. Claire. It was good to read another example of the exaerations told by fellow legendary gangster, Frank Lucas. I mean isn't he enough of a bad-a** without having to make up things? Another excellent book on this topic is 'Sargent Smack', the story of the real Ike Attkinson who also exposes the many delusions in the mind of Frank Lucas.I read the Kindle edition of this book after waiting almost six months for the price to go down and its well worth the current price. I had been interested in reading about "Bumpy" from the days of "Shaft" and "Hoodlum". Just who was this guy that instilled fear into the hearts of "BIG" "BAD" Mafia hoods like Dutch Shultz and demanded respect from Luciano? The way other gangster books and movies told the story: The game began and ended with Italians. Everybody knows Capone, Luciano, Gambino etc.... But who was Bumpy Johnson? Mayme told the story the way it was!! And introduced many more characters of the underworld that no one had ever heard about.....Unless you were there in the game!And this is what I liked about the book: IT WAS FRESH!!! New information that I had not read before in The Godfather, Goodfellas and other Mob books (And God knows i've read 'em all!).I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Bumpy and the Harlem that has been misrepresented in the media. My only complaint is that it wasn't long enough. Mayme made me feel like I knew her and I could listen to her forever!!!! Thank you for telling the real story!

Where do I begin?! Let me just say this book is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I wanted to read or learn about the life and times of a gangsta from a "black point of view" back in the days. This book is just that. Even though it is supposed to have been told from his wife's point of view, it is still as gritty as can possibly be. The book was a little of 200 pages and I think I finished it in 2-3 days during the work week. The book had a few grammar errors but Im a trucker not an editor. That was not an issue for me. lol The STORY, whether true or not, was great!!! What else do you want when you open a book if not a GOOD STORY?????? The main character and the story is in Harlem NY. I suspect people from New York would enjoy it even more.

Honestly, I could not put the book down! With all the films such as Hoodlum and American Gangster, which gave the Hollywood version of a notable man. I will say this: It does make you reexamine the Frank Lucas claims that he was "Bumpy's right-hand man", since the widow of Bumpy dismisses those claims and brings to light other personalities that displayed Frank Lucas' skill to spin a story using someone else's life story. Miss Mayme strips away all of the nonsense history has placed on her husband, and gives us an honest actually being there story. If you like gangster stories, add this to your shelf- this isn't fake fiction, this is a real story, a real person's real life.
